Wednesday links: Eight is too much edition

Do the Blues still play hockey? I sure do miss them.

Blues news

  • You know those big books your parents used to use to look up "home" phone numbers? The Blues are on the cover of one. [Blues]
  • The Blues have eight healthy d-men. Don't think for one second that the team won't stay that way for a few games. [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]
  • Kelly Chase talks about playing with Brendan Shanahan. I'm just going to go ahead and say it, the fans love for Shanny lasted way, way too long for how little time he spent here. People still wax nostalgic about a man who played just four out of 21 years wearing the 'Note. [NHL.com]
  • Alex Pietrangelo should stay, but the Blues are being tight-lipped about what will happen with the youngster. [Belleville News-Democrat]

I think the Shanahan love

is more a love hate relationship. Not a hate for him but the fact that fans will be forever bitter that NJ took Stevens in that fiasco. Those 2 will forever be intertwined in St Louis.

The ESPN America poll is 65-35%. Project Mayhem is FAILING. WE DON"T FAIL. I think I’ve voted at least a dozen times. Who is not on board?

I think the Blues will keep Petro here and send him to the World Jrs in December.

shanny love

top 10 note goal scorer = top 10 luv!!!

the top 10

the fact he did it so short a time (277 games) shows how great he was :)

great post Trauma

i agree 100%, any argument against that joe?

by brado on Nov 18, 2009 10:17 PM CST up reply actions

my counter point goes a little something like this:

He played four seasons here. Four freaking seasons. He wasn’t the best player on the team and his arrival fucked over the franchise for years to come — the Scott Stevens fiasco. Shanny was a great player who I enjoyed immensely, but he was great because he was on a line with Hull and Janney. Besides Hartford, where he won nothing, was Brendan ever the best player on his team?

I loved watching him when he wore the Note. I think he’s a great player and a probable Hall-of-Fame guy, but the Shanny love just stayed too long. The Blues ended up handily winning the deal — how many times was Shanahan voted league MVP? — yet people pined away for the return of Brendan.

I will repeat just so I don’t get flagged for it: He was a great player and a great Blue, but he just didn’t do it long enough. The Blues sold high and got a better player yet fans constantly wanted him back when he wasn’t nearly as good — like I said earlier, how many 50 goal years did he have without the criminally underrated Craig Janney?

I’m just saying, the way he was/is loved I think people want a freakin’ statue of the dude. He just didn’t spend enough time here.

chicks did the long ball

and guys dig the physical scorers. see also: Oshie, TJ

blaming the trade for the emotions ya feel is something i get blamed with (even though i don’t) and everyone thinks it is putrid in the brewerr hating arena(everyone who hates brwewer just mad at the pronger traaaaade!!), wouldn’t it be just as bad ascribing extra hate to shanny (ok not hate so much as a reduction of deserved luv) cos the blues cheated?

on my end i love watching players grow up, and shanny did a hella grow job in those four years, from a flightly scorer to a man. he came in a young gun poised to sharpen his craft, and left a man with a hall of fame skill set. whats not to love?!?

and when he was lost i got to chill out my pain with some other young guy who needed to grow up on the ice in the note— certainly helped me not be bitter :)

p.s.

i had done additional math for my original post, but decided not to include it, sometimes people get mad you take out your calculator and your google lol. but shanny, of the blues top 20 all time goal scorers. is second in goals per game to only one blue- brett hull.

for the top ten it is something like:
hull .71, shanny .56, peterson and unger .44, demitra .41, kt .40 babych and sutter .39, federko .38 bereson .33 ertc etc etc

shanny one of only 2 of the main historic blues players to average a goal ever other game. the drop from .71 to .56 is huge, as is the drop from 56 to .44. then the “standard” good scorers all start bunching up.

Gotta agree

I love watching the players evolve during those prime 20’s.

And man I’d still love to have a retro Unger jersey. He was awesome for a preteen girl to watch

Chase
“I roomed with Brendan for several years and he and Brett Hull stood up for me at my wedding.”

Shit, somebody showed up to drop the gloves with Chaser even at his wedding?

That Shanahan/Tkachuk game Chase refers to, I mean it was just an epic moment whether you liked those characters or not. I think I still have the Sports section from a few days later, with a pic of Shanny’s lip. /runs to archives.

Was it Chase or Twist who had Shanny by the throat...

… when the team found out what he was doing with Craig Janney’s wife?

This is the reason I don’t understand the continued love for Shanahan. His actions off the ice forced the team to trade him. Screwing a teammate’s wife is pretty much the antithesis of “team player”.

Had that situation come up once out here

when I played in the old SCPHL. One g/f of a teammate wanted a roll in the hay and I just told her I’d love to but I wasn’t going to be looking over my shoulder in practice too.

Some days its just not worth chewing through the restraints

Wow.

I think i found an old Walt Jets card a while ago in my collection and about fell out of my seat. I can’t help it – we’re so used to “Old Walt” that I guess I assumed that he was just born that way.
