A disgrace before the game even started,

referring to those douchebags that booed the Canadian National Anthem.  If this was you, go fuck yourself like a classless Red Wing.  If this wasn't you, but there was someone around you that was doing this...slap them in the face and remind them what class is all about.  I hate...HATE...HAAAAATE the Canucks just as much as anyone, but to do that during a national anthem is downright disgraceful and embarassing.

I was hoping it was an isolated thing, but it seemed to catch on as "O Canada" went on.  This is the last time that should ever happen.

This is on the level of the douchebags that scream out "LETS GO BLUES" in the middle of our own national anthem.  I'm not some super-patriotic psycho or anything, but shut the fuck up for 3 minutes and let both anthems be sung with utmost respect.  We have 3 full periods to scream like lunatics and make a mockery out of our opponents.

Okay, I'm drunk, and extremely upset, but I felt this needed to  be said, and also, there is still 4 games left.  Fuck what the rats jumping off of the ship called USS Bandwagon say!  I'll see you at Game 6!

P.S.  The booing of the opposing jerseys will be on hold for the next game.  Instead, I will go up to each one and ask them why they have an Orca on their jersey:

A.  If they know the answer, I will comence booing them in the face.

B.  If they do not know the answer, I will slap them in the face, then punch them in the balls.  While they are on the ground recovering/wiping their tears, I will teach them a lesson in the history of their shitty team.  After which, see A.

there is some douche bag season ticket holder in 318 that holds the shocker symbol to his chest every time the Canadian national anthem is played. I just want to sock him.

Patel is the wily bastard leading the chorus of boos towards opposing jerseys outside 307 between periods. He’s also never quite sure how much time is left around the 1 minute remaining mark of each period so he’ll ask Tom Calhoun just to be sure.

Anybody who boos another national anthem has no class at all. I couldn’t believe it when I heard it on TV. We’re supposed to be the best sports city in America, and if our fans keep this up, it’s not going to last long.
I wish we’d actually sing along with our anthem, like they do in Canada. You should have pride in your own country, not have to bash another. I mean, if you want to hate another country, hate N.Korea, not Canada.

Booing a national anthem is just plain wrong. That is classless Chicago Stadium stuff. When in the hell did we start taking after Chicago fans.

Like TLMotorsport (see below), I disagree with the shenanigans that happen during our own national anthem. I think it is also classless Chicago Stadium stuff.

Thanks, k10patel for starting this thread. As the friend I was at the game with said, “Don’t those idiots realize by booing that they’re insulting about half of the Blues?” See below — 3/4 of the officials are Canadian as well …

On a side note since we’re bitching about anthem stuff, I think America the Beautiful should be our national anthem. The Star Spangled Banner is a great poem, but come on its set to a Brittish drinking song :P

I mentioned this first in the gametime thread

I hate when people don’t respect other traditions or each other.

I’m the type of fan that will agnolige a great play by an opposing player and I expect my sons to do the same. They hear me cheering players on their opposition soccer and little league teams when they make a good play.

It’s not about sports, it’s about sportsmanship.

by luvhockey on Apr 20, 2009 7:32 AM CDT reply actions

It's just like at Cardinals games.

If somebody on the other team makes a great diving play, we’re smart enough to applaud them. Not full out cheer for them, but at least acknowledge the effort.

by WebUKid on Apr 20, 2009 8:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly.

I learned from being a kid at Cards games that you never boo the opposing team (unless they pull a douche move against your guys, and aside from a bean ball in baseball that’s next to impossible – but I will NOT boo the announcement of the opposition’s line-up), acknowledge great plays, and just be polite and enjoy the game. I was at the game last year when Ovy scored his 60th goal, and I think I was the only one who clapped.

Of course, taking things into consideration, I was probably the only one who knew.

Anyway, booing the Canadian anthem is REALLY disrespectful. I got onto a few people for doing it at Philips, and they were like “Yeah, well, it’s Canada – what’s it matter?” I had to explain that half of the players are from there, it’s just common courtesy, and then reminded their redneck selves that they’d get pissed if someone booed during ours. It was sad (but kinda cool) to hear everyone singing the Canadian anthem when the Sens were here, and no one even tried to sing ours.

When it comes to national pride, at least Canadians don’t take it for granted, I guess.

Actually, during one of the Hawks-Flames games I was amazed at how the TSN feed (re-fed over Versus) and Chicago’s local feed had totally different crowd levels. I kept flipping back and forth: Here it sounds like there’s a fight, here it sounds like someone’s bleeding.

Audio differences may have also been due to my dubious cable provider, thank you Charter.

and you know the assholes who boo the Canadian anthem are the same ones who yell things like “SHOOT IT!” at happy meal when ohlund is sprawled on the ice two feet in front of him. hey, anthem-booing dicks: lesson one — class. lesson two — hockey.

The only reason I am ok with Chicago doing it

is because it started during the 1st Gulf War as a show of Patriotism. They’ve never stopped doing it since then. Granted, a significant portion of their fans probably have no idea WHY they do it, but it was still cool the first time it happened.

I can understand the cheering since the anthem and flag represent the best country on earth.

But I find myself thinking of buddies who were laid to rest under that flag. I usually do my best to not start bawling.

Dum spiramus tuebimur

by spectr17 on Apr 20, 2009 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

It started long before Gulf War I

The Chicago tradition actually started well before 1991, and it wasn’t a show of patriotism - but that All-Star game moment was its best-known example. It began mid’80s, during a series against the Oilers I believe, when the Hawks came home behind the 8-ball and the crowd rallied them.

That said, I don’t have a problem with it. It’s unique. It’s a celebration. It’s mostly sports-fueled, for sure, but it can easily be channeled into patriotism or whatever sentiment one wants to feel. Considering how many singers have butchered the anthem and how many times fans abuse it by inserting their team name or whatever, I’d say Chicago’s roar isn’t half-bad.

Normally the people doing it are the same morons that real fans watch hop on and off the bandwagon every year. It’s a small percentage , and by large Blues fans have been pretty classy (you must be far enough away from Detroit).

I’d be really surprised to hear it the next game, but if it does, this forum alone shows where the attitude of thr real fans is at.

I pray that if it comes back to Vancouver, which any hockey fan fan expected it to all along, you won’t here the same thing here. If I do, I will personally slap the bandwagon jumping retard upside their head.

But I really don’t care for anthems at the beginning of sporting events. It shouldn’t take a mandatory anthem before a game to get people to acknowledge that they live in a free country.

I really don’t like O Canada to begin with… I’ll make fun of it, sure, but booing it is classless and lame. Remember Canada isn’t a real country anyway.

It's kinda like how we yell out "Knight!" during our anthem.

Leave it up to Atlanta’s old school hockey fans to cling to a defunct IHL team for 13 years after it died. The people started it in ’99 when folks still almost remembered them, but now everyone just screams it because everyone else does.

They have some sort of hockey history in Atlanta, but leave it up to the rednecks to just do it because it’s fun.

And thanks to all the fans who respect the game on here, wish more people like sports announcers and the likes could read this stuff. There really are some educated people who watch and care about hockey!
