Prospect Department Mock Draft Results
By Brian Weidler, "Game Time" Prospect Department
Recently, your GTPD completed a Mock Draft at the Hockey's Future web site. We think we've gotten a pretty good haul of future prospects for the Blues organization in this mock, and present our results here for your perusal and comments.
One note: There's no 33rd-overall pick in this draft for the Blues, because we traded that pick, along with Jay McKee and Jay McClement, to the Ottawa Senators for dynamic young center Antoine Vermette. Vermette has averaged 21 goals per season over the last three years, is still a young 25 years of age, and has an affordable contract at just over $1 million per season. Our thinking is that he can combine with LW Lee Stempniak and rookie T.J. Oshie at RW to form a dangerous third line, and all three players on that line can take faceoffs if need be.
In the mock draft, as expected, Tampa Bay chose Steven Stamkos first overall. Los Angeles took D Zach Bogosian, and Atlanta followed with another defense pick, selecting Luke Schenn in something of a surprise move. Then, it was the Blues' turn...

With the fourth pick in the 2008 Entry Draft, the St. Louis Blues are pleased to select, from the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League, defenseman Drew Doughty.

DRAFT BREAKDOWN BY COUNTRY OF ORIGIN:
... USA ... 3 [ HJELLE, LEE, LONG ]
... SWE ... 2 [ ERIKSSON, ULLSTROM ]
... CAN ... 1 [ DOUGHTY ]
... CZE ... 1 [ STRANSKY ]
... FIN ... 1 [ NIEMI ]
COMMITMENTS:
HJELLE (CRA/USHL) ... MINNESOTA-DULUTH (WCHA)
LEE... (EDINA HS) ... NOT COMMITED (GRADE 11)
====================
GTPD NOTES ON THESE PICKS:
DOUGHTY: We had Doughty as the #2 defenseman available in the draft on our list, behind Bogosian. When Atlanta went with Schenn (whom we have at #3), Doughty was an easy choice. With the (mock) trade of McKee and McClement, we feel that Vermette and Doughty can step in and fill the holes left in the NHL roster by that move, and that we've upgraded the Blues in both positions.
NIEMI: This is a player we really, really like at the GTPD. Niemi is gritty, tough, has a slapshot that we'd love to see Al Macinnis work with and refine (both of his shots at the Top Prospect competiton were 92.0 MPH), and he has offensive upside, particularly on the power play. Give him two more seasons to dominate in the best junior league in the world, and he should be reay to step right in to the Blues' lineup in 2010.
ULLSTROM: Somewhat of an "off-the-board" pick, but as another poster mentioned in the Mock Draft thread, "a very St. Louis-y pick, and a good one." We concur. Since he was drafted from a Euro junior league, he could come over and play in the AHL as early as next season, and we would make a very strong push for him to do just that. He's physically mature and has a nose for the net.
LONG: Nothing but offense, which the Blues can certainly use in the system. Not the biggest or toughest guy in the world, but he can score, and is a great set-up man at the junior level. He's got one more year of junior eligibility left before he can come play in Peoria, but his 100-point skills will be a welcome addition to the Rivermen lineup in 2009.
LEE: This year's GTPD "Tomas Kana Special," the player we're going out on a limb right now to predict will be a member of the Blues' organization after the upcoming draft. This kid has size, skill, attitude, intelligence, hockey sense, and pure athletic ability -- he plays the "pressure" positions in three sports, the positions in which the game is heavily influenced by his individual performance, and he thrives on it. Lee is only a junior this year, which means he still has another year of high school to play before going to college (similar to Matthew McCollem when the Blues drafted him in 2006), and it's a good bet that he'll take a step up to stronger competition and play in the USHL next year.
STRANSKY: Led his Plzen junior team in scoring this year, and got a cup of coffee (with cream and sugar) in the Czech Extraliga at age 17. He's a goal scorer who can also make plays and set up his linemates; he does tend to play the Euro perimeter game somewhat, but that can be coached out of him.
ERIKSSON: We look at this kid as a possible Michal Handzus in the making. He has some scoring upside, but his most important traits are leadership, character, defensive awareness and team play. This is the kind of kid who will skate through a brick wall for you, and he also has no problem with standing up for his teammates.
HJELLE: Pronounced like "jelly," this kid has all the tools to be a solid pro. His attitude and approach to the game is rock-solid, he has been well-groomed and well-coached, and his style is economical and lends itself to making the saves look easy. Hjelle will stand between the pipes for Minnesota-Duluth next season, and his commitment to a college program was a big factor in why we chose him for the Blues. Hjelle can be safely tucked away in Duluth for the next four years, while the quartet of Schwarz, Bishop, Toivonen and Berra get sorted out.
Your observations are welcome in the "Comments" area, and, until the real draft takes place here in just a few weeks, remember... "if we do not prepare for ourselves the role of the hammer, there will be nothing left but that of the anvil." Auf wiedersehen.

Does everyone get these stupid question marks in inappropriate places, and international characters (umlauts, etc.) replced by gibberish… or is it just me?
In any case, it’s annoying as hell…

I’ve seen them before, in Brad’s posts, so don’t feel bad.
I like the look on that HS kid, seems like a future captain in the making. I’m surprised we didn’t pick a G higher, it would seem we need to constantly replenish the ranks, no?

Please tell this trade you reference for the “Two Jays” is not reality.

Pretty indepth. I like a lot of the players you mention. The later rounds will be the interesting ones. There are some other players that are also very interesting coming into the second round. I still have a feeling there will be a big trade or two at this draft. I expect to be shocked when this draft comes around. The reason for this is because there are a number of teams that are below the minimum cap. Also a number of teams are missing pieces to be competitive especially the Tampa Bay Lightening.

What’s wrong with the trade?

nothing. the mock draft problems stem from they do not includ trades. i’d love to see the blues move mckee or brewer draft day in just about any deal that gets them room for f.a. money and a pick.
not sure ottawa is stable enough to want all that extra salary at the moment though. I mean no head coach, rumors of them buying out ray emery, etc etc.
am prob just concerned about ottawa getting jayed out of the playoffs next season with that deal :(

Under Long’s pluses you forgot to mention the hair. Do they make helmets that hold that much mousse? Or is that a Cameron Diaz special?

you know if one were to dream big one should dream of Eric Brewtal being traded to someone. Of course, now that his shoulder is fixed the sky’s the limit, look out he might score 29 pt.s again…can’t wait for that brand of solid play.
again i am expecting a handful of big trades to go down. when the scouts believe and it appears to this deep of a draft and some teams need pieces with salary space and others looking to cut some salary and the trend towards young talent, gms trying to prove themselves, new gms coming in, i’d expect this to get very interesting quick. then again, so many are afraid to make moves, it could end being like when two top scoring teams meet up and play 2-1 game or two defensive teams and it ends up being 6-5.

I just like both Jay McKee and McCelement. I haven’t see n much of the Antoine fellow. He sounds fruitty but you never know. I think McKee adds so much we’ll never understand.
by Answer Man on Jun 2, 2008 8:23 AM CDT reply actions
well ya got me there AM.
I certianly don’t understand what jay mckee adds. I know what he subtracts. 4 million.
if nothing else a.v. would add lots of ways to make fun of his name, a gt mission. so we get that. (vermin, vermacelli, Tony V, Auntie V, ad infinitum)
and 4 million.
but again, sens not in a happy place so no way they do that deal. at least not until after they jetison their “trash” (while might include emery) hire a coach, promise the sun and the moon to the fans, and give their gm the kiss o death “vote of confidence” from ownership.
that won’t be by draft day :)
not sure who ran the mock draft for the sens, but brian spayed and neutered him with that deal.

Andy Murray’s son Jordan played peewees with Anders Lee growing up for the Minnesota Blades AAA club. Kid is closer to 220 now as CSS had him at 213lbs. Here is QB and hockey footage on youtube.

THanks for the info, Brad. The GWG from the Burnsville game is the action shot I posted of Lee in the article above.
6-02, 213 (at least) at age 17, and those kinds of skills… the more I hear and see of this kid, the more convinced I am that he’s the GT Tomas Kana Special this year.

“When Atlanta went with Schenn (whom we have at #3), Doughty was an easy choice.”
I really, really, really don’t want to see Shenn in a Blues uniform. I am not convinced that he has much offensive upside and the Blues need offensive D-men firts and foremost. Why would you even consider this guy?
by Pagan on Jun 3, 2008 4:00 PM CDT reply actions
Burnsville?! They suck. I am a Bloomington guy all the way.

Jeff Gordon: Actually, I’m intrigued by the top international skater, Nikita Filatov. He is a high-risk, potentially hight-reward scoring winger. I’d rather see the Blues go there than a defenseman like Schenn, who won’t have the skills to help their power play over the long term.
