Hangin' with Mr Mason ...

So, I noticed in this morning's links that Chris Mason was going to be on Chris Kerber's radio show. Following the link, it mentioned that they were broadcasting from the Downtown Sheraton's sports bar, and that fans were invited. There would also be prizes given away. It was just starting, and I was on Metrolink on my way home. So I figured, heck, why not?

So, I dropped in about half an hour into the show. It was cool hearing Chris talk about the upcoming season and the position of goaltender. It was a small crowd, and there were the usual folks looking for autographs from Chris. I talked to him a little bit, and then moved on. I started talking to another guy there who seemed to be with the Blues website. He was trying to gank some wifi so that he could update the website with what was happening with the Traverse City tournament. After the signings were done with, Chris Mason came over to check up on the score (we were up 3-1 at that point). He was really interested with how the boys were doing, and we talked a little while longer.

Things I learned:

Chris Mason was not familiar with GameTime, neither the paper version or the website. But he made a note of it, and said he'd look into it.

The locker room DJ is apparently Jay McClement. What Mason described was that the same playlist is used to set the mood for about the last half hour or so before the game. He said we could probably get that and mentioned some dude's name (the Blues website guy at a nearby table was laughing at that, and said that Taylor Swift kept getting played when the TV cameras were on last year). I'm going to look into that.

He really liked the look of Khabibulin's new mask for Edmonton. Someone else had asked about his own, and I mentioned that Puck Daddy had Bulin's. The web dude pulled it up, and he really liked it. He said that Bishop got a custom one made for this year. It has a brick wall across the front, and there are gargoyles on either side - one wearing a Blues jersey, and the other wearing a Peoria one.

He really liked Jake Allen, said that not only was he a good goaltender, but a good kid as well. Really seemed to be impressed with him overall. When I talked about the whole "NHL experience, but on the bench VS the getting starts, but in the minors" argument, he was quick to answer "Get the starts."

I asked him if he'd had a chance to talk to Ty Conklin, and if Ty had any impressions about the team yet. Mason said that he'd called him to welcome him to the team, and talked up the great guys in the locker room. Ty sounded really excited to be playing here, and with this group of players.

Well ... that's all I can recall. There's no killer scoops there, but it was fun, and good to be talking about hockey in the present tense again. One week from tonight will be the first preseason game!!!!
