Wednesday links: David Backes — great American? or greatest American? edition

Holy shit that's a lot of punctuation in one headline.

It's pretty awesome that David Backes plays for my two favorite teams. Holy shit, is that man awesome. If Team America can somehow win a medal, Backes will become a superstar. I've said it before, but hes the total package — smart, well-spoken, good looking, a truculent. I don't know about you, but I'm excited.

Blues/Hockey news

  • Some people — I like to call them morons — have written off Alex Pietrangelo as a bust. A panel of scouts voted him the best prospect for 2010. [Sporting News]
  • The Rivermen are raising ticket prices. [Peoria Journal Star]
  • Guy Carbonneau has been asked to coach Canada's under-18 team. [TSN]

David Backes news

  • Part of me really hopes Backes threatened to break another players back ... again. (Thanks to CCR). [ESPN]
  • Backes gives Team America "Skill and Snarl." [Blues]
  • David Backes' goal, which I still haven't seen, was deja vu all over again for Erik Johnson. [Puck Daddy]

Olympic news

Team America (Fuck Yeah!) won yesterday. Just to set the record straight, I'm a big fan of international hockey and the Olympic sports without judges, but I also love the NHL. I hate the league shutting down play, especially with the Blues on a hot streak. I'd love for it to be like the NBA — where the best players can play and the season isn't impacted. That said, go Team America!

  • Team America 3, Switzerland 1. [ESPN]
  • Backes and EJ were two of the best players for the Yanks. Let's go (red, white and) Blues! [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]
  • Erik Johnson is living the dream. [Star Tribune]
  • The IOC is pretty petty. [Puck Daddy]
  • Team USA played good enough to win, but can still improve. [NESN]

  • The Russians beat Latvia 8-2. [Yahoo! Sports]

  • Text from NatetheGreat. last night: "Team Canada is. Sick." Indeed. The 'Nucks won 8-0 over Norway. [CTV]

  • Wednesday's hockey: Finland men vs. Belarus. Canadian women vs. Sweden. Sweden men vs Germany. Slovakia women vs. Switzerland and, finally, the Czech Repbublic men vs. Slovakia — I think that game might be fun to watch. [Olympics]

Other links

  • Not a traditional other link, but a damn good read. Roger Ebert can no longer speak — at least not with his voice — but is pumping out some of the best writing of his life. [Esquire]
  • Gary Coleman is a national treasure. [Buzz Feed]
  • Pop music is filthy. [Disgusting Lyric of the Day]

Video

It's David Backes day. Here is my favorite Backes video ever, and wouldn't you know it, he's wearing the ole red, white and blue.

In case you were unaware, Backes also kicks ass in the air. "David Backes is officially a G-monster."

More links to come Thursday. There might be something else up later. Or not. Who knows, man. Who really knows.

I wish there were some David Backes fans around here

All of this is just adding up for him. It is great. If he doesn’t become Captain of the Blues, I’ll cut my mullet off.

The Blue Angel

video was great. So did EJ chicken out or was just along but not for the ride?
Thoughts.
Great win by USA but they’ve got to pick it up a few notches. The men that is, the women well they’re just great already.

The photos from the winter carnival

on the Blues site are awesome.
My favorite is #26. I know you guys don’t like the mushy stuff but it just struck me as so sweet.

Boyes is looking down at the boy with his full attention like whatever he’s saying is the most important thing in the world at that moment. The picture raises him just a notch in my book.

Pretty cute pictures with the little ones.

I wonder if Perron has ever played basketball before? Also, Oshie looks almost young enough to be one of the enthusiastic little ones there.

Awww

I’m partial to #22 – Cammer surrounded by babies. There’s just something about that that’s weird and awesome all at once.

So NOW the Swiss dude that got cranked by Backes last year in the world tournament . . .

probably thinks that Backes is a bully.

Well, that fucker is WRONG! You know what Backes is? Punishment infliction personified.

And if you don’t like it, then you can kindly get your neutral ass off the fucking ice, you pussy.

Bigger group of morons:

STL Today commenters, or Puck Daddy commenters?

Reading those things 1) makes my eyes bleed, 2) leaves me 100% certain the world will indeed end in 2012 if not before, and it will be our own fault.

Referring to the comments on the Puck Daddy post about Backes wiping out that Swiss guy.

I don't want my nose to bleed without getting struck there by someone or something.

So I don’t read either one of those things.

There are more PD commenters, so they're a bigger group...

… but the Asylum posters are dumber on average, so it’s a wash.

It has to end in 2015, then...

… there’s no way the world can survive the baseball revelation in that movie.

I’m pretty sure the four horsemen in the Book of Revelation were War, Famine, Death, and Steve Bartman wearing a “Cubs World Champions” t-shirt.

Can we just temporarily change the name of this blog

to St. Louis Backes Time…because that’s what it’s turning into (for good reason). Or at least change the little slogan banner to reflect Backes’ status as the most awesome.

if backes medals i think we should

take up a collection and get a soup toureen engraved in his honor from game time, and give it to him..
