Who Is The Best St. Louis Blue
Time for a popularity contest. I mean, the Blues have played four games and not since Saturday. There's not a ton to talk about. So let's stir the pot and see if we can get some debate going on.
We already have our decision that we're going to write about tomorrow, but today it's for the masses to decide the best player in St. Louis (in the NHL).
At this point right now with the St. Louis Blues, who is the best player on the team? That means right now, not at the end of the year or in five years or what some may think a player's career ceiling might be. Let's narrow it down.
At forward, the nominees are: David Backes, Paul Kariya, David Perron, Patrik Berglund, Andy McDonald, T.J. Oshie, Keith Tkachuk and Brad Boyes.
On defense...well that's kind of work in progress. If you like Erik Johnson or Carlo Colaiacovo then "OTHER" is the vote for you.
And then there's the bald, bearded-one, Chris Mason.
When you vote, leave a sentence in the comments. Take a stand, tell us who you think is the best player on the Blues.

If it's based solely on the four games in 2009
Walt’s the easy choice.
If it’s a mixture of past and future returns, I’d give the slight nod to Oshie over Boyes.

I noticed that in the home games as well. The Shadow Nose has been doing a very solid job on both ends of the ice and I was happy he go a goal on Saturday (I thought he might get one Thrusday as hard as he was playing)

So far...
It’s got to be Walt. He brings it every night. I don’t think that I have ever seen him take a shift off anyway, but this season he seems like he’s working doubles.
The kids need to pick up on his example.

i'm saying other
ej for no reason.
ok i got a reason and it is this. his injury preseason, doomed the blues in the eyes of jd. this season the blues did not add anything but a healthy pk and ej to make the team better. ej is a sophomore with expectations crushing down on him already, and he better be one of the blues best players this year or the blues won’t do much.

To back up Walt...
There was this gem of a quote in the BND:
“I like going down there,” said the 37-year-old Tkachuk, who signed a one-year, $2.15 million contract extension in June. “That’s where I score.”

Rule #1 = get the puck to big Walt
Rule #2 = don’t forget rule #1.
Walt’s been the team’s best player in the four games played.

McDonald should be our best player, but I like our team so much I really don’t care.

Berglund...
Because I don’t like the question. Instead, I answered: who has the most potential upside in the future? Which is Berglund.
Sometimes, I wonder why hockey came south of St. Louis, and then I realize, I'm south of St. Louis. Coincidence, I think not.

WALT
Currently Walt is the best player.
Kariya – the 6 million dollar man can be if he plays up to his potential and stays healthy (and if they could fully rebuild him…they do have the technology…bionic hips maybe?)
McDonald/Boyes – possibly but not currently
Oshie/ Big Johnson along with Perron/Berglund – not there yet…maybe in a year or a few years but not just yet.
Mason- too limited a body of work with the Blues as well. really just half a season being the best player last year.

ANDY MAC
I’m kind of surprised by all the votes for Tkachuk on here. I agree that Walt is easily the best current Blue based on the entire course of his career, and his contribution to this team is unquestionable. But I understood the questions to be “Who is the best Blue right now”, and Tkachuk isn’t exactly the force he was. He’s a valuable role player at this point, but not someone I would consider the best forward on the team. Anyway, I went with McDonald. He’s been off to a slow start this season and was hindered by injuries last year, but he wasn’t invited to Team Canada camp for nothing. He’s the fastest player on the Blues, the smartest player on the Blues, the best passer on the Blues (sorry Paul), and he has the biggest visor in NHL history. ’nuff said.

AMAC
He backs people off with his speed and goes into the corners to muck when needed. He brings it every game I’ve seen unlike many on the Blues who seem to take games off. Kariya has been hearing footsteps since Stevens launched him into Camp Happyland. Walt is a strong contender but just too long in the tooth anymore. Oshie disappearing in the playoffs has me wondering was he hurt or just overwhelmed with the big show?

Other
Best player in 2009-10: Silent Jay. He is the leader of the shutdown “4th line,” a key penalty killer, and can score a few goals. No matter how the team is playing, Silent Jay hasn’t disappeared.

Basterd
I was in the middle of a long drawn out post explaining me picking Silent Jay, but you go and steel it. I’ll poit it anyway
Admited, he’s not a scorer, but if you asked me “What Blue is the best at his job” I wouldn’t even pause to tell you it’s Jay McClement. And that’s how I answer questions like this. He’s certainly the best defensive forward we’ve got, and he’s playing on a 4th line that has played well defensivly and offensivly. And since we’re generally a time that’s struggled at even strength, his talent has certainly been needed.
Also, I’m gonna give an honorable mention to Alex Steen, who plays solid defensive hockey, and actually TAKES FUCKING SHOTS! Alex Steen has shot Oshie, Beglund, and Perron COMBINED so far this year. Put the puck on the fucking net, and tha’s what Steens doing.

Damn i said steener but id have to agree with you on silent jay
and the shots, thank you sir
take some fucking shots, when you are outshot by 10 on a nightly basis your not going to get many lucky goals, or good goals for that matter
anyone remember last year when our powerplay fooled around with the puck vs vancouver, the only guy shooting was jackman, over and over and over, and everyone with a shot worth taking just passed around
idk anyway, new season new day, i have to go with silent jay
steener is close though, i like that guy

Steen
has really surprised me this season – 14 shots so far. Glad ONE finally went in.
The dude has worked his socks off so far and that line of Steen, McClement and Crombeen is as good as any.

As of right now:
I’d have to say Walt (and I did…before I realized I wasn’t logged in)
He’s been sold & a veteran leader out there on the ice. He may not be the fastest or the most agile, but good Ol’ Walt is solid.
Its a damn good thing we resigned him!!

I don't like this question
Therefore, I refuse to vote. It’s like asking someone which one of their kids is more talented? Yes, we all know that your concert violinist/track star/class president kid is obviously more talented than that stoner who plays video games in your basement and occasionally calls you mom, but only when he needs cash or Cheetos… but a parent wouldn’t actually say that… probably…
So even though, at this moment, I would probably vote for Walt or Steen because they’re the only ones I remember seeing at all in the last 4 games… I still refuse, because there’s a long season ahead and I have midterms this week, so I don’t have time to deal with the guilt that this kind of choice would bring

Tkachuk is by far our best player so far and one of very few ive been pleased with.. behind walt i gotta go with either McClement or Steen.. it sucks that they never really get any attention cuz all the talk is always about the kids (who arent doin a damn thing)

I voted Perron
but I should have thought more, because I think Steen’s been pretty good. Nobody has been great, but Perron has had some flashes, as has Steen. Walt too. EJ too. Crap.

I voted Perron as well,
watching him make people stupid is almost worthwhile compared to the mistakes he makes. I’m most excited for his potential performance over his actual so I will vote for the small miracles instead of the pugilism I usually preach for.

Andy Mac is a close second for me. He really looks like he’s giving 110% on each shift.
Steen would be third. At least he’s trying to get the puck on net.
I don’t understand all the Backes votes, though. I’m not putting down David Backes in anyway; he is awesome. But if you’re just looking at the last four games I don’t see what he’s been doing. In fact if I remember correctly I read today on Stltoday.com that he was benched for the entire 2nd period of the last game.
