The St. Louis Blues have sent defenseman Ian Cole and forward Nicholas Drazenovic to Peoria of the American Hockey League, trimming their NHL roster to 23 players.

The Blues’ roster will be at 21 after the team formally places forward Vladimir Sobotka (shoulder) and defenseman Nikita Nikitin (broken wrist) on injured reserve.

In sending Cole to Peoria, the Blues have elected to keep defensemen Alex Pietrangelo and Tyson Strachan on the NHL roster.

While Pietrangelo was elated by the development, Cole was disappointed to hear the news after practice, but said he would use the move as motivation.

He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.
Just because Jay McClement is the best defensive forward in the NHL doesn't mean he should win the Selke.

hard cheese

support your top guy or reward effort and results? blues couldn’t do both i don’t think, in picking a 6th d-man. and again if pietro is a 7th d-man this makes no sense at all

I think Strachan was destined to stay up this year just because he was the only one of the four(not counting oystrick) who we could stick as the 7th D-man. Pie, Cole, Nikit all need play time for development, I don’t think they are worried about that with strach.

Panger twitter – Great attitude from Ian Cole as he gets sent down. Knows he needs to play lots and develop the right way. Was still surprised, understands

Agreed... like Cole's attitude, and I think he's gonna be a monster in P-Town this year...

Pretty unsurprising for everyone other than Cole. Strachan has been up and Pietrangelo was fighting with Nikitin for that spot.

Roster time!
Forwards
Perron-Backes-Boyes
Berglund-McDonald-Oshie
Steen-McClement-Crombeen
Winchester-D’Ags-Janssen
*Sobotka(IR)

Defenders
Brewer-Johnson
Jackman-Polak
Colaiacovo-Pietrangelo
*Nikitin(IR) – Strachan

Goaltenders
Halak
Conklin

- – - – - – - – - – - – -

Colaiacovo will man the 3rd pairing’s left, Pietrangelo and Strachan trade off on the right and sub for any injuries. D’Ags mans the 4th line center position until Sobotka is cleared, and will probably find himself in the line-up a lot more frequently this season. Would be nice to turn 4th line into an actual scoring threat.

Will be interesting to see how the top-two lines turn out. The Blues seem keen on using the Pabst-Blue-Boyes line (sorry, I was up to my knees in hipsters over the weekend), but they could easily turn into:

Perron-McDonald-Backes
Oshie-Berglund-Boyes

Lots of flexibility to these lines. Should give Payne a lot to work with during the season. Gonna be good, especially with Halak as our new ACTUAL STARTING GOALTENDER and Conklin as the league’s best (and most likeable) backup goaltender.

This season is going to be exciting.

Since you brought up Pabst, I just thought I'd mention

my friends and I have taken to calling PBRs “Tobys,” seeing as it’s the most American beer available anymore – much like Toby Keith is the most American American.

Drink it, ya’ asshole!

Oh, and that lineup looks good too.

Can’t wait for Saturday!

Is Colaiacovo healthy?

I thought he was hurt.

Toby Keith? Really? That neck couldn’t be any redder if he was painted with ketchup… :-D

From what I've heard, anyway

BND reports that Colaiacovo was practicing earlier today, and that the Blues expect him to be ready for the season. Others are reporting that Pietrangelo will dress and Strachan will be a healthy scratch for the opener, so I’m going to go with him starting this Saturday.

This week needs to go by faster.

Porter stays up, then...

He’s gotten a cup of coffee with the Blues before, last year or the year before, i think.

I like that move, as Porter’s GOT to have more game than Winchester… although I’m disappointed for Drazenovic, whom I thought had shown well this preseason despite going pointless.

I'm surprised the Blues will (apparently) roll with a 21-man roster.

I would have expected Cole and Drazenovic to stay in St. Louis until Sobotka and Colaiacovo were healthy.

Maybe Cola will be ready to go this weekend. Maybe Payne will use that big empty press box to motivate the rest of the team.

This went about as planned.

Cole staying up was not a sure thing, but it wouldn’t have been a shock. Petro almost had to make the squad.

St. Louis Game Time . . . I need another beer.
And I can also write things in 140 characters or fewer.
