2009 NHL Draft: Blues and the Picks

Myself and a couple other Blues fans have been working on a fan based blog (partly inspired by GT) and one of our guys put up a ton of info on who the players are. I know there are projections and trends and all that stuff out there...but this is more of what a fan needs to know about the players we're possibly taking.

St. Louis Blues 2009 NHL Draft Preview & Player Information

Please take a couple minutes to check it out. Thanks.

Mr. Department . . .

your thoughts?

(Personally, I long for Son Of Chicken Parm . . . but that’s just me)

The guy who wrote the analysis is a pretty respected poster at "Hockey's Future"...

…and I think he’s done a very good job of breaking down the guys he analyzed.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that the Blues’ first-round pick will be one of those players, but that’s a pretty big net that he’s cast. I narrowed the choices down somewhat in my analysis, and a few of the guys he highlights — Budish and Holland, especially — just missed getting on my “Silver Seven.”

Budish, BTW, is a guy I’d take in a second if I had confidence that he’s completely recovered from surgery, and that his game hasn;t suffered from missing a year of development. He did perform impressively at the Combine, from all accounts, and if he should fall to the second round, I would definitely look into trying to acquire a higher second-round pick to snag him up..

Budish wrecked his knee playing football.

That wins points for me! He was playing another MAN’S SPORT!!!!!

He’s also massive for a winger . . . and could potentially be bigger than Backes or Walt when his body fills out (hopefully without the aid of donuts and cheeseburgers) . . .

So yeah, it’d be totally awesome to see this guy fall to the 2nd round and we got him, methinks.

In the first round, Id rather take a defensemen. If anyone has gotten to see Puck Prospectus (run by the baseball prospectus folks) they showed that defensemen who are taken in the firs round end up as better performing players by a large margin over the next 3-4 rounds combined.

That said if some of the bigger forwards are there, its hard to pass them up. Blues really only have one Power Foward in teh whole organization and thats Backes. It’d be nice to get Holland, Kassian, Kreider, or Ashton (who is big), I would be alright w/ Glennie too.

Cant win consistantly scoring 1 goal a game !!!

Many times last season Blues had to try and win with a 1 goal a game offense. This led to the goaltending and defense being spent by the time the playoffs came. The Blues need to draft GOAL SCORING FORWARDS or it will be L4 and out again next season if they even make the playoffs. With the return of Johnson and Pietrangelo the defense will get better automatically. Jackman will be able to play the stay at home game and wont have to play Bobbie Orr / Chris Pronger. Blues fan for 43.
