Oilers At Blues Open Thread

By Brad Lee
For the first time we can remember since the lockout, the Blues have not waived the Center Ice blackout for a non-locally televised game. So no local TV. No Center Ice for today's matinee against the Edmonton Oilers. Maybe they think the team will play so poorly, they don't want anyone outside the building to see. This is just the first of only five games not scheduled to be televised in St. Louis. The second...is tomorrow in Atlanta.
Friendly commenters, anyone watching on a good streaming video Web site, please kindly drop the link for everyone. No live blog today. Probably no live blog tomorrow. Fill the comments with your comments, Christmas Cookie recipes and letters to Santa. And we'll have another wrap-up thread at some point.

And I love Boyes.

I’m trying to watch the atdhe.net feed and type at the same time… just saw Roloson rob Boyes. Nice pass by Big Wallet…

Perron’s number is 57.

As for a nickname for Perron, I prefer “Frenchy,” but that’s kind of a slur… Ketchup works. Or maybe we could call him The Nature Boy, since he’s been doing the “Whooooooo!!!” cheer from the bench in prqactice, according to Good Ol’ JR…

notes from section 102 part 4.
yuck.
a) brewer can kiss the devil’s procreational wand for all i care. he is brutal. for every good defensive play he makes (which is lesss than mckee makes) he makes zero good offensive plays and 3 bad plays in all zones. fuck him and his 4 plus million dolar contract. im done with him. sadly the blues are not.
b) for the razzing i gave peron last section 102 update, he was easily. EASILY the blues best player. he used his mates, palyed the occasionally defense, and made the occasionaly good solo move.
c) drA-cola i’m liking. not that he was great or won us the game, but he IS what we need. cola was behind the oilers net at least 3 times, something a blues defenseman probaly hasnt done since his number-mate duchense.
d) steen. he got mnutes. he got improtant minutes. i have nothing to say about him either way. perhaps a bad thing.
c) legacy. this is his walk year and he does THAT? yow. yea the blues sucked since the half way mark of the first period, but 20 shots equals 107 goals? not enough goalie. mckee, jackman, polish, and draCOLA play about as good as they can. royswitka was so-so, and brewer was the monkey ejaculation we have all come to know and love, if you can’t save over 85% of the shots your as done as the bird on thanksgiving.
d) peron was still as good as it gets.
e) isnt this the ref who lives next to sean?

Can we keep the new stat, Perron Caused Offside. I understand he’s got some skill with the stick. But the dude fakes everyone out, including his teamates, and then either draws them offside by his last second slicing and dicing or throws a no look pass that no one expects.
I understand he’s young, and i understand that he’s gotta learn but fuck. He played pretty good today, he was a little lazy on the back-check but a guy with that skill can turn into something special. I hope that in 2 or 3 years this guy is the 2nd coming of jesus… and that (as he is still the 2nd coming of jesus) he resigns with the Blues.
Woywitka and Polak even seeing PP time = fail
Boyes can shoot and he can score, one thing he can’t do is pass worth a shit. He also takes lazy ass holding penalites. It seems that in close games he decides to stop moving his feet and start holding on to slow down the guy he’s chasing after.

Nope… no feed from Atlanta on Center Ice because SportSouth is cheap and/or sucks. Take your pick. The Thrashers have about 12 non-televised games in the Atlanta area for people w/o CI or tickets. It sucks – this is one of the most apathetic markets to live in EVER. Outside of Philips no one knows what’s going on. The Thrashers could win the Cup and it wouldn’t crack the front page.
Since I live in this hockey black hole, I’ll be able to see the Blues and Walt’s 1000th point in person. Here’s what you’ll be missing: a goal from the Thrash 2nd line which is better than our first, a complete and total Thrashers defensive fuck-up (probably from Schneider, who needs to RETIRE) and about 5 Blues goals on the Thrash’s AHL goalie.
We just have to storm the net and shoot high stick side, and we’re fine. Pavs is awful at blocking anything above his shoulders. He’s a good goalie and I like him way better than our overrated #1, but he shouldn’t be a problem for the Blues.

I’m not ready to freak out just yet, fellas. We just got the new guys & no doubt they’ll need some time to adjust and fit in here. They don’t look out of place on this team to me, though. I actually thought some of the guys that’ve been here were looking to have some chemistry problems out there today. “But we’ve just dropped 2 since the new guys were picked up!” Not that big of deal to me, for reasons already stated, and I think we got a little spoiled because the team of checking lines or “Riverman,” if you will, overachieved for us for a lil’ bit there. All these boys came up and were hungry, not to mention teams probably underestimated us… Not anymore, they’re ready for us. But when we get the injuries back, it’s a whole scoring line, back to three scoring & one checking line, and this time we’ll have Cola to run a PowerPlay (he’ll get there, but I feel AM doesn’t want him to get a big head by making him the man right away). Even the biggest haters on Steen in Tor said he was one the best defensive forwards in the league, and he has a hockey sense that you can always see out there, just doesn’t always have the finish. Well, even if he never develops into the stud everyone thought he’d be when he was drafted, even if he ends up being our 3rd liner, having one of the best pk/defensive o-men in the league with great sense and set-up ability, racking up 45+ points a year is part of maybe the best third line in my Blues memory. When we get healthy, if we could stay that way, I like our chances at a push. With two good goaltenders (I feel that Manny will again be Manny), with Polak helping Brew & Cola helping Fragile-Jay, and with 3 (that’s right I said 3!) scoring lines, I like this team more than another Note squad I can think of. But what’s more exciting to me is next year. If we’re out of the race in Feb, we could possibly deal said Jay at the deadline to a team that’s in it with injuries on D, and then we’ve got that money this summer on top of possibly Tkachuk’s (although I’d take him @ 1.5 on our 3rd) plus Dave said this would be a good summer to hit the market. I’m not expecting Hossa, but McD back & some well spent $ and next year could be a real, real fun time to be a puckhead in St. Louis. Although, I do think I’d like Manny back b/c I don’t want Bishop to be rushed and the fans love Legacy- he’s a great St. Louis kind of guy, he called us remember and he’s relatively cheap. I just still love what’s happening with this organ-i-zation, so I’ll just watch and cheer, for now. So WWWOOOOOO, and Let’s Go Blues!
Oh and FUCK DETROIT!

@ Gift: Nice thoughts on Kariya in today’s Game Time. Well reasoned and 100% true. Unfortunately his “stop and set up the pretty goal” has infected the entire team. (See Boyes choking away two open nets today because he did not one-time the puck). Big fish in a small pond, so everyone kisses Kariya’s overpaid ass. Nice to see you burst the blue curtain and write the truth.
@ all:
Other observations from the top of the Kiel Center (That’s right, screw the revolving corporate sponsor):
Steen has a wicked backhand. I’m sure someone on the team will tell him to stop moving around so much and to stop throwing the puck on goal hoping for a favorable rebound or grinder goal. After all, Kariya (and now an infected Boyes) do not play it that way and prefer to settle the puck near the blue line or at the edge of the blue ice and look for the picture-perfect goal. That all-out exciting style of play is not the way it is done here, so Steen’s going to have to conform to mediocrity. After all, today should have tought him that dump and chase is the way to go.
After the last few performances (especially after today’s effort) it is IMPOSSIBLE to defend Brewer any longer. His stupidity was instrumental in most if not all of the Oiler goals. I know the #1 defensive pairing is faced against the best lines, but today was asinine. Prior to the last few games I was willing to see Brewer as a stay-at-home type of defenseman, but when he actively costs goals by stupid choices and a lack of effort, I can no longer defend him against the onslaught of negativity from the group of guys one section over. I am throwing in the towel. It is tell-tale that the in-game trivia dealie today asked which current Blues defenseman was traded to the Blues on whatever date, 2005 and the choices were Brewer and three other dudes NOT named Woywitka. About 70% of the place erupted into booing. I hope JD heard it in the team box and got on the phone to somewhere looking for another stock split. Screw this guy. I’m done with him.
Another possible name for E. Coli = Caligula.
Manny is amazing. Dude plays his heart out.
Jackman is not afraid to do the things he did years ago. While the fighting may be gone or lessened, he still hits and face-washes with the best. It is good to see him doing so after he avoided contact all last season. He is a menace to opposing players and defends his keeper from a-holes looking to do damage.
Although it turned into a square dance, props to Woywitka stepping up to challenge a cheap shot on Perron. It’s good to see that someone is willing to tell some d-cheese that that crap will not be tolerated. I understand that there is fear of misconducts, but it is good to see someone risking it anyway.
Games at 1:00pm are unnatural and just plain wrong. I should not leave a game while the sun is still shining. Thank God is was very overcast at 4:00pm. It didn’t screw with my internal clock too bad.
Later all.
by Milo on Nov 29, 2008 11:41 PM CST reply actions
Oh, hey. One more… Perron has great sense on the ice. He follows his own short and gets his own rebounds. his stick blade seemingly contains a puck magnet around the opposing goal. Sure, he will fake his line-mates out of their jocks every once in a while, but you can’t deny his stick handling ability and overall ability to read the ice pretty well.
by Milo on Nov 29, 2008 11:46 PM CST reply actions
Good stuff, Milo, thanks. Weren’t we playing a more control game at the begining of the season? I know we’ve got injuries, but is it too complicated of a system for the checking guys to play one way and the skill lines to play another? The Perron line looked like they were trying to get some stuff going, but maybe need to get to know Backes better? I thought Steen looked okay today, but his partners didn’t impress me all that much (boyes goal was all Ketchup). Maybe Wallet had some good plays too, idk, the D just disappeared, though.
by Nancy's Boy on Nov 30, 2008 12:57 AM CST reply actions
word Milo. Family came over during the second. Which about the time that Edmonton scored I wasn’t paying attention to the game much anymore.
So as for the first period I didn’t see anything special about Steen. I’m still really liking Cola but I’m afraid to fallin love with him as fragile Jay’s brief stints on the IR are nothing compared to the trunk o’games Cola drags around with him. BUt he’s got to get onto a power play, there is absolutely no reason for Brewer to be on the power play. You could chose fromWyowitka, Cola or Polak to fit that role.
I’m tired of hearing this McKee needs to be traded crap. At first he looked overpaid, was hurt and didn’t look as solid last season. Completely healthy Jay is a defensive stud. He has made some great plays.
We all know the one that desperately needs to go. He’s the highest paid defensemen and every season holds the dubious title of the team’s worst defender.
I have to agree about Manny looking terrible. I’ve only seen him play two Manny like games this season. Something is either not right with him or he’s just not seeing the puck in some way. That is not an excuse for poor play though.
Mason must cross the line and become the goaltender he promised to be coming into last season before he looked like a one-hit wonder. We’ve seen it a handful of times here and now he is begining to be a stud consistently. If he plays great in Atalanta he takes the starting job imo.
Brian the reason for young Blues goaltenders sucking is because Wamsley is a horrible goaltending coach. Look at his record with young goaltenders. He ruins them. If I’m the Blues it’s time to cut him off and find a good goaltending coach from the province of Quebec.
by Chris D. on Nov 30, 2008 12:20 PM CST reply actions
Chris D: I agree on McKee’s play, I really like his game, the problem I have is the price tag, $4 mil to block shots is just too much. I also agree on the nameless d-man you referred to, the only reason I don’t even talk about him anymore is because they gave him the “C” and by all indications there’s a club wide love affair with this guy. I was going to try and lay off him because of they made him captain, but it’s sort of rediculous at this point. If he is really just a 3 or 4 on a good club, then why’d we give him OVER $4 mil. a year? I also agree with your d-men on the powerplay statement, I think Woywitka looks very servicable & I’m huge Polak fan. These two guys show a poise with the puck on their stick that McKee, Brewer, & Jackman(until maybe yesterday) just don’t have. Mckee & Brewer look like they’re about to have panic attacks if someone passes the puck their way. Mason still makes me nervous b/c he’s been real inconsistant throughout his career so far, I think he does better with the competition of another solid goalie. I’ve wondered about “Wammer” too, but didn’t LeClaire in cbj credit him with his good play? & I know Manny’s turnaround on fitness and positioning (which hasn’t looked great as of late) he credited to him, so you maybe right there, Ijdk.
