Attention Brewer Haters
I know there are an awful lot of Blues fans who don't much care for Brewbot. These are the same people who are quick to jump on him for even the slightest thing he does wrong. Well, I think it should go both ways.
Brewer has played with a bit of an edge so far this year (21PIM after just 6 games; he had 46PIM in 59gms last year), he has played physical, he has stuck up for his teammates, and he is a +4 on the young season (2nd best on the team). Night after night people are ripping on him, and yet this guy, after each home game this year, goes to center ice and salutes you.
Moral of the story:
Don't be such fucking d-bags.
If you're going to jump all over him for bad play, at least be fair and jump all over him for good play. Give the guy a break and recognize his good start. Positive reinforcement goes a long way.
And as always, keep the hope and
LET'S GO BLUES!

I admit it..
steps into confessional
I used to be a brewbot hater. Yep, I used to yell “Brewer, you still suck” at him every other game when he 1st arrived and until mid to late last year.
I hated him because he played bad more than good, he got paid to do so (ya, I know not his fault, management is at fault for that) he was OFTEN beat and looked bad out there. Yep I now know it was because he was injured. I was still mad at him for making our (my) team suck.
I knew when he got here he was no pronger. I didn’t expect him to replace pronger. I expected him to be a 2nd, 3rd or 4th line D man who knew how to play. My anger was NOT based on the fact that he wasn’t pronger. or that we traded pronger for him or any other player. I hated him because he played extremely poorly all the time.
Starting about mid season last year, perhaps with the arrival of the new coach, he started playing MUCH better. I didn’t even feel a need to yell anymore. Yes he made mistakes from time to time, but his play was more good than bad, and that was all I ever expected of him.
As captain, he has finally started showing his leadership. Not only sticking up for teammates, but his interaction with players and refs were clearly more visible and full of leadership.
I have been EXTREMELY impressed with his play this season. Of course, VERY few other people will come out and say that he has played well. My section still yells at him (not as often I have noticed). But there area few like me who finally appreciate his play.
When he went after Vorros in the ANA game, I gave him a standing O. There were MANY around me that also did so.
I sure hope he continues to play like this. I know it is his contract year, so I expect he will. I just hope the blues don’t overpay him if they resign him. Yep, I wouldn’t mind him being back for half as much if he continues to play like this.
I hope you will forgive me for my past behavior towards the brewbot. As he certainly doesn’t deserve my wrath anymore.
Stepping out of the confessional now
WOW, I feel better. Thanks for reading, sorry it wasn’t as eloquently written as most SLGT posts. I was just “spitting it out.” (TWSS).

i feel like you and i are at the exact same point on the road to Brewcovery.

Ran into the owner...
I ran into Dave Checketts in the lower level at the Chicago game and we actually talked a little bit. I mentioned that the entire team was playing better and especially Brewer and he said that he is finally fully healthy. If this is the case then I am not a Brewer hater anymore. He has looked like a shutdown defender out there and I have not seen him make any huge mistakes like he did in the past. Lets hope he stays healthy all year and leaves the team on a good note.
I think it helps tremendously...
… that Brewer doesn’t have to be a first-pairing guy anymore. With the acquisition of Colaiacovo, and the development of Polak and Johnson and now Pietrangelo, Brewer isn’t getting “all the tough assignments” that Andy Murray used to stick him with. He averaged 25 minutes of ice time two years ago; so far this year, he’s at 20.
One of the things that fans really used to bitch about was Brewer’s efforts on the power play. He’s played less than two minutes – total – on the PP through the first seven games. He’s always been a minus skater; so far this year, he’s at +4.
Maybe he really is fully healthy. Maybe ContractYear 2.0 is a hell of a program. Maybe he’s just better with a defensive d-man (Polak) than he was with a guy more prone to jump into the play (EJ). Regardless of the reason, his first 7 games this year have been a welcome change of pace for #4. Hell, he’s even been defending his teammates. The “Captain Flatline” moniker is officially shelved.
Brewerbot 2.0
It only took years of developing and the end of a contract to produce a robot who cares the slightest bit about the players around him. I am loving seeing him standing up to other players. Admittedly, I am still quick to notice when he does something awful, but hell, I do the same for Winchester. In my opinion, Brewer has done well enough to be re-signed for maybe a mil, but Winchester is the new Brewer. Guy can’t fight, guy can’t power-forward, and the guy is usless in almost every other situation. Brewer can be my new Weaver if for God’s sake, we send the Windpipe down to Peoria for them to “make the playoffs with some talent”. I have tried extra hard this year to like (tolerate Brewer) as a 3rd liner on D. However, I noticed his and Pietr’s ice time in the Pitts game, all I have to say is well done. I am going to remain positive in order to give the Blues some good Kharma. I just want to see us win, and the Blues need the Bot (who is going to play no matter what) to perform as well as any machine in the game. Let’s Go Blues!
Good Post
I have never understood the Brewer-hating in this town. It is obvious that he has been hampered by injuries the past couple years. I mean, the guy’s back problem left him with a weak leg, and with decreased ability to feel in his lower body, and many people would be wondering how they could get Social-Security disability if they had those problems. But this guy is a hockey player, so he battled back and returned to the lineup way ahead of projections.
Why is it that, whenever any Blues’ player is asked about Brewer, they never waver, and always say he is a great captain? You would think that if there was some discord in the ranks, behind the scenes, that it would get out into the media. All of the players the Brewer-haters love: Backes, Jackman, Oshie, etc: all of them….they all say Brewer is their captain, and a good one. The news media and most fans hate Brewer as captain, but the players feel the opposite….so who has more cred?
I would agree that Brewer is disappointing in some respects, especially in terms of his offensive contributions. But what Blues’ defenseman since Steve Duchesne, Al, and Pronger has really been an offensive force? Alexander Khavanov had skills, but Jeffio and GameNight/GameTime hated him, too. Even now, we are waiting for EJ to step up, and are excited about Petro’s start, but the Blues have been lacking a true offensive defenseman for years. I thought Brewer was going to be better in that respect.
Still, if any Blues’ fan thinks Brewer is a problem for this team, then you are on thin ice with the other players, and you are blind to reality. If it is true that he is finally healthy, then that is good news for our team.
Brewbot is playing a lot better this year
I like his snarl and sticking up for other teammates.
He did seem to find banana peels almost every game the last 2 years.

Just a chew toy for the hockey gods
Dude
is finally healthy. When you look at what he’s gone through off the ice – not even being able to pick up his kids at one point – then he was bound to be a bit “tentative” when he did come back. How much was that back problem impeding his movement?
Now, however, he’s had a full summer of being able to train (the first time in like forever), the fact that management made a point of him retaining the C must have given him some confidence too – not to mention the players backing him in the media.
I’ve been wishing for him to have a healthy period – the guy wasn’t an Olympian and All-Star for nothing – he’s finally being able to show what he can do.
Another thing. When Brewer was recovering from his back op and subsequent nerve “healing”, he could have stayed at home…recuperated that way. He didn’t. He continued to go on road trips with the team even though there was absolutely no chance of him playing. I think that shows a little something there.

I hadn’t heard or remember him going on the road trips… but I still want to know why he didn’t go to Sweden last year.
He played only 3 weeks from when they were there. I can’t imagine he wasn’t healthy enough to travel.
I realize this may be ass backwards from my comment way above, but it is those little things that create the perception.

Me, I don't hate nobody in a Bluenote...
…Brewer and Jackman are “stay-at-home” D-men; that’s what they do. Brewer is healthy for the first time in years, and is much more mobile because of it; at least, from my vantage point from Jonesboro Freakin’ Arkansas (Thank You, Thank You, NHL GameCenter Live!)
I fully intend to make a pilgrimage to Mecca (er, uh, the DrinkScotch Center… I’m Catholic, not a follower of The Prophet!) sometime this season. I’ll root my tuchis off for anybody and everybody wearing the Note… you’ll recognize me as a plump, bearded fellow wearing the Blues’ “third” jersey with my own name and number (#1, of course) on the back.

Brewer is not a Stay at Home D
Don’t agree that Brew is a Stay at Home limited guy. The biggest disappointment in him is that he has not been better offensively. If he is indeed healthy, then it will show this season, on both ends of the ice.
Look up his career stats.
He has never scored more than 29 points, even back when he was in Edmonton. Anyone who thought we were trading for an offensive defenseman was wrong.
Yes, but...
At the time, he was still young, and he had the Canadian-Olympic pedigree. He had some offensive skill potential. Obviously, not a Paul Coffey. But I think the Blues felt he could develop into a fourty or fifty point guy, which in this era is pretty good production from the backline.
…a forty or fifty point guy, which in this era is pretty good production from the backline.
40-50 points is good production from a defenseman in any era.
If Brewer chips in 25-30 points, and keeps playing as well as he has been, that’s really all we can expect out of him, I think.

i'll hate on him
let me note this though:
i have said nothign bad about him anywher this season. ANYWHERE. and i’m never for going to the rink just to boo someone in the note, and not only have i not bitched about brewer i have bloody well defended him already multiple times (most notible a 3 game losign streak lead, elsewhere to a FIRE PAYNE COS HE GIVES BREWER ICE TIME discussion.. omg i mean seriously OMG.)
1) if this is the first time brewer has been healthy, the guy is a sorry human, i mean he is what 33ish? needs better docotrs. oh you mean in his 10 year hockey career? hmmm good thing we gave him 3 contracts here then, and already, with the blues in 4th place in the central and brewer playing 6 games the way he should have played ALLLLL 689 of his games peeps here (and probably the team) want to reup him this weekend to a 5 year 30 million deal.
i, and i do not speak for all brewer haters, but IIIIIIIII hate the guy for consistitanly being rewarded by the blues for a subpar body of work. end of story.
it is the REWARDING FAILURE that annoys the hell out of the brewer in the loo situation. it is the oh, andy murray is in town and eric bucks up for 20 games, let’s give the guy a raise!!, its the the blues traded prronger for him and i know he sucked hard and long his first year here but we be scared of the free agent market, lets give the guy a raiiiiise!!!!
siiigh. I hope eric plays well. i hope he captains a cup team. this year would be nice. but i am neither convinced that 5 games are enough or a whole CONTRACT year of play is even going to convince me he is worth those 3 NONCONTRACT years it will take to resign him
we have all kinds of names for players who are injured for 3 years. xplody bones. demitra got the nickname glass for a time even though he had injiury plaged seasons like twice and remains an elite blues career producer. and we have worse names for people who won’t play in non contract years.
so if your bitching at me for bitching at brewer.
1) i haven’t done so when he hasnt deserved it. period
2) rewarding him for 2 weeks of effort is why i hated him to START WITH
3) no one here loves the injured guy. so why the “brewer issue” magically means brewer isn’t suppossed to get crap for mysterious longterm injuries and documented in-season breakages he played through i’m not sure.
now i know haters gotta hate, so go ahead and start below. hate with all that hater crap that doesnt apply but makes you feel better, like i’m mad at him for pronger leaving (not- actually i’ll talk at LENGTH about how i feel that was lp’s greatest trade here)). i dont watch him play (bull) i dont understand defensive d-man (Bahahahahah) injuries are free rides (yeah, i gotz a bridge ta sell ya), brewer’s magical shot term great play near contracts is nothing to be concerned about (lets reup him NOOOOOOOWWWWWW kovy length!!!!!)
I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth ... while there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.

while i don't agree with everything you said
i will defend to the death your right to say it.
I will however say this:
I am not in favor of resigning him. That being said, I hope he has a career year. I hope he does everything right. I hope this guy wins the Norris Trophy this year. I hope Blues fans everywhere give this guy all the support in the world. Why?
2 words.
Trade Bait. The better year he has, the better chance the Blues have of moving him for a much needed piece of scoring.
jackman is not impressed.

I hope that he has a career year too, but the Blues will never trade him. They’ve defended him up and down as the captain and he’ll be here at least this year. I wouldn’t care if we resigned him to what he’s actually worth and kept him in a role like he’s in now. He was never supposed to be an equal trade for Pronger and they are FINALLY starting to play him like that.

Solid work.
I am a well-noted BrewBot antagonist. But I can admit when the guy’s playing well . . . and guess what? He’s not playing bad at all.
St. Louis Game Time . . . I need another beer.
And I can also write things in 140 characters or fewer.
