Apparently this was system-wide.
People at Hail to the Orange (an Illini site) were talking about it as well. Kinda funny, actually. I bet it was a practical joke.

The Blue Note Zone - Because you KNOW you want to know more about the St. Louis Blues!
That makes it even more hilarious!

Apparently the sports blogs were experiencing personal dryness
For the record: I have no problem with the ad, the wraparoundness or anything associated with this. The people who own the company have put a ton of money into the platform and making it a real company. They need a return on the investment.
We’re here for two reasons: James Mirtle was the one who asked us and the functionality of the site. You guys know how kickass the comment system is. We have AP photos and we’re getting Getty images. We’re linked all over the place. It’s a strong foundation. Getting the big advertisers like Johnson & Johnson on board is huge.
Also for the record, we make next to nothing from the Web site. We hope that might change in the future, but it’s a long ways off and not realistic.
So while I understand some readers not liking some ads or how they change the look of the site, we still get to do what we want to do on the site. And that’s the most important thing to us.

I've never seen a collection of sports blogs in more dire need of lubrication in my life.

So a few comments on it
First of all I don’t mind the color scheme of the add, the purple/black isnt terrible. It doesn’t seem intruisive or noticable and if it wasn’t selling K-Y we wouldn’t be talking about it. I can’t even really make out what htey are trying to sell me, it looks like a tube of some black stuff that says Intense which makes me think its gonna make someones reproductive organs burn a little. The add on the right looks like 2 vibrators for “him and her” wtf man wtf? Also, ads are targetted at certain demographics, you advertise knitting supplies on knitting websites. Sports are usually dominated by the target “Males age 18-35” demographic. K-Y is….not so much. So what exactly makes htem want to advertise here, was the phrase “sandy vagina” just showing up a shit ton on google analytics for SBNation or something?
He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.
males 18-35 don't have sex?
I know what you’re getting at, but there’s a reason Trojan also advertises on sports things…
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
I'm not too worried about it.
I even clicked it a few time so they would get some results. Takes you to facebook.. shrugs
Whatever it takes?
but the more you talk about avery
the less likely the k-y ads come up. I’m not sure why…
