Blues Trade For Tkachuk

By Brad Lee
From the Been There, Done That category, the Blues on Tuesday traded for Keith Tkahcuk. Well the rights to Keith Tkachuk since he's a free agent. They gave up a pick the Blues would have gotten if the Thrashers had re-signed him, which obviously wasn't going to happen. So in essence, the Thrashers trade the rights to a player they won't re-sign for a pick they weren't going to give up anyway. That's one way to get around the re-signing Doug Weight backlash from a year ago.
Here's the story. I guess what it really means is the Blues have every intention of bringing back Big Walt. Is that really a good idea? Discuss in the comments. Â

I guess this isn’t too surprising, but if Tkachuk wants a legitimate kick at the can before he retires, does he think he’s going to get that chance with the Blues?
I think the team is going the right direction, but I’d be more optimistic than most to think that the Cup would be getting a ride down Market anytime in the next 4 years.
So does Tkachuk think more optimistically than me, or is he going to be trade bait (again) at the deadline sometime in the next 2 years?

home boys network. you can sell the team. you can change presidents,
you still draft some 2nd-3rd (rools eyes) rounder with your 18th overall pick
you still overpay to get back the salary you so desperately shed the last two seasons (don’t forget weight!)
you pay people not to play (as drake is a zero sum game at best!)
how in the world do the blues intend to sell this team this offseason?

o_O sell? it’s the Penguins and Predators that are looking for new owners, not the Blues. Checkets and Co. have us for 4 more years if I remember correctly.
And I think it was a good move getting Walt(’s rights) back. He played well under Murray, at center even.
the plan is probably this: he’s restricted, so if anyone signs him, we get compensation. if no one signs him, we got a 1st line center again.
it’d be best not to sign him (considering he’s still available) until August.

Over rated underachiever. Welcome back Walt. (Why is this guy nicknamed afeter someone who played for the Rangers years ago and to whom he is not even related?)

John Davidson said on Miklasz’s radio show yesterday that Atlanta’s GM approached the Blues at the draft saying the Thrashers like Tkachuk and that he was the reason they made the playoffs (he didn’t say if Tkachuk was the reason they were so horrible in the playoffs). Atlanta was thinking about re-signing him, but not at the cost of a No. 1 pick. So the Blues offered to make the deal be a fourth rounder if Atlanta signs him before November.
As I wrote in the post, I think this is a way to negate some of the backlash from a Weight-like signing. And as it was mentioned in the Post-Dispatch story, if they do re-sign Walt before July 1, then they will know what the team budget is before approaching any other free agents.
As far as having Tkachuk back with the team, in the past I’ve been against bringing back former Blues players. I’d welcome Tkachuk at the right price with the caveat that he’s not the No. 1 center, who would be signing sometime next week.

I believe Walter is the name of his dad and the Ranger’s player who he’s not related to.

Good move by the Blues. They needed a couple of scorers to make this team competitive and Walt comes cheaper than some of the big free agents out there. (Gomez, Drury, etc.) Two years should be enough time for some of the youngsters to grow in Peoria and be ready to step in when Tkachuk is gone. Murray loves this guy and he played very well after Murray came and put him at center.
He is DEFINATELY a no-show in the playoffs, but it will be hard for the Blues to make it that far, so no big deal. Tkachuk is a friggin bull out there on the ice and he is fun to watch and will put some butts in the seats and help this team win. It would be great if the Blues could find another reasonably priced winger (Zubrus?) winger to add some offense, but this is a step in the right direction.
