McDonald Out Indefinitely - Fractured Leg

By Sean Gallagher

McD, obviously BEFORE the injury.During the post-game press conference this evening, head coach Andy Murray confirmed that the Blues' bad luck this year will, indeed continue. Team scoring leader Andy McDonald is out indefinitely with a fractured leg.

More information will follow after McDonald has a formal examination with team doctors in the coming days.

McDonald, who is in the last year of his current contract, was leading the Blues with 18 points (6g, 12a). He was getting over 20 minutes of icetime per game.

In related news, Murray also announced that it was likely that Paul Kariya would return to the lineup for Friday's game against Anaheim.

In related news, a comet is on its way to Earth and is expected to hit the Scottrade Center during the second period Friday night when Anaheim is in town. Only Blues players are expected to hurt by the blast.

McDonald has been the most important player for the Blues so far this season. Brad Boyes is being secured in bubble wrap even as we speak.

This completely sucks. It’s beyond sucking.

Sucks harder than an Oreck.

He was one of the guys on the team that could actually make things happen on the ice. This team just got a lot less fun to watch. Wonder if the injury will somehow affect his value on the free agent market, maybe in the long run it could help the blues afford to sign him for a few years??
Even the brightside of this doesnt require sunglasses.

The injury bug also means that Murray’s leash just got a lot longer. At least the focus will be more on developing the talent than on “making a playoff run” that would likely be short-lived anyway. Two of the hardest working players on the ice are now on the shelf. If the team can learn something from their absence, the team that they come back to will be substantially better than the one they left. Also, their return will be quite the emotional lift. I hope its sooner rather than later.

I agree whole heartedly Tim. Unless one of the netminders suddenly realized a talent level they haven;t shown yet, our play off run would be short. Otherwise, if we had super goaltending, we’d actually be a great dark horse in the race.

This certainly does suck. I think they were planning on signing Andy anyway. He’s been a great player since the lockout. I think the Ducks often wish they didn;t trade him last year.

I do think it might have a certain effect on the cost of his future contract. Two seasons with injuries, a smaller guy, at the same time, the last few off seasons have proven that like chumming the water for sharks the Gms get out of hand rather quickly and stupodly during the free agent season.

Honestly, I think they should bring a kid from juniors and give them a nine game go. It’d help them in their future development. Smooth the transition, as well as see where they are at. At least it’d be interesting peek into the future for the fans.

I know that Kariya is our big name player, and I’ll be glad to see him back in the lineup. To be honest though, I’ve got more anticipation for Oshie’s return, and I don’t honestly know why. I mean it’s not like he’s been a point-per-game player. I just like to watch him play. Maybe it’s seeing how his success is almost entirely related to how hard he works every game. Whatever it is, I’m looking forward to seeing him back on the ice for us.

On the other hand, I too like the idea of seeing some more prospects come up. If only to give them a taste of what it’s like in the NHL. Give them a little nibble to whet their appetites. Let them get a feel for what it takes to be an NHL quality player. Man, it’s nice to have prospects to be excited about.

“It’s MegaMaid, sir! She’s gone from suck to blow!”

Not sure if this sucks or blows. Perhaps both. Not cool either way.

by Donut King on Nov 17, 2008 6:55 AM CST reply actions

I’m not sure what the rules are on giving junior prospects a nine-game tryout in mid-season… but if the rules allow it, I’d like to see Brett Sonne brought up from Calgary (WHL) and given a look.

The kid can play; he’s tied for the scoring lead in the WHL with 36 points as of yesterday, and he’s defensively responsible as well. He’s looked pretty good in both of the Development Camps where I’ve seen him.

Based on last night, I think they need to keep Regier up as well.

Donut King, why couldn’t that have been McDonald’s stunt double?

by Chris Gift on Nov 17, 2008 9:55 AM CST reply actions

Once a guy has been returned to juniors, it’s hands-off until next year. Whether that’s after 9 games, after 1 game or after zero games.

Returned to juniors is returned for the year.

i listened to jd on kmox this morning and he said they are waiting on an mri because when macdonald hit the boards, his toe caught and bent toward his shin, apparently quite awkwardly. adding tendon/ligament injuries on top of a fracture would be a nightmare scenario. at least fractures are more definite… sprains and tears frighten me much more because you never know how long they will linger (not that a fracture is ever a good thing). either way, speedy recovery to #10.

if someone could take Deadspin’s “Nightmare Ant” and photoshop some bandages, gauze, and a crutch, that’d match my mental image of the “injury bug”

by Tim on Nov 17, 2008 12:30 PM CST reply actions

what is really bad, is this andy trade was one move the team did with this year in mind and now it is a failure due to injury, and im sure andy’s walk year was not the time he wanted to be in the sauna all season.

i suspect the blues did not insue their players as a cost savings (as they prob had enough sense to not expect a playoff performance)

if they DID insure though, andy would have bene the only one, and the blues payback won’t cover signing a good player.

other great non bug (but salaries and cap news) the blues have no starter next year. manny is done and while mason is signed, i’d hope he isnt penciled in as a starter!

team is going to look a lot different on o next year. with the vets gone to free agency and the youth uninjured and they blues probably have to sign something.

d prob not much change. ej will be back and that is about it

Further proof the Blues are cursed. First we lose Johnson, Oshie, and Kariya. Now McDonald? Are you kidding me?

by david on Nov 17, 2008 2:40 PM CST reply actions

If Manny is not in the picture next year, then i wonder how Ben Bishop would fit in. Remember how Pitt brought Marc-Andre Fleury up really fast? He struggled for a few years, but now plays with a great deal of confidence, and the team in front of him has faith in him too. The rebuilding process is supposed to start with the net and work forward anyway.

Damned circus.

I hope Metallica doesn’t screw up the floor with its pyrotechnics tonight; we need good ice for Friday’s game.

by Milo on Nov 17, 2008 5:32 PM CST reply actions

at this point bad ice might be our great equalizer.

So just having someone at your camp counts as being called up? If that’s the case…it’s kind of shitty. I see camp as being a job interview. It’s not like the person was hired and then fired and sent packing back to juniors…they just never got the job in the first place.

by Dan on Nov 17, 2008 6:08 PM CST reply actions

Man, this season is goin down hill fast. It seems like everything changed when Backes’ stick broke in the Detroit game. Hockeyslum ends up winning that game. Next game Manny slips on Palin’s carpet, and so on and so forth. All I have to say is Fuck Detroit…..Fuck em in the ear hole with a splintered off pencil.

Trauma, you’re almost correct. I have a feeling tkachoke will be back, god I hope at a huge discount as he owes this franchise and their fans loads of money. He’s one of the top players all time in money earned. And he’s never won a Cup and he’s never cracked a 100 points hmmph.

McKee’s contract expires after this season. So that’s an opening.

that’s a shame about the junior thing. You can send them down at anytime during the season but not call them up. I guess Eller or one of the Euros would be our best bet in that department.

Maybe somehow this team can band together and come out with something.

At the begining of the season I said this team will make the play offs IF, there are no more serious injuries. At the begining of the season we had three scoring lines and now it’s starting to look like last year’s team more and more.

That said I like what I’m ssaw from Regeir. He looks like he can handle the puck a bit. He’s got size maybe he’s one of those late bloomers.

I’d like to Sonne also. Though I’m always weary of players from the WHL. Too much of an emphasis on fighting and dirty play in that league. You’ll know you’re getting a tough player from that league you just don’t know how strong their proclovity for taking stupid penalties might be. But from what I’ve seen of Sonne I like him.

We’re stocked to the gills with talent. Some choices need to be made.

And in shocking news Brewer’s strung some good games together as of late. Is this one of those four game teaser sessions? We know he’s not power play material but he certainly seems to be working hard. I still wish he could make quicker decisions, get shots on net more frequently and drop the shoulder behind the net every once in a while. At least he’s looking more like a leader of late, unlike the bloated and overpaid Tkachuk.

by Chris D. on Nov 17, 2008 6:43 PM CST reply actions

I’m not sure if you all saw this yet, but NHL network is reporting and I’m assuming its from the same press release the Blues have on their site that it will be up to 8 weeks, but he will not need surgery.

Still fucking blows.

by Dave S on Nov 17, 2008 7:19 PM CST reply actions

McKee has one more year after this on his four-year contract.

By the way, Regier was sent down to Peoria, but the way it’s being reported, it’s somewhat expected that he’ll be called up for Friday’s game. Nothing like saving a few grand when the Blues don’t play for four days.

Off-topic useless fun fact:

In 2002 Former Rangers center Walt Tkachuk owned a golf course in Ontario where you rented llamas to carry your bags. Unsure of whether he still does.
