St. Louis Game Time PROSPECT SUNDAYS
Two of the Blues' top defense prospects from the Ontario Hockey league take their turn in the spotlight this week. For one of these players, the limelight is a familiar place thanks to his scoring exploits; for the other, his defense and team play is what has made him stand out.
2008 First-round pick Alex Pietrangelo continues to dominate the OHL, proving conclusively that he has progressed beyond the major junior level. In just two games this week, Pietrangelo scored a shorthanded goal and four assists for five points. The goal came with one second left in the first period on Saturday night, staking the Barrie Colts to a 3-1 lead in a game they would go on to win by a score of 8-5.
Meanwhile, across Lake Erie, 2009 draftee David Shields (168th overall) has been a rock on defense as the Erie (PA) Otters work to turn their season around. The Otters have been one of the hottest clubs in the OHL of late, going 6-2-0-0 in February and outscoring opponents 33-19 in the month to date. Shields has played all eight games, picking up four assists, six minutes in penalties, and a sparkling plus-10 mark, going from a minus-5 at the end of January to a plus-5 as of today.
T.J. Fast, acquired from Los Angeles in 2008, also made his presence felt this week with the Alaska Aces. In three games, Fast put up a 1-2-3 scoring line with a plus-1 mark. The goal, his ninth of the season for Alaska, was the overtime game-winner in a 4-3 defeat of the Las Vegas Wranglers at Sullivan Arena on Friday night. Vegas returned the favor with a 4-3 OT win of their own on Saturday, in which Fast assisted on a pair of goals to give him 20 helpers and 29 points in 40 games this year.
Hannu Toivonen, making his first start since Feb. 6, stopped 27 of 30 shots by the Grand Rapids Griffins as the Rivermen snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-3 win at Van Andel Arena. With the win, Toivonen's GAA dropped to 2.80, and his save percentage rose to 90.4%, leading the Rivermen in both categories.
In major junior, Jake Allen continues to roll for les Voltigeurs de Drummondville in the QMJHL. Allen has won his last seven starts for Drummondville, including all three games he played this week, and has allowed only 12 goals in that seven-game span. In a 5-3 win over Victoriaville on Saturday night, Allen stopped 49 of 52 shots against, raising his save percentage to 91.6% in 14 games with les Voltigeurs, and 91.4% overall in 37 games this season.
Clarkson University goalie Paul Karpowich, the Blues' seventh pick (185th overall) in 2008, lost both starts on the road for the Golden Knights this past weekend, but not for a lack of effort. Karpowich made 31 saves on 34 shots on Friday in a 3-2 loss at Brown, and 51 saves on 56 shots against in a 5-4 OT loss at Yale on Saturday. The loss was Karpowich's first in overtime this season; he has played in all three of Clarkson's ties this year (11/21 at Harvard 2-2, 12/4 at St. Lawrence 3-3, and 1/9 vs. Alabama-Hunstville 3-3).

I swear if we dont use Pietrangelo next year, I'll set fire to the DrinkScotch center
"HOLY JUMPIN!"
he was the worst defensemen on the team, so I have no problem with it.
Next year he’ll be Peoria eligible though, so if he’s not ready, he’ll at least be put in a position to grow.
Breaking News: I'm currently in the process of writing "I will not say and/or type "that word" 1,000 times.
He wasn't terrible
But he needed work. He was paired with the recently returned Brewer his entire time here so any negative stats can be justified. A lot of the -9(?) were Brewer still rusty and his 10ish minutes of penalties were the fault of Steve Ott who still needs to be punched in his face until he bleeds. But he did need more work, spending half a year in the AHL will be good for him.
He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.
I've disagreed with people on this multiple times
I felt that Pietrangelo set up a few 2-1 with Brewer being by himself, which isn’t a good position, but what can ya do.
If you asked me if Pietrangelo was one of our 6 best defensemen right now, I’d say no. I’m not sure if he will be next year either. I think he’ll reach his potential, just not sure how long it will take.

I'm impressed with Cundari's numbers
How much of that is him, and how much is that on a really dominating team? I recall that Windsor is/was the class of the OHL. If he were on a different team, what would the drop-off be?

It's hard to say...
If you look back at Cundari two years ago, before Windsor became the class of the OHL, Cundari’s numbers were OK, but not at the level they are now.
Barrie, by acquiring Pietrangelo, is making a move towards Windsor’s level. Barrie also has some quality scoring talent — including a kid I wouldn’t mind seeing the Blues take a shot at, Alexander Burmistrov — and good goaltending.
