Rivermen rolling with five straight wins ... Pietrangelo, Allen named to Team Canada for U20 World Juniors ... Ian Schultz (Calgary, WHL) leads the "Trending Up" pack for this week.
PEORIA (SLGT) -- The Peoria Rivermen are officially the hottest thing going in the American Hockey League for the week ending Dec. 19, 2009.
Davis Payne's squad won their fifth consecutive game on Saturday night, 4-3 over the Abbotsford (BC) Heat. The Rivermen raced out to a 3-1 lead in the third period before Abbotsford - a dismal 0-for-their-last-19 on the power play to that point - scored a pair of quick tallies with the man advantage to tie the score. A last-minute goal by free agent defenseman Bryce Lampman, his second of the night, gave Peoria the win.
Peoria's current five-game win streak is the longest active streak in the AHL, and they are 8-2-0-0 in their last ten games. Only the Albany River Rats have a better mark (8-1-1-0) in their last ten, but the Rats lost 3-2 at Lowell on Friday night before handing Syracuse a 5-2 defeat on Saturday.
CALGARY (SLGT) -- Budding power forward Ian Schultz (at right) is the Blues' Feature Prospect this week, and leads the "Trending Upward" category with a 3-4-7 scoring line in four games this past week. The 87th overall selection by the Blues in 2008 was also a plus-4 for the week and piled up 12 minutes in penalties. The highlight of his week was a four-point night (2 G, 2 A) at home against Medicine Hat on Dec. 12. Schultz tallied a shorthanded goal at 2:26 of the second period, staking the Hitmen to a 3-0 lead before the Tigers came roaring back with four unanswered goals.
Schultz finally answered the fourth Medicine Hat goal with a power-play marker at 15:51 of the third period, but he could not solve Tigers' netminder Tyler Bunz in the shootout, and Calgary dropped a 6-5 decision at the Saddledome.
REGINA, Sask. (SLGT) -- Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo (4th overall 2008) and goaltender Jake Allen (34th overall 2008) were among the 22 players named to Team Canada for the U20 World Junior Championships commencing on Boxing Day (Dec. 26) in Regina and Saskatoon. This will be the second time each player has represented Canada at the World Juniors; Pietrangelo was named to last year's gold medal-winning U20 squad but saw no action in six games, while Allen backstopped Canada's U18 squad to the gold medal in April 2008 with a 1.43 GAA and 94.8% save percentage.

Thank you!
I’m starting to look forward to this every week. Thank you so much for the work you do keeping us updated with these guys.
I’m glad Toivo seems to have his head together – and I’ve been keeping a wary eye on Max Tardy. I realise it’s going to be a while before we see him in Peoria or the NHL but the dude just intrigues me.

Max is committed to Minnesota-Duluth (WCHA) for next season...
…so we’ll get a chance to see what he can do at the next level. He could stay all four years, or come out early if he’s ready like Johnson, Palushaj, et. al.
Thanks for the comments, too, Doc. I’m doing what I love to do with this stuff.

Good to see Palushaj adjusting to the AHL level.
And Sonne clearly has been better lately. Both are good to see.
A lot of draft sites stated the Blues might have found a steal in Shattock, and his numbers are certainly making that look like a real possibility. Now he needs to keep it up.
What’s been the deal with Barriball? Has he been hurt?
Thanks for doing this, a lot easier to sort then I can do on my own (I always forget to check Bariball and Fast because we got them in trades, for example)
Do you think there’s any chance Lehtera could consider coming back overseas with teh way he’s produced? Curious if he might wanna take another shot.
Man, Junland not only has 22 points, but a +10 too? Impressive.

He’s eligible for a medical redshirt, and can replay his senior year in 2010-11 if he chooses to.

Being from Western Canada, I was kinda wondering whatever happened to Brett Sonne…the guy was pretty good in the WHL, and I was curious as to why he’d never made it to the NHL yet. Very good info on the prospects, by the way, other teams bloggers ought to do the same. I’m also curious about Yan Stastny…is he related to THE Stastny family(s)? Not Peter Statsny’s kid, is he? Paul(of Colorado) his cousin, brother, what? Okay, the reason I’m posting here…can’t say I’m a rabid Blues fan, but they’ve always been in my top three. My Uncle was always good friends with the Red Baron, they played college hockey together I think, so I was always treated to St. Louis Blues stuff for Xmas and birthdays, etc., and so I always had a soft spot for them. I also watched the Gasoff boys play junior here in Medicine Hat, and they were always favorites of mine…yes, Dave Schultz was my favorite player, so that should give you an idea of what kind of player I was myself and what I enjoy most in hockey. My favorite team has always been the Bruins, so the famous photo of Bobby Orr scoring THAT goal always gave me mixed feelings, since I would have liked to see the Blues win a Cup as well. Over the years there have been times I thought MAYBE this year…and I HATE the Oilers and the Flamers, so there have been times I definitely was rooting for the Blues. I also DESPISE the Red Wings, so there you have another reason I like the Blues… Anyhow, my rambling here does have a point…I’ve only been able to catch three or four Blues games on t.v so far this year, and my observations as a sort of objective viewer are as follows…The Blues so-called “star players” seem WAY too frickin’ comfy, play as if they have no fear of being benched or sent down. I was shocked to see the salaries some of them are making, too…guys who’d be third liners on some teams are being paid HOW MUCH???? And their defence…Sydor has been shipped around for a reason, J.D! A couple of their vets give the damn puck away like rookies all the time. And as good as Eric Johnson is, he plays a bit too soft for a guy that size. Andy Murray? Seems like a good coach, but I fear he’s lost this group, and only a major shake-up of some type will wake them up…too bad, but it is the coach who usually pays, isn’t it? The Blues have two very good goalies, but they too seem to be getting fed up with all the giveaways and lacklustre defensive efforts. By the way, I’ve never understood WHY Ty Conklin hasn’t ever been a number one guy…he’s an awesome goalie, and his numbers are always great! Mason is a good goalie, but he’s not having a great season, so why not let Conklin play at least every other game? Maybe that would light a fire under Mason if he thought he MIGHT lose his starter job. And lastly…last year the Blues were a lot of fun to watch during that amazing stretch run…hitting, good effort, etc…but this year? Like watching paint dry some nights, at least the games I saw. They need a couple guys to shake things up, throw some big hits and punch out a few guys. Janssen is a tough kid, but they need more of that stuff, other teams seem to not worry much about most of the Blues players, you know? I just hope they some how can turn it around, they’re still not out of it by any means, but the West is gonna be damn tough to even make the playoffs this year and St.Louis can’t expect another late run to do it again. Start by pounding the Canucks tonight…another team I hate! Trust me, living in Alberta all I hear is how frickin’ great the Flamers and the Oilers are, and I hate them and the Canucks with a passion! So, Go Blues, and get it together! By the way, this site is one of the most entertaining I’ve come across out of all the teams in the league, you guys do a hell of a job and have some hilarious posters, too. sorry mine isn’t funny, I’ll work on that.
Damn it, I send a book-length post but forgot to ask the main question I had!!! Does anyone know who is starting in goal for the Blues tonight? I went a bit off the tracks and chose Rask, Niemi and Conklin as three of my four goalies in my fantasy league. Of course everyone thought I was insane at first, right? Now I look like a genious when Rask and Niemi get to play, and Conklin to a lesser extent as well. I also had Mason for a while, but dropped him recently because his numbers were terrible. It’s always frustrating trying to find out in time who is starting for some teams…they act as if it’s a closely guarded secret. Sometimes just asking on a fan forum like this is the best way to find out, some guys get great inside info, wish I knew HOW!!!!
Great read
as usual, Mr. Department!
Question: What is the status of Sebastian Dahm? I know he just kind of showed up out of nowhere at training camp, and that he’s been our Alaska/Peoria bubble goalie, and yet you don’t list him on your handy dandy stats sheet. So what’s his deal? And, if I may veer off the sheet, how do you see him fitting into our pipeline of young and talented goalies?
Also, I’m hoping to see Lars and his (what I’m assuming is a sad attempt at a) mustache in the STL sometime before the new year (mostly for the mustache, though we all know the locker room could use a bit of a shake-up).
Dahm is under contract to Alaska, I believe...
…not “officially” a member of the Blues’ organization.

He’s doing all right, considering that Alaska isn’t the powerhouse this year that they’ve been in recent years. He did have a decent year with Syracuse (AHL) last year, and is only 22 (birth date Feb. 28, 1987), so time is still on his side. If he starts kicking ass and taking names in Alaska, it’s likely the Blues will offer him a contract. That’s the route that Julian Talbot took to the organization, so there’s a precedent.

Great stuff as always, B.
So if the Peoria team is the hottest thing since fresh-baked garlic bread . . . why can’t we get some of those folks up to the big club soon? We KNOW several of them are NHL-ready, as they’ve been at the level before.
It’s actually kind of a rhetorical question. I’m venting a bit.
One day, David Backes and Albert Pujols will combine forces to become the most awesome piece of violent force known to man.
