Another d-man bites the dust, Thornton suspended two games
Busy day in Blues land. No time to chat, let's go with the bullets.
- We first learned that Ian Cole had been recalled. The "college kid," and former first-round pick, had a great camp with the Blues and is in Boston with the team.
- Cole will be taking the place of Barret Jackman. Last night against San Jose, Jackman missed a few shifts with a knee injury. Looks like he's going to be out a few weeks. That means that Tyson Strachan, the Blues' No. 7 d-man on opening night, is now No. 4. Roman Polak, Carlo Colaiacovo and now Jackman—that's half the top-6 out with injuries.
- Nikita Nikitin might be ready to play this weekend. That's good news for the defense, for once.
Payne did say today that there's a "strong possibility" that defenseman Nikita Nikitin will play on the road trip. Nikitin suffered a broken wrist in early October, but the team said this week that he was close to playing.
- Last but not least, Joe Thornton will miss two games for trying to brain David Perron. The Sharks are not happy.
But hey, 7-1-2.
Feel free to use this space to talk about all the news.

Just posted this on twitter:
Blues top-6 dmen by career games played: Brewer (692), Johnson (158), Oystrick (58), Strachan (42), Pietrangelo (27), Cole (0).
Wow.

just insane
and of course, this is where our schedule starts getting busy… those numbers’ll go up fast.

Lets just all be thankful that Pietroangelo is playing as well as he is right now.. I’m pretty sure that back when the season started, and was the #6 defenseman (more or less), the Blues were planning on resting him once in a while, especially considering his nervous play in the preseason. And now he is looks pretty steady out there. It could be a lot worse.
And dare I say it, even Brewer is playing relatively solid d.

By the way people
this takes the place of an F-You Friday post. This is all that we have to fret about, and really who has a lot of F-you’s for a team at 7-1-2? It’s hard to complain about the team. Want to complain about your FML-like existences, well I guess this is the place to do that.

Well at least we enjoyed the 7-1-2 while we had it.
giving up that easy?
may i remind you that ian cole nearly made the team out of camp and outplayed petro. he’s not some bum.
with mason in net, sure this team is toast. with jaro? a-ok.
brewer is playing his best hockey since his last contract year. petro is the best d-man on the ice most nights. ej is developing into a stud. strach and oyster are nothing flashy, but solid.
25 mins from ej and petro, 20 from brew and cole and 15 from oyster and tyson. not a bad situation.
now pass me some more kool-aid.

and there's
a little silver lining in that it’ll give the Blues coaches and management a chance to evaluate these guys in game conditions. Find out exactly what they have – and what they’ll be willing to part with for, maybe, a scoring threat?

Do the Blues...
… still own that hyperbaric chamber that Keenan bought in the mid-90s? Might be time to start throwing the injured d-men in there, see if we can speed up the healing process.
I’m thankful that we’ve been able to play a couple solid games with a third of the original defensive corps on the shelf; but to lose a third just as the schedule picks up is a bad combo.
Hopefully Jackman’s knee isn’t too bad, and Cola passes his neuro scan quickly, and the doc remembered to duct-tape AND super-glue Polak’s tendon back together.
Joe...
Serious question here.
My skills of scouting players is not the same as a lot of folks here, I admit…
So….how did Cole outplay Petro?
I just didn’t see much difference in the two during training camp and preseason games.
PC Load Letter? What the fuck does that mean?
just based on reports
a lot of people thought cole had the better camp. i dont know if outplay is the right word, but cole could have easily made the team out of camp. he’s not a scrub.

i read the same stuff
didn’t go to any pre-season practices or whatever, but that was the consensus of the local media. they, like you, are not scouts, so that info came to them from somewhere, most likely the coaching staff.
i think that pietrangelo has taken a giant leap forward since then, but joe didn’t just make this up – i read it a few times in pre-season.
I'm not a scout, but I play one on TV...
I’ve watched a lot of junior, college, and minor-league games in my day, and I know a couple of things about what scouts look for.
Joe’s right in saying that “outplay:” isn’t necessarily the right word to use to describe Cole’s play vs. Pietrangelo’s in training camp. I watched them both on ice a couple of times in camp, and what I saw was two very good young first-round picks who play a different kind of game.
Pietrangelo is much more a puck-moving defenseman, far more adept at making the first pass out of the zone, and moving the ouck himself up the ice, than is Cole. Pietrangelo is also better skater, not by a wide margin, but enough to be noticeable if you know what you’re looking at.
Cole’s no slouch as a skater, though, and he has a better point shot that Pietrangelo — he’s got a Scott Stevens kind of shot, not quite as big and heavy as an Al Macinnis shot, but very accurate. Cole’s also a little better defensively (although Pietrangelo has made big strides in that area over the last couple of years), and has a more solid and muscular build, lending itself to a more physical and "in-your-face’ kind of game on defense.
Pietrangelo takes a few more risks with the pouck, and some of those risks weren’t paying off in opre-season, and that (IMO) is what made some people assert that Cole had “outplayed” him. Pietrangelo is still more of a puck-mover, and still takes some of those risks, but they’re aying off for him and the Blues now, and that’s making a world of difference.

Thanks Joe, Sean, and TB for the replies.
Was it enough of a difference to get a few fans riled up over Petro making the team versus Cole?
I admit I didn’t see much difference, but if others think he played better, but wasn’t better enough to make the team with lack of NHL playing (AHL as well???) experience to make the team?
I don’t know, I am still confused about it.
So basically, everyone is stating their opinion is based on the coaching staff saying things and not their own observations…. is that right? I think TB is stating his opinion here, but Joe and Sean are both stating what they have “heard?”…
Just trying to understand all the hatred towards management for picking Petro over Cole.
PC Load Letter? What the fuck does that mean?
I think that the "hatred"...
… came from people with an ax to grind, or people who see the cloud behind every silver lining. I think those are the people who wanted to see Pietrangelo’s roster spot as being a “face-saving” move. Just another strawman in the “management doesn’t want to win, they only want profit” line of cynicism.
Clearly, though, Pietrangelo has some “intangible” qualities that have silenced the critics. (Yes, they’ll come back out when the team hits a bumpy stretch, but they’re nowhere to be seen when the wins are flowing like water.)

WHERE HAS THE FUCK YOU FRIDAY THREAD GONE!? just cause we arn’t all bitter from watching shitty hockey any more dosn’t mean this thread should die… i have LOTS of pent up anger…
WWTJD?
See note above from Bradlee...
… this is the F-You thread on lithium. But if you’ve got spleen to vent, vent away.
You have got to be fucking kidding me
Everyone who was competing for a roster spot on Defense in training camp is now up here in some form. The schedule’s just starting to get busy.
Cola, Jackman get well soon. Nikitin, get off IR and get in here. Cole, play like you were on the roster from the start. Polak, have a bionic arm installed and start tommorow.

i really don't mind the oystrick/strachan pairing
reminiscent, to me at least, of last year’s cola/weaver duo. and i don’t hate oystrick taking shots on the power play.
