Kronwall's Hit On Havlat
For those of you who aren't watching the Wings/Hawks series (we don't blame you, we've watched very little of it too) here's the 'controversial' hit that Niklas Kronwall put on Martin Havlat. Kronwall was given a five minute major and a game misconduct while Havlat missed the rest of the game (unsurprising since he was essentially snoring on the ice with his eyes open).
From a purely objective standpoint, which for once we can claim because we don't like either team, this looks like a clean hit. The Hawks failed to capitalize on the five minute major, but the loss of Havlat seemed to shake them for the rest of the period. He'll be evaluated today to determine if he can skate in game four tomorrow.
Take a look at the video; what do you think?

Charging and attempt to injure...
How the officials called it “interference” is beyond me! If Havlat had been moving, rather than standing still along the boards, then maybe it’s a clean hit; but the match penalty was the right call as it was.

I disagree
I think it was clean. Havlat was still moving. His feet were still, but he was still gliding on the ice. I could see a MAYBE two minute charge call, but not a game misconduct. Havlat should know you always have to have your head up when you’re on the ice.
Interference however, no way. The puck was right in his skates. I just don’t understand how a penalty was called when play continued and no officials had arms up. Last I knew you can’t decide you’re going to call a penalty after the actual offense happens. Is it just me or do these playoffs seem like the officiating has been rubbish this year?

Terrible call
I agree with Tiger, 2 min charge at the most. He can’t help it if Havlat decided to put his head down and didn’t see it coming. Hell he even hit him from the front/side, not back.
As for the officiating, I hope the quality of refs is addressed during the offseason. After the fact calls, diving, and just general shittiness of the officials has been on display and some consistency needs to happen soon. This is the fucking NHL, the officials should be better than they are. I would also like to see tighter games called in the playoffs. I know that they usually let people play during the playoffs, but I think some of the non calls are leading to some of the cheap shots we are seeing later in the games.
Hatred Walking
How was that interference?
He had the puck – not on his stick, but I would still consider that having the puck. He didn’t leave his feet on the hit (which I’ve seen other people do scads of times coughOVIEcough and not get called for it)… I’m not sure how this is a 5 min. He didn’t even elbow, he led with his shoulder.
I guess people are paranoid b/c Havlat’s made of glass. If I were Kronwall, I wouldn’t be to concerned. Gleason got a $2500 fine for his blatant cross check to Letang’s face, so Kronwall’ll probably just have to hand over some lunch money too. Forget the officiating sucking, the general discipline sucks.

Sorry, that should have been Bayda, not Gleason.

He didn’t leave his feet on the hit…
Uh, sorry, my dear… but Kronwall absolutely left his feet on the hit. Watch the video again.
And I love the shot of Franzenstein in the box throwing a hissy fit over the call. What a d-bag…

Ok, after I re-watched it again.
He left his feet a tad. After watching Ovie literally launch himself at people all season long, I admit that my classification for “leaving his feet” has been skewed slightly. It does appear that he left his feet more at the point of, or slightly after impact than he did leading into the hit itself, though.
I agree with you about Franzen – because screaming and dropping Fbombs at the ref always gets you on their good side.

Actually...
I think he left his feet as a result of the hit. This shit is happening so fast and there is an anticipation and a reaction to the contact that I think it’s crazy to look at this zapruder film and say he intentionally left his feet to lay on the hit.
I feel greasy defending a Red Wing for any reason, but really it’s hard to say that this isn’t a clean hit. If Havlat touches the puck in any way there’s no discussion here. Did he intend to touch that puck? I bet so. It’s a physical game and on a play like that Havlat touches the puck and it’s a ‘Hit of the Week!’ 99 times out of 100. How far different is this from the Umberger planting a couple years ago? Maybe a part of a second?
If intent to blow the whistle is kosher,
then intent to touch the puck needs to be too.

to quote the commentator on the video: “you can argue that the puck wasn’t there”
while it may have been right by him, Havlat never touched it, so I think it was the right call.
the 5 minute major was also the right call. Havlat’s head was down, so the checker should avoid the head and go for the shoulder. this is the same type of thing that pissed me the fuck off when Scott Shithead Stevens hit Eric Lindros (yeah, I’m a Flyers fan) all those years ago. he (like Kornhole Kronwall) planned a shoulder-to-face hit. that’s attempt to injure, and a sureshot to be a concussion. the league needs to make an examle of Kornhole Kronwall so that no one else tries to do the same shit.
oh, and don’t argue that it couldn’t be avoided, you should have just enough time to adjust the direction of the hit. you all remember Nick Kypreos falling 90 degrees in the wrong direction of the momentum to land on Grant Fuhr, injuring him…
of course with everybody dick-riding on Detroit, you KNOW if it would’ve happened to one of them, it would’ve been a 10 minute major as opposed to just 5.
just have to throw this doozy from a recent post’s comments:
You would really root for Anaheim versus Detroit? Anaheim is the dark side of hockey. It took teams like the Canadiens, Oilers, and Red Wings to restore skill to the sport and save it from becoming Ultimate Fighting on Ice. But you would pull for the dirtiest player in hockey and the Young Goon Squad? As you know, I grew up in Detroit, so I am a Wing fan. But even if I hadn’t, I would still at least respect the Red Wing franchise for their style of play.

pffft. they’re just as bad as the rest. proof’s right here.

I say piss on it, suspend 'em both...
…just for playing for douchebag teams.

Who gives a shit.
They’re both assholes.
Used to be Aaron, but some douchebag Celtics fan has that one already.
I saw an elbow to the head.
Then again, Havlat had his head down. An interesting dichotomy.
Doesn’t matter . . . 17 hours later, Havlat STILL hasn’t touched the puck. So that’s definitely interference.
Factoring in the elbow . . . a five minute major and a game misconduct shouldn’t be enough, but Colin Campbell would be run out of the league office if he suspended Kronwall.
All told . . . Fuck Detroit.

clean, i say
douchebag 1’s feet didn’t come off the ground until AFTER shoulder-face impact with douchebag 2 if you watch the video in frames. his feet coming off was probably him keeping his balance.
clean hit, but dirty because theyre both cocksucking blackwing redhawk pieces of shit. still rooting for the meteor in this one.

Not a clean play but...
I see a double minor for the elbow, but no game misconduct. Havlat had his head down.
it's dirty and clean hit at the same time.

Clean hit
Ditto the keep your head up. Why can’t we have crushing hits anymore without fans and other players crying foul? It seems like too long ago teams traded crushing hits which just drove the crowd and TV fans wild. Now they just scream for a penalty and suspension. WTF happened to my rough and tumble NHL?
No way you call interference on that. If you do then players will start avoiding touching the puck to draw phantom interference calls. You think the diving and turning the back on the boards is bad, calling this solid hit interference would open the doors to flag hockey. The day the NHL does that is the last day I watch this game and I fear that day is not long off.
