Working as a radio man with CCT (Combat Controllers) in the service I got to see a few gooduns up close. Most epic on was unintentional on our part. Our team parachuted into an air show here in SoCal one year and I was working the DZ that day to help gather up the chutes before the SR-71 (Habu) did his take-off. We were told we’d have enough time to get our chutes and get off the active runway. We’d no sooner picked up one chute when I saw Habu, who was holding in takeoff position, release his brakes and start his roll. FUCK! We all dropped our shit and dove in the ditch and plugged our ears. Habu rotated off the runway right before us and then went vertical with full burners right over the top of us. It was like staring into a blast furnace during an earthquake. I could feel my innards jiggling from the roar of the engines and the heat was intense. A come to Jesus moment for everyone.

We later searched out that cocksucker pilot at the VIP cocktail party that night. at he O-Club He laughed and said he thought we’d enjoy the fun. It took a couple officers nearby a few minutes to convince us not to dangle that SOB off the balcony head first.
