Flames At Blues Open Thread
![]()
By Brad Lee
The Calgary Sloppy Seconds are in town tonight. Puck drops early at 7 p.m. CST. No live blog, man. Gotta save the words for the paper tomorrow night.
Chris Mason is rumored to be in goal tonight, his fifth start in seven games. No, no, he's not the starter. Uh huh.
Enjoy the open thread. Remember the Blues are in action Saturday and Monday too. So pace yourself.
If you'd like the paper tonight and want to get hooked, I'll offer it to you tonight during the game. Drop me a line at gtbradlee@gmail.com. Remember, subscriptions pro-rated for the rest of the season are still available. Think of the issue tonight as a Friday night special.
See you in the comments.

what’s this two scoring lines tonight with some sprinkling on the third line whoa. And how is it Janssen remains in the NHL and Regier gets sent down???
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 6:35 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
As physical as the Flames are, I’d look to see a fight out of Janssen tonight

Unfortunately the poll question didn’t have MY favorite Mike Keenan look . . . the one where he’s laying dead in a pool of his own blood. In a sewer aqueduct.
But . . . c’est la vie, I guess.
Oh, and yes . . . . TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEJ!
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 6:46 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
no one knows ahead of time who’s starting for Calgary. Kipper kills St.Louis (10-0-1, 1.97 GAA versus the Blues), however McEllhinney is about due for a start

Please pardon my behavior, but I’m going to flash the finger every time I see Coach K-nine on TV.
by Hall Plante on Dec 5, 2008 7:06 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
HP . . . I’ll one-up ya. I’ll give him the ol’ “Up Yours”.
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 7:06 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Hall just be loud and proud and say it…FUCK you Mike Keenan!!!
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 7:07 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Alright. So our armed forces get to see this overseas, too.
Think about it. Is it a reward or a punishment to get to see the Blues overseas?
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 7:09 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
How gay two stupid fuckers fighting for what reason? What are they regulating? Fucking worthless non-NHL caliber players

King I got to see five minutes of Blues hockey in sixteen months in Iraq I always wanted to see them even at their shittiest
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 7:12 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
That was one helluva long fight.
Sounds like they had a few previous bouts
by Poor College Student on Dec 5, 2008 7:12 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
and that’s if you have time to see it or a tv to watch it on or want to give up sleep or speaking with your family or just hanging out with the guys.
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 7:13 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Gotcha Chris. So it’s a reward. I’m cool with that.
Was Prust trying to take out Janssen’s Adam’s Apple?
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 7:13 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
they might be cathing in Iraq right now at breakfast in the chow hall.
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 7:13 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
20 years for Keenan in the league.
- Question: Why?
by Poor College Student on Dec 5, 2008 7:15 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
i think Steen has shot the puck wide more times than he has a shot on goal…4 gp and one shot on goal.
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 7:17 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Keenan has done something our team never has…Won a Cup and his record is above .500 both speak of accomplishments. He had issues when he came to us with his ego. I think he has actually worked those out now.
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 7:18 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Keenan can still eat a big plate of horse cock.
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 7:22 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah. That call was more than obvious.
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 7:25 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
i’m more worried about having players like Brewer and Janssen on our team than what Keenan does. he’s fucked anyway. his team is fairly shitty.

Janssen vs. Prust from the juniors!! started out the same way as tonight. but ended way different
by Dooks on Dec 5, 2008 7:27 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
that’s the stupidest explanantion for a fight. Guess what Jackman?….I can think of three million or so reasons why you should be sparked up to play every game!!!!!!!!!!
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 7:27 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
the power plays look so much better without Brewer out there.
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 7:29 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
BACKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK YEAH!
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 7:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
WTF? I tune in at 7:30 like my new desktop-schedule says, and the first period is already more than halfway thru ????
Shit.
Well, at least I got to see Backes score. Evenin’ all !!!
by Tim on Dec 5, 2008 7:32 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
More hot, steamy power play action. I’m so enthused.
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 7:33 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

Phaneuf gets two for “Fucking Around”.
Nevermind, it was tripping.
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 7:35 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Good to see Backes put one in.
by Poor College Student on Dec 5, 2008 7:36 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
i thought Dion took a penalty b/c of his newly aquired anger issues, after he tripped over a Blues player and was pissed about it
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 7:36 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
So why did David Perron have to earn his time on the ice last season but Coca-Cola gets 1st unit PP time when he’s been here a minute?
by Joe on Dec 5, 2008 7:36 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
that and all the shit he’s no doubt been hearing about his girlfriend…wonder if Oshie asked him if she would date him or did he also need to be a Canadian

joe did that answer your question or was it the choice of him or brewer?
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 7:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Jackman should’ve gone after Bertuzzi’s head.
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 7:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Umm yes. I mean, I like Cola. But you’re right. He sure as hell beat Brewer out the.
by Joe on Dec 5, 2008 7:41 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Wow, I sound like a moron with that comment. “He sure as hell beats Brewer out there.”
by Joe on Dec 5, 2008 7:42 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Good plays in the last couple of minutes on a shot block/transition play by Steen and Tkachuk stickhandling near the blueline keeping Celene Dion Phaneuf at bay. No points to show for it, but certainly a good sign
by Poor College Student on Dec 5, 2008 7:43 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Dominant first period. Blues are playing with a lot of energy. I don’t care if they lose as long as they play hard … OK i care if they lose, but its easier to take as long as I see some E.
by Joe on Dec 5, 2008 7:44 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Not a bad first period. And a two-goal lead to boot.
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 7:45 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

when they did Murray’s home was anybody else puzzled by Murray talking about coaching for Canada and loving your country when his home was in Minnesota???
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 7:57 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Any fight involving a goaltender would be just fucking awesome. Too bad they don’t do it too often.
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 7:57 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I believe you’re right Chris, but . . . I’m pretty sure he coached Canada in the last international tournament.

if I got a job that paid me a more valuable money and lots of it and my own country really didn’t I’d kind of think of changing my alliegiance. not that it can be bought for a few dollars…well hell yeah I’d sell my alliegiance for some millions of dollars…as long as it wasn’t selling military secrets or something like that

is it just me or was that intermission like 5 minutes?
by Dooks on Dec 5, 2008 8:02 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think 5 minutes was all we got of an intermission aside from FSM Cribz.
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 8:03 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
where’s Polak on the PK? I hate to see Brewer on the right side in his own zone.

dual citizenship is about the stupidest fucking thing in the world. i say by the time you’re twenty-five you should pretty much have it figured out. if you grew up in the US say and also were say a dual citizen of Isreal. I mean what happens if there’s tough decision or something? Oh well as long as Murray is paying his taxes I suppose.

by Christine on Dec 5, 2008 8:04 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
good start to the second … mason is still going strong.
by Tim on Dec 5, 2008 8:05 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I hope Mason becomes the elite starter we have been lacking for years. No offense Manny you’re awesome and all but really the greatest backup ever.
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 8:05 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yes Christine. He started. He just hasn’t been seen much because the Blues pretty much dominated the first period.

by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 8:09 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

Whew…after last Saturday I was fearing them coming out without energy. They are playing great tonight. Oshie should be the next Captain. Obviously he comes back into the line up and there’s a more palpable intensity from the BLues. Ok maybe it’s not all true but I;d like to think it is true. Listen Parris the jucking killer bees played on Houston. the fuck we want that nickname.
sweet i have boyes and cola and mason in my fantasy line up tonight! earlier in the year i dropped devin deteguchi b/c he wasn’t getting any power play time back then god damn it!! grrr…

one of my favorite Stevie D moments, was the ad for the sporting goods store. Steve Duschene and Marc Bergevin are the “cops” that bust a fan breaking into the store. The punchline is the two of them singing “bad boys bad boys, whatcha gonna do?” in their THICK French-Canadian accents.

your welcome nancy boy and sorry to hear that. and dan no we don’t see local commercials all the commercials are usually bought through the armed services network. most things are prerecorded. when i watched the cardinals in the world series with my buddy from detriot those games were on at like 3 in the morning in iraq. people would be working out in the gym we were at. that was only good thing about being sent down to baghdad, the gym was close. otherwise i caught the last game of for the Cup Edmonton Carolina waiting for a plane back to the states supposedly ending my tour and watching the World Cup games with the Hajis who had local broadcasts. and in baghadad we had one room b/c they didn’t have room for us so a bunch of guys had television and the satelite=armed forces BS and one guy always had the Irish games on.
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 9:19 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

we should consider trading either kariya or mcdonald after what i’ve been seeing and considering what’s coming in next season
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 9:27 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Chris: Not ever going to happen either way. But for the sake of argument, I’d scratch Brewer.
by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 9:28 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

by Nancy's Boy on Dec 5, 2008 9:28 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
joe i agree but bring up Lemy and shed some salary while creating room for the talent. maybe something to consider in the off season anyway
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 9:29 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
that one-timer from IceBerg should have sealed it.

by Donut King on Dec 5, 2008 9:30 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
As long as the team is under the cap, I say the Blues horde talent. But it would be an idea to at least dump Kariya IF the team gets something go for him.
by Joe on Dec 5, 2008 9:30 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
next season joe we should eller, palushaj and sonne ready for sure…also livingstone and mcrea will be close
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 9:30 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Perron is going to be awesome once he adds another 10 pounds of muscle and stops getting pushed around as much.
by Pagan on Dec 5, 2008 9:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
OK, I take it back, that was a good shot by Perron.
by pdub on Dec 5, 2008 9:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
joe maybe we trade Kariya to Atlanta for Kovalchuk as he obviously doesn’t want to be there and they get a guy guarenteed for at least another year.
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 9:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
fuckin shit. we usually own the 3rd. we dominated the first two and let it go in this third and now we gotta go to overtime when we should’n’t have to
by Dooks on Dec 5, 2008 9:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
heh heh heh … that settles another thing. if lemtyugov ever gets called up, his nickname is Motorhead….
by Tim on Dec 5, 2008 9:32 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
pagan Perron gets better with each game. remember us men don’t fully grow all our muscles until about 27 years of age
by Chris D. on Dec 5, 2008 9:32 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Palushaj is a stud!
& I thought Sonne was supposed to be like Holmstrom, but his numbers indicate that’s not nearly enough credit, plus he’s not a D-B.
by Nancy's Boy on Dec 5, 2008 9:33 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
@Chris D. I’d take Kovie in a second … however I doubt the Thrash would deal him for PK. Karyia isn’t getting younger and is not that cheap. It’s a nice dream, but doesn’t seem too realistic.
by Joe on Dec 5, 2008 9:33 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
No argument from me Chris. I loves some Perron. But with the way he’s already playing, he’s going to be a monster when he grows into a man.
by Pagan on Dec 5, 2008 9:34 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
we might have to give one other thing but how many free agents will head to Atlanta of the upper tier? but yeah it’s mostly a dream. i say trade him and get a couple of draft picks keep the pool stocked so you can deal with the cap.

at least we got a point unlike last Saturday. i’m going with trade kariya because obviously too many injuries and this team is looking more and more like they’ll be getting a high draft pick. personally I’m really liking the American sniper on the USDT. That kid’s a pure goal scorer. Fuck Taveres, he’ll be great but he’s not the greatest skater.

kinda like wife swap.. except hockey players =P
by Christine on Dec 5, 2008 9:50 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
GRRRRR… Actually, I’m going to point a finger at Mason. The Blues actually had that first PK under control when the puck goes back to him and he looks at it while it sits in the crease forever. no communication, no movement, no reaction, even when the Flames started bearing down. All he had to do was to freeze the damn puck for a face off. It was, quite possibly, the dumbest thing I’ve seen a goaltender do short of scoring on himself.
Zero shots on goal in the third period five-on-five… that’s not going to win you many, either. It’s a little disturbing that teams that play us physical in our own building are able to come back. We haven’t backed down in the first period, but then it’s like, “Whew, we weathered the storm, now we can just play skate n’pass.”
The worst part is that Keenan left town with two points. He’s so overrated as a coach. See you tomorrow, 320 as usual.
