Blues Win A Wild One

So referees, you want to give the Bruins a shady 5-on-3 late in the game to let them come from behind? No worries. For once the hockey gods got the Blues' backs.

For those of you who were stuck at work (and actually had to do something other than watch an internet stream of the Blues game), here are the highlights.

Our favorite part? When the Boston announcer says, "It'll take a miracle now" seconds before David Backes makes everything alright.

Two other questions for you:

1. Doesn't Oshie's shootout move look just like the one he used to beat Khabibulin at the start of the season?

2. How sweet was it that Boyes got the chance to win the game in Boston?

I always figured you went commando.

Used to be Aaron, but some douchebag Celtics fan has that one already.

Freakin miracle. Nice chin stand Thomas.

That was incredible.

Amazing double-save by Mason on that last breakaway attempt, keeping the score 3-2. Then … the “are you shitting me” goal by Backes, a perfect baseball swing keeping the stick at the crossbar level with what … a second left? And then yeah, the move by Oshie had the same effect as the Thai Chi from Hot Rod that makes a grown man shit his pants.

I was at our local ECHL affiliate’s game so I missed a good bit of this… I got the text on my phone when Boston scored their goals and just kinda figured we were toast. And then I got a weird one saying that Perron scored… I figured that hey, no shame in losing to Boston by one. And then I got the text saying that Backes scored with less than a second left, and frankly I thought that they sent it on accident. I got home in JUST enough time to catch the OT and SO, and by God, that was amazing. It’s so nice to catch a break once in a while, you know? We’re only 9 points out of a playoff spot, and we might not be in last place by the end of the week. I’m not getting all delusional, but it’s nice to be positive about the Blues (and Thrash, but that’ll be over with at 9:30 tomorrow) for once this year.

If you have DTV Sports Pack you can turn on the NESN Network right now and catch the last half of the game replay.

“Miracle On MLK” they are calling it in STL. Ranks right up there with the other “Monday Night Miracle”.

Where to start...

I caught the entire game on atdhe.net UNTIL the Macbook ran out of juice with five minutes left in the game (perfect timing, right?). I plugged it in and navigated to the site again, but it wouldn’t load, so I was KMOX-ing for the fun stuff.

David-freaking-Backes - I am so pissed I didn’t treat myself to a Backes jersey last year (thanks stimulus-check!). He never, EVER takes a shift off. And to bring in a little bit of conversation from the Asylum…yes, he should be the next captain…and yes, that added responsibilty and respect will help him cut down on some of his more ill-timed/poor-judgment penalties.

From what I hear, the Blues got hosed again, huh? This time with late suspect penalties? I want to believe in fair play and all that, but the conspiracy theorist in me is really starting to think that the NHL, in an effort to “keep the games exciting” has told the refs to create phantom calls to assist the losing team.

Andfor what it’s worth, I feel Steen, Winchester and Crombeen have a place on this team as long as they want (assuming they don’t price themselves out). Those three mesh wonderfully in their respective roles. And as far as Steen goes, I don’t think I’ve seen a player with a better passing-eye wearing the Note in quite some time.

Here’s hoping FSN-Midwest picks up the NE feed and replays the end of the game on Wednesday. Anyone tuning in to that game deserves to see the end of this one.

I once shot a man just to see him die...then I got distracted and missed it.

on the penalties

Hinote’s ‘elbowing’ penalty looked like a good check to me. I didn’t see an elbow up.
Backes’ ‘hooking’ was more of a crosscheck, but it wasn’t even that bad. I’ve seen lots worse than that go uncalled.

If anyone has a copy of this game

I will pay you 100,000 I.O.U’s to send it my way. I only got to see the highlights, but this game looked like one that would have caused much yelling (anger and excitement) through the whole game. Stupid job that didn’t take off for MLK day……

Once again multiple noise complaints were filed against me by people on my floor. Im using the highlights of this game as proof that my actions were justified

Oshie's Move

Although great, he uses that move on every shootout attempt. True, it works almost every time, but eventually goalies will start learning.

(Did anybody see the Blues Prospects Camp game this past summer? Oshie tried that move on his college team goalie — sorry, can’t remember his name — and an easy save was made. Goalie saw that move too many times before I think.)

Of course he'll have to do something different

But that’s such an awesome sell on the wrister he can just add wrinkles to that more or less. If he mixes in just a snapshot here and there that, or derivations thereof, will remain effective.

Not afraid to nitpick

Keystone Lake Zamboni falls through thin ice

A Zamboni took a dip in North America's largest groomed skating pond at Keystone Resort tonight.
A driver was grooming the lake at about 6:15 p.m., when the ice cracked and the 7,000-pound machine began to sink at about 6:15 p.m. As a precaution, skaters were cleared from another area of the 5-acre pond, resort spokesman Ryan Whaley said. The driver was not injured.
There was no word immediately on how soon the rink might re-open, but staff will examine the ice and remove the Zamboni Wednesday, Whaley said.
"They'll take it out and we'll see how it is," Whaley said of the machine and the safety of the ice around the crater.
With a lake that large, other areas could reopen immediately, he said.

Once it dries out, the machine is likely salvageable, he said.
Kenneth Waesche snapped a photo of the sunken ice machine when he stopped by Lakeside Village for a pickup game of hockey. His wife planned to do some skating.
Waesche said that the "thin ice" sign in the foreground of the photo was some distance away from where the Zamboni went in.
The lake is typically open from Dec. 18 to March. 28 depending on the weather, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
