Prospect Sunday header

By Brian Weidler, "Game Time" Prospect Department

Welcome to the first "new-look" Game Time Prospect Sunday of the 2010-11 season.

FEATURED PROSPECT OF THE WEEK:

The featured prospect this week is goaltender Ben Bishop, drafted by the Blues in 2005 (3rd round, 85th overall). The tallest goaltender ever to appear in an NHL game at 6' 7, Bishop joined the Peoria Rivermen at the tail end of the 2007-08 season following a solid three-year career with the University of Maine Black Bears of Hockey East.

Bishop has been biding his time in Peoria for the last two-plus seasons, putting together a 40-36-6 record with a 2.76 GAA and 90.0% save percentage in the AHL. This year, Bishop has come to camp ready to show that his time has come; in two pre-season appearances for the Blues, Bishop allowed a total of one goal and stopped 53 of 54 shots in road wins at Minnesota (5-1, Sep. 22) and Colorado (2-0, Sep. 26).

Here's a brief look at Bishop on Day Two of training camp, demonstrating the effortlessness with which he can virtually eliminate the shooter's options thanks to his size and suprising quickness.

RIVERMEN END PRE-SEASON WITH WIN:

Bishop has been reassigned to Peoria to start the 2010-11 season, and took the demotion in stride by leading the Rivermen to their first win of the exhibition season on Saturday night in Peoria.

Bishop allowed two goals on 23 shots for a 91.3% save percentage, and backstopped the Rivermen to a 5-2 win over their rivals from two hours north on Interstate 39, the Rockford IceHogs.

Tryout players Zach Pearson (RW, 5'10, 185), Ethan Cox (C, 5'10, 175) and Chris Morehouse (C, 5-09, 180) tallied goals for the Rivermen in the first period, while drafted prospects Tyler Shattock and Brett Sonne tallied for the home team in the second and third periods, respectively.

The Rivermen, under new head coach Jared Bednar, open the 2010-11 AHL season with the Manitoba Moose at Carver Arena on Friday, Oct. 8. Game time in downtown P-Town is 7:05 PM.

After the jump, this week's Fab Five or players in the organization who are "Trending Up."

two things

1) what b up with the ahl’s inability to support their leagues preseason happening. horrid to get a roster much less a good set of stats. yea i know MOST of the “real” ahl players are in the nhl at the time, but if that is the entire reason, why play em at all. match the ahl with the echl (for whatever teams are not already matched have echl and nhl preseason adn ahl can go down to the bar and drink

2)bishop’s stats, ande the blues consistant wavering on bishops personal coach up there had indicated a slowness on his part seen by the blues other great nexst goalie, schwartz. he looks different so far this PREseason. what should he do to let fans know he is ready and nhl calibre this season in peoria? and is he still considered jake allen’s underling on the furthest looking depth charts?

Last season

It seemed like Bishop was slowly sliding backwards in the organization. Not quite what he was predicted to be. I really hope he has a great season.

Loving Jani’s plus 6 in 4 games. What’s his age and status? He’s across the pond eh?

Also liking the new Prospect Sunday banner—nice
