Twitter Mainframe Says Mr. Roboto, Eric Brewer, Powering Up For Tonight
Yes, friends, our Captain is back ... from his back injury. According to a tweet (never gonna get used to saying that) by the Blues official twitter feed, Eric Brewer will make his 2009-10 season debut tonight against Phoenix.
Eric Brewer will play tonight against the Coyotes.
No word on who will be out of the lineup (Tyson Strachan or Alex Pietrangelo seem the likey candidates). More on this as it develops, but hey, the Captain returns. Joy?
(EDIT FROM BRAD)
Do you see what the Blues did here? They didn't give any informative updates since training camp. They didn't want his rehab and pending return to be talk show fodder for the month of October. They intentionally wanted Brewer to be a non story. And they accomplished it. The only thing I question is why they're choosing for his game to be at home. Sure he's the captain, but there will be boos. Oh yes, there will be boos.
When healthy and happy and motivated, Brewer is a decent player in the offensive zone and solid in his own end. He takes some chances, and when he gets burned, it's usually in a loud and obvious way. So much has happened on this team since he was healthy. It should be interesting to watch his role on the team, the situations Andy Murray puts him in and how he gels with teammates.
Damn, I love that picture at the top.
We'll make this the pre-party. Hang out, stay awhile. And hat tip to Above Average Joe for getting this up on the site so quickly.

The picture is priceless
I hope they keep Pietrangelo he really seems to be stepping up his game and hopefully he doesn’t come with too much rust on him. They really should keep him well oiled when he’s not in use.

Hell, the headline and photo together were a 1-2 punch of laugh, then piss pants.
I’ve no idea what to expect of the refurbished Brewer 3000, but I do know this is going to be one intriguing experiment.

Rec'd.
It does seem rather ridiculous the guy hasn’t played for a full 11-12 months, and we’ve realdy decided he’s going to cost us the game.
I mean, I’m not Jackman’s biggest fan in the world, but I eagerly await his return just for the depth.
And maybe I’ll change my mind, but I’d rather see Brewer than Strachan. I don’t know how Strachan was last night, but he was abyssmal in that Wild game last week.

his suckitude is HISTORIC

So he had a bad plus/minus...
while playing for shitty teams? I mean this is a really weak argument here, it’s not like he was putting tes umbers up on a presidents trophy contender. It’s not a good thing, how about actually look at the situation before we call him out using generic stats.
I’m not thrilled per say about his return, but he’s a solid defensemen. The more solid D-Men the better… atleast until it means we send Pietrangelo down to Peoria, then we need to do something with one of em.

Thank you.
It’s fairly well-known that +/- is a beyond useless stat, particulary when discussing defensmen on suck-ass teams.

plus/minus
is not a worthless stat but nor is is a stat that necessarily can be used as an absolute, i was about to do a minus per game, but ya beaat me to even posting it.
minus per game:
komadoski .41 per game
brewer .27
gibbs .41
rivers .10
baron .05
salvy .03
nattress .28
stewart .33
afleck .30
wells .10
poeschek .10
backman .03
not appearing on list chubby turkey +5 career, sasha +28, kravechuk +1, mckee +8
you see his contempts in salvy doing 10 times better and his axed overpaid partner also outshining him. just not given the mad mad brewer looooooove
brewer is fail as a defense d-men compared to his own teammates and historicaly fail in any measure of production
so prove he doesn’t suck or shut up about me saying he does

but
you also have to remember that Brewer is not a #1 d-man yet, due to circumstances, he was forced to play the top line and given top line minutes.
At the end of the day though, he’s solid and can play big minutes – he also seems to have the respect of the team. Give me Brewer over Mike Weaver any day of the week.

what came first, the chicken or the egg?
is brewer’s plus/minus bad because the blues were a garbage team when he jumped on board? in 2007-08 andy mac was -17. so was jay mac. are you saying those guy HISTORICALLY suck? come on.
and seriously, using +/- solely to measure a d-mans worth is lazy and just flat-out wrong. in the blues president’s trophy-winning year, jeff finley AND marc bergevin had better +/- numbers than al macinnis. no one not on drugs will say that macinnis was not far more valuable to the blues that season than those two.
look, im not a huge fan of brewer. i wish he played more physical. i wish his flashes of great play weren’t flashes, but rather the norm, and i wish he wasn’t a damn robot. that being said, hes a solid second-pairing defenseman. hes a guy who can play 18-24 mins a night. hes better than strachan. hes better than weaver. putting him in the lineup means the d gets an upgrade. would you rather have strachan on the ice late of the third or brewer? id take brewer every time.

brewer i wish he were good, im a bit on the downside with him, the depth is nice, but jackman? are you kidding me? he coughs up the puck entirely to much for my liking and his style of play went out with scott stevens

Even a great player on a shitty team is going to have a bad +/-
Ovechkin on the 06-07 Capitals had -19, yet I don’t think anyone would have not wanted him there. Being on the first line means you play against the other teams first line too.

Okay, there are SO many other factors going into your first statement...
That reasoning is specious…AT BEST. The Blues in the 2nd half were not even the same team as the 1st half, and that had to do with about 500 things not named Eric Brewer (Mason > Legace, perhaps?).
I really think you’re putting too much stock in +/- trying to prove your point, and then attacking anyone that claims otherwise, even when they have legit counterexamples (namely, evidence that crappy teams breed crappy +/-).
Why don’t we just stop piling on the guy that hasn’t played in 12 months and see how the fuck he actually plays tonight? Is that too much to ask?
by Washoo on Oct 29, 2009 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
if your comment is
that brewer plays yadayadayada so he is great or he plays yadayadayada so no styat is valid
the only valid measures would be
a) to see what the team does without him
b) and what his d partner does without him who has the same basic role
brewer is a double fail on both those and was even before last season. but oh noooooooz they don’t support a brewer is god view so therefore they can be rejected without any evidence!
again prove he doesnt suck
what concievable notion of non suckitude can you pull out of someone’s ass that will suggest brewer is good
first off saying crappy teams = crappy +/- wasn’t proven by you. prove it :) you said it. itr isnt the same, you didnt even bother to go to a place and look up stats and see if checkers are higher minus on bad teams, etc. top d-men on bad teams run 4 times as bad a minus as their teammates. or is it the scorers?
i’ve eaten brewer shit sandwhiches for going on 5 years. why do i need another taste to have an opinion?
the reality is people give me shit for thinking brewer sucks and explkain it away. it is all a pile of crap I hate brewer and think he is shit because BREWER IS SHIT. i don’t care how we acquired him, i don’t care that we “have to overpay people to get them to play for us” i don’t care than AM gave him a c. what i care about is his big minutes = squalor, that “lesser” d-men consistantly outperform him and that jay mckee, whom i backed at the beginning of last year as better than brewer, jay proves it and the brewer butt wipers still have their heads burried in the ice and won’t even admit it. saaaaay it. just saayyyy it. JAY MCKEE outperformed eric brewer. I swear you won’t die. you’ll probably feel better!!
again. prove brewer is good or allow us who know better to make our opinions known without the prejudice.

I'm not saying Brewer is "god,"
…or even that he’s any good. I’m just saying your reasoning is specious, because it is. I’m sorry you can’t see that.
I’m not giving you shit for thinking Brewer’s not any good; I personally don’t think Jackman’s any good.
But I’m saying increased defensive depth is good, and I think I’ve seen enough of both guys play to know that I’d rather have Brewer out there than Strachan. But sure, Brewer sucks SO TREMENDOUSLY HARD that’s it better for the team if he doesn’t even fucking play even though we’re sorely lacking defensive depth. Right.
I’m saying I’m going to withold judgment on a guy that hasn’t played in a year until I actually see him play.
And I don’t want to get ad hominem, but I double-tired of opening SLGT and finding YET ANOTHER of your posts bashing the team, its management, or one of the players. I’m not saying you have to be a homer to post (Lord knows I’m less-than-happy sometimes), but Judas Tittyfucking Priest. Do you even LIKE this team?
And you think just because you can use Google and a calculator you’re some kind of fucking expert and can talk down to everyone else, when every hockey “expert” I’ve ever read says +/- is a pretty awful stat for judging a player’s worth, since it doesn’t take into account so many factors.
I bet the Detoilet clown car bandwagon still has some seats left. I think you’d fit in much better at A2M.

well thanks for not getting

imho you were talking down when you "proved " everything by merely saying bad teams get more minus. and i’ll always go after something like that. at LEAST get out google and a calc. jeez!
I have been supportive of mckee forever (except his salary) silent jay, colaiacova, kt, etc etc etc etc etc try to be supportive of jackman cos he used to have value in the old days. actually everyone but brewer and cam janssen. and am concerned about AM too i suppose. your selective reading. that would be pro about 35 people anti 3 or 4.
and to suggest i am here as a bandwagoner means you really lack any perspective on my blues history.
but at least you didnt get ad hominem on me :)
i mean i didnt come close to starting the brewer bashing, but oh lordy once SOMEONE did, brewer’s mighty horde swelled and got midevil about it all, didn’t they? lol
brewer IS the blues number one d, even half his supporters are embarassed by that. seems poretty negative to me. should i like brewer playing more than wear? i said i’d vasilate on that one, but come on. this team has made brewer its number 1 d-man three times, and your bloody well right i’m going to bitch about it. don’t want to read it? get the blues to figure out were brewer belongs in the depth chart..

Look,
I wasn’t trying to prove Brewer is any good, or deserves the #1 designation. I’m not even really trying to defend the guy.
I, and others, were just saying your insistence on +/- was improper, as was the tone you took with everyone with disagreed. Then you tried to act like you were the martyr in the debate.
What I WAS defending is that this team can only benefit from increased defensive depth. You seem so blinded by your hatred for Brewer that you can’t appreciate that.
You don’t like the guy, and that’s fine. But be reasonable. At least let him play one fucking game. At least appreciate defensive depth is a good thing.
And I wasn’t trying to say you were a bandwagoner, just that all Wings fans are.
Okay, I’m done. Carry on.

Umm, I'm still confused
Cause Brewer clearly isn’t our No.1 defensemen. Sure, he’s paid the most the money, but that does not equate to being our top defensemen (that honor would probably go to EJ)/
Sure, he’ll probably end up being a top 4 defensemen, but that’s probably what he should be.

aarrrgh
you keeep pulling me back iiinn
he was paid and re-upped with he first slot in mind, he has lost that to injury really not ej per se. when he was healthy last season he still clearly our #1. 2 minutes a game more than jackman, and jackman only that close cos he got more time in the post-brewer injury than normal.
now what ice time can we expect from him in the ej era?
i mean we might want and expect ej to take the #1 job, but he has been beaten out by mike weaver in serval games and currently averages 3 minutes less than brewer did when brewer was number one.
your bettng against murray showing brewerlove. I’m not convinved i can do that. his ice time SHOULD be signficantly less due to time off and getting his legs back, but in a month? will brewer have 25 minutes a game?
