Thursday links: Hockey returns edition
These long delays are brutal. I can't wait to watch some hockey tonight.
Blues news
- The Blues, who have been crazy good at home this year, host the Sharks tonight. [CBS Sports]
- The one place the Blues can afford injuries is on the blue line, in theory at least. Without Carlo Colaiacovo and Roman Polak, the Blues are going to put that to the test. [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]
- Erik Johnson was injured at practice on Wednesday, but the official word is that he's OK. [BND]
- Scott Mellanby has been working with David Perron and Patrik Berglund. Oddly enough, those two have been playing pretty damn good lately. [Blues]
- Jeremy Rutherford will be chatting at 1 p.m. today. [JR Live]
Power Rankings from John
Reader John went scouring the internets for hockey power rankings.
- Fox Sports, led by the second-creepiest mugshot this side of Dan Caesar, has the Blues at No. 1. [Fox Sports]
- Sports Illustrated pegs the Blues as the No. 3 team in the league. [Sports Illustrated]
- TSN has the Blues at No. 3. Somehow they dropped a spot, despite not losing a game. [TSN]
- Yahoo!, for some reason, thinks the 7-4-0 Capitals are better than the 6-1-2 Blues. See—this is why I hate power rankings. They are arbitrary and pointless, yet they still piss me off. [Yahoo!]
Hockey news
- John Carlson, the hero of the US Junior team, is dealing with expectations and reality. [Japers' Rink]
- The Flames may be trading Jarome Iginla. Put him with some good players, and not Olli Jokinen, and I bet his production soars. [From the Rink]
- Brenden Morrow is having a fine season for the Stars. [Defending Big D]
- Ed Jovanovski scored a hat trick, the first in his 15-year career. [TSN]
- Sidney Crosby drops the gloves and throws some bombs. [Puck Daddy]

Lots of shots
Both teams put some major SOG so this should be a very exciting game. Go Blues!
enough of these long breaks....
Thank God there is a game on tonight. The Hawks have played SIX more games than us….SIX! In order for the Blues to equal the Hawks in the standings, they’d have to go 0-5-1 with those games in hand….yet the Hawks are still top 10 in the power rankings. I bet if the Blues went 0-5-1 in their next six games, they wouldn’t be top 10….

Iginla trade.
That guy said we could trade Boyes and another asset for Iginla. Hey Checketts, please find an investor because some blogger is giving us a gift of a trade. Could you imagine this with the Halak trade, 2 steals in the same year.
If we could throw Winchester on there
Or possible Brewer, I’d say go for it, although I’d be a little bit hesitant to throw Brewer out there given how short we are on experienced D-Men here at the moment.

Yeah...
Iginla for Boyes + draft pick/prospect (no one else on current roster) where do I sign up?
I wouldn’t want that trade. Iggy is too old and high priced at this point. $7 mill for the next three years, and he’s on the wrong side of 30. A power forward at 33 is on the decline for sure, and often rapidly.
His last three years stats.
Season .. . - GP - G - A - TP - PIM
2007-2008 – 82 - 50 - 48 - 98 - 83
2008-2009 -. 82 - 35 - 54 - 89 - 37
2009-2010 – 82 - 32 - 37 - 69 - 58

On the other hand . . .
he’s fucking Jarome Iginla. If you have an opportunity to pick up fucking Jarome Iginla, especially if the giving price is cheap, you go get him.
Plus, I have a feeling that his decline in the last two years has much more to do with the talent around him (that being, “a lack thereof”) than it does HIS play. Sure, a 33-year-old may be past his prime years, but he’s also playing on a team that went COMPLETELY overboard trying to protect their superstar and secondary stars – so much so that the team (or just Sutter, whichever you choose) turned themselves into a bunch of goons, all the while forgetting that they had to put goals on the scoreboard to win games. I like a fight as much as anyone, but . . . yikes.
If the price is Boyes, a 2nd rounder and someone from the defenseman surplus . . . you make that deal.
St. Louis Game Time . . . I need another beer.

Points Percentage Time!

Interesting, isn’t it, that Chicago is second in the West in points, and yet tied for the third worst point percentage…
Go Blues! Keep the pressure on the rest of the West!

Umm...that Detroit one should be 0.750 for second best obviously...
Don’t know quite where 0.562 came from…

Any themes for the chat with JR?
I know we did food and that seemed to work pretty well. Anything we should ask him today?

I asked him about Jay for Selke...

Good article from NHL-dot-COM...
…
Clickety-click on the linkety-link
I especially liked this bit:
Their October TV ratings on Fox Sports Midwest rose approximately 34 percent from last October, and St. Louis now has the fourth-best ratings for U.S. markets, behind Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Detroit.
Good on ya’, Blues fans and St. Louisans. This is how it should be (or better!)
