Wednesday Links: Brad Boyes scored a goal edition
I have to take advantage of every opportunity to use that headline. God only knows when I'll get another opportunity.
Blues News:
- Blues win! I thought Masonry might steal one with some added motivation but it looks like the Blues made good use of shots high to the glove side. [Post-Dispatch]
- Hildymac's observations. [Thrashing the Blues]
- Shockingly, the player without numbers on his jersey shown on the JumboTron was not David Backes eating a sammich in the sin bin. [Puck Daddy]
- Jeff Gordon wants more focus on offense as opposed to retaliatory play. I can agree with him to an extent, but the Blues aren't going to be able to play a wide open style where we trade scoring chances thanks to too many fucking injuries and the offensive talent just doesn't stack up against most opponents. The chippy, gritty play will have to continue as the Blues need to outwork and possibly out-agitate their opponents. [Post-Dispatch]
- Adam Cracknell's dad didn't believe him when his son called him about his promotion from Peoria. [Post-Dispatch]
- Gallagher is getting better at using the Facebooks. He passed along this link to a facebook app where you can vote to help the Blues guardian to be unveiled sooner rather than later. As Gravy put it, the Blues guardian "better not suck." [Facebook]
NHL News:
- If you didn't know about the Guardian Project, read up on it. [Guardian Project]
- More holiday fan entries over at Puck Father. Hockey fans are way better at this whole "internet" thing than other fans. [Puck Daddy]
- Shot production and a discussion about quality vs. quantity. [TSN]
- The Bourne Blog looks at players-only meetings. [Puck Daddy]
- More fuel to the "NHL back to ESPN" fire, among other sports TV ponderings. [Sports Business Journal]
- Anybody here ever listen to Barenaked Ladies at all? Steven Page is singing at the Winter Classic. [TSN]
- Don Fehr sat doesn with Canadian ESPN. [TSN]
Other Stuff:
- UWWildthing exposes ALF as a racist. I knew it. I don't know how but I just fucking knew this was going to happen eventually. [Gawker]
- Cats are good by me, but I don't think they have the same appreciation for forts as dogs do. [Buzzfeed]
- Want to make a horribly offensive Christmas card? This place has you covered with words blacklisted from Google. [Google Black Christmas]
- R2-D2 headphones. Do want. [Buzzfeed]

I'm waiting for the next Ovie commercial:
“No one ever got better at hockey by settling down and getting a real job due to their lack of innate talent on the ice. Go practice.”

I still maintain Vladimir Konstantinov got what he deserved...If you can't handle that then kiss my ass......
"I've got a bad feeling about this..."
Aw, come on...
You don’t want to see ESPN’s highlights of hockey and LEBRON JAMES and during the Stanley Cup Playoffs see highlights of hockey and THOSE AWESOME NEW YORK METS YAAAAAY METS OMG?
Also, I’m happy the Blues have links on their pages to players’ twitter accounts. Why? Phoenix doesn’t have a link to Paul Bissonnette’s Twitter. That’s just wrong.

Call me crazy...
The front page of ESPN’s NHL section is asking is the Flames should blow up the team and trade everyone away.
Which brings me to the question(s)….
1) Should we even kick the tires on Iginla?
2) What do you reasonably think it would take to get him? Petro, McRae and a draft pick? Two draft picks? Their cap space is AWFUL, so maybe these cheap players could do the trick…
He’d look reeeeaaalllll good in dark blue, wouldn’t he?

A bag of dorritos
He has a 7mil cap hit for 2 years after this and is getting about 30 goals and 45 assists the last 2 years and is on track do to the same again. Way overpayed for what hes putting out and hes 33, he will continue to get older. We can’t afford him anyway but if we could it would take A first and a prospect.
He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.
Jay McClement for Selke in 2011. Justice will be served. Penalties will be killed.
trading Petro
would be foolish at this point… he is basically the #1 powerplay pointman right now… doing what EJ should be doing, but isn’t.

also,
any thoughts on EJ right now? I know his knee is probably still bothering him, but his play as of late has been somewhat sloppy.. lots of turnovers, failed keep-ins in the offensive zone, some other bad decisions (dropping to the ice early) when defending, etc. He looks like he is pressing a bit…
http://www.stlouisgametime.com/
hoping its temporary
Now that Polak is back and the defensive pairings can go back to the first of the year arrangement, maybe EJ will find his game again. He has been a bit of a disappointment to me in a year of pleasant surprises on defense (see Petro, Brewer)
The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong. But that's the way to bet. - Damon Runyon
A few observations:
1. Love the random Thrasher that’s Photobombing the Boyes shot above.
2. I love iginla, but no way at this point would I trade anytthing of value from the Blues’ roster, or any high draft oicks, for him. If the Blues got anyone from Cal and Gary, I’d rather see them go after Niklas Hagman, who I think would fit into this roster like a glove.
3. I know EJ hasn’t been completely up to snuff, but unless the Blues can get a truly dynamic first-rate player in return, you do not trade him.
4. The Rivermen looked like they started their Christmas vacation 24 hours early last night. They did NOT play a good game at all.

… apparently doing his best mouth-breathing Todd White impression. I swear, it looks just like The Todd.

No one ever accused Gordo The Lesser of having actual hockey sense...
…I’m pretty sure the “hockey guy” moniker was hung on him in jest, and he never figured out the joke.
This year’s Blues were never going to be an offensive powerhouse; the master plan from Day One included a lot of grit and hard work and defensive focus, and keeping an eye on the 2011 free-agent bonanza. Subtract three of the team’s top five offensive talents, and the focus has to be on even more grit and hard work and team defense. Asking for an offensive focus at this point is asking for a bunch of 6-3 losses.
What bothers me most is that, over the past few games, the Blues are the ones getting out-agitated. They’re retaliating, rather than instigating. If they’re gonna win defensive games, they have to be the ones forcing the other team to take stupid penalties.
This right here...

…is more “Hockey Guy”-type wisdom in a few sentences then Jeff “I’m Not A NASCAR Driver” Gordon has managed in the decades (!) he’s been “covering” the Blues.

They just have to agitate the right way.
What I saw Barret Jackman do about 10 feet away from my schnozz wasn’t smart retaliation. It was extremely stupid and blatant, and as much as I love Jax, wasn’t the appropriate time for one of his trademarked facial expressions, which he had all over his face when he did it. He knew what he did and knew it was dumb, and you could tell by the look on his face he didn’t give a rat’s ass. That’s probably not good.
