Woywitka Recalled
By Brian Weidler, "Game Time" Prospect Department
The St. Louis Blues today recalled defenseman Jeff Woywitka from Peoria of the AHL.
Woywitka, a 6-02, 215-pound left-shooting blueliner, is having a career year in Peoria, with 10-19-29 totals, a plus-17 mark, and 33 PIM in 50 games, good for ninth place in the AHL defenseman scoring parade.
Woywitka will replace injured defender Christan Backman in the Blues' lineup while Backman is on IR, but upon Backman's return, the Blues will have a decision to make, as Woywitka would have to clear waivers in order to be sent back to Peoria.

Let’s hope this is Backman’s ticket out of town.

my first thought when i heard backman had a broken foot was “how the hell are we going to trade him now?” apparently, it may only be a couple weeks, so i guess he could be on the trading block anyway. i just wonder how valuable he will be.

I can’t believe that the Blues could actually consider putting Wyowitka on waivers — he’d be snatched away immediately. Something’s going on. I sense a trade.
My senses are usually way off…

Hey Brian, I think a posting of your interview with Woywitka that just ran in GT would be extremely timely.

while you (self-admittedly) may be way off, marcus, i can see where you’re coming from. if backman is really only going to be on IR for a week or two, woywitka seems to be an odd callup, especially when the justification for shuttling wagner between peoria and st. louis was that he wouldn’t have to clear waivers.

There HAS to be something going on. There were two “suits” at the gym today talking in the locker room about this. No one ever talks in the locker room.

Ask and ye shall receive, sir… Check the front page.
RE: Trade speculartion. I agree that it makes zero sense to bring Woywitka up if the Blues are going to risk sending him back through waivers in a couple of weeks.
One would almost HAVE to think a trade was coming soon, although I’m not convinced it’s Backman that’s going to be sent packing.
Jackman would more likely bring a better return as a rental, and he’s a pending UFA.

What team in their right mind would take on Backman’s salary in light of his play this year and now injury? I just don’t see him being the one on the move unless the Blues pick up a part of his salary.
Jackman may be the one to go. With as well as Salvador has played this year I would be shocked to see him traded. These next few weeks are going to be very interesting indeed.

All I want to know is…can Woywitka play the point on the PP?

He does with the Rivermen, but Micki DuPont is pretty much the PP quarterback there. Woywitka is the defensive support for DuPont, but Woywitka can hammer it from the blueline, and he does have some PP points this year.

assuming that nothing is up, what would happen?
Woywitka actually cleared waivers last year, they may just be risking it again.
perhaps Walker, or even bEckman, is going to be sent down in 2 weeks

Well, they can send Backman down to the minors for “conditioning” after his IR stint. Also, I’m not sure that being an injury replacement is subject to the waiver rule. Anybody?

eh, they will just keep turning the d-men into 4th line wingers until someone decides to score

according to jd, since woywitka cleared waivers in training camp, he can play up to 10 games (or 30 days) and be sent down without having to clear waivers again, so maybe the cloak and dagger trade talk was a bit premature. it’s fun to speculate, though.
