Sunday links: Blowing the whistle because you can't see the puck is never a good idea edition

It's funny, on a night when the Blues were on the power play nine times, that after the game I felt like the refs had screwed the team. Nice whistle, asshole.

Oh, hello. This is Weekend Daddy right now. Since he's busy, I'm putting on my blogging slippers and doing the Sunday thing. You ready?

Blues news

  • Blues loss to Chicago 2-1. If you read my comments in the Game Day Thread, you may know that I'm a bit pessimist. However, I couldn't fit in with the assclowns that comment on the PD site. Every loss is on Brewer, Jackman and Tkachuk — never mind that all three had very good games. [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]
  • Antti Niemi was very, very sharp last night. [Chicago Sun-Times]
  • The Blues made a run at Ilya Kovalchuk, but balked at including T.J. Oshie. I really like the way Oshie plays, but I see him developing into a shut-down two-way player who puts up 40 to 50 points a year. Yeah that's great, but 50 goals > 50 points. I'm beginning to think young Osh is seriously overvalued by brass because he's a fan favorite. [Belleville News-Democrat]
  • Ty Conklin has a sweet hat and mustache. He does not have a sweet home record. [USA Today]
  • Erik Johnson, who has shown flashes of being worthy of the No. 1 overall pick and flashes of just being average, is focusing on playing defense. [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]
  • To get you ready for prospect Sunday ... an article on David Warsofsky. [Boston Herald]

Finally someone admits to not being completely convinced TJ Oshie will ever score 30 goals in one season.

Oshie vs. Kovalchuk Nonsense

Oshie is a heart and soul type of player. I’ll take these guys any day over some cocksucker who is looking for the “cash in” then head back home to convert it to rubles.

If you add a guy like Kovalchuk who I’m sure is a nice guy, you can NOT replace the giant chemistry void you create when a guy like Oshie leaves. I would assume this kid is just loved by the team. HE NEVER STOPS WORKING….EVER. Sniper type of players only work in one of the rink. That’s all they care about.

When it comes down to it and the Cup is on the line do you really think a guy like Kovalchuk is in place to block the last shot? Nope, a guy like Oshie sure as hell is.

Let me flip it on you ...

That may be true, but tell me, who would rather be the one shooting that puck in that scenario — Oshie or Kovie?

Look, I like Oshie. He plays hard, gives it his all, play solid two-way hockey. But, he’s not an offensive star. He can’t just score a goal when he wants. He is not a sniper. He has 25 career goals in 111 games. Over an 82 game season, that projects to 18.4 goals. Assuming he grows and develops, you can probably add 5-10 goals on to that total. That, however still puts him south of 30 goals.

T.J,’s future is a Selke-award finalist. He will be a fan favorite. He will play great defense. He will kill penalties and put 20-27 goals a season. He will be a great second or third line role player.

My problem is, because the fans love him so much, management has this idea that they can’t deal him. I’m sorry, but Ilya Kovalchuck is something that is missing from this club. Backes, McClemment, Steen, Crombeen and others can all play the Oshie role. No one can play the Kovie role.

Oshie’s ceiling, in my opinion, is lower than that of Berglund and Perron — at least offensively. There is something to be said about the two-way game, but damnit I want someone who can score goals. I’m tired of scouting other teams and seeing five guys with more points that the Blues top point getting. Want to know the reason why the Blues are struggling? They have no offensive studs.

Oshie is good, but I think the fans view has made him untradeable. He’s an asset. If you can get something, do it. But, they won’t for fear of alienating the fans.

Good Point Joe

I can totally understand the “who do you want to take the shot” type deal. This is the Blues, they get a lead and have to defend it in the 3rd ;-)

My experience with the “sniper” as a teammate is that the have no guts. They are usually mentally fragile and are very susceptible to droughts and streaks. It’s guys like me who have to get dirty in order for them to operate but maybe I wouldn’t get so dirty if I could score goals. The blood and guts guys are the one you can ALWAYS count on. Am I saying that I’d rather had TJ Oshie shoot then a Kovalchuk? Maybe but realistically, The Russian is a better bet.

I’m blanking but I don’t recall many snipers scoring the deciding goal. Hull in Dallas is one. But Talbot last year in Game 7. He seems like a dude that is will to get his nose dirty vs. a Hossa or the one Russian who does those Warriror trick shot commercials, what’s his name he’s in Ottawa now was in Montreal.

Either way, it’s a good conversation and I’ll take a team of dudes with heart over a team of dudes with skill any day of the week.

To rent Kovi, I would not include Oshie. Perron Maybe, Oshie No.
If they did sign and trade deals, like the NBA, where you are guaranteed a certain contract term with Kovi, then I probably would I include Oshie.

In general, I think NHL GM’s overpay for rental players. NJ didn’t here, because I don’t think they gave up that much.

thats what the blues wanted

they wanted a chance to negotiate with ilya before dealing. had they agreed on a new deal, the blues wouldve upped the offer. instead, they made a rental offer.

Which is exactly what the Devils offered to be fair.

Sorry, but the Devils gave up very little to nothing they will miss. To argue we should have sent the house for him doesn’t make sense, because the Devils got him, and they didn’t send the house. To me, the top pieces we have long term are Johnson, Backes, and Oshie right now. I think offering Perron or Boyes in a package would have been enough, and I’d be more open to that then those 3.

I don't know about that.

Bergfors and Cormier are two of their top 5 prospects. Bergfors, actually, is #3 in rookie goals scored, and #5 in rookie scoring. The Thrashers plunked him down on their top line with Little and Antropov, and it’s been instant chemistry.

Waddell might have thought about Boyes, but he would have jumped all over Perron had he been offered as well.

The Blues made the right decision

Kovie has already turned down a $100 million contract, so you know he is looking for a paycheck. This organization is more likely to give that kind of contract to a homegrown talent (Perron, Berlund, Johnson, etc.) than a rental.

As for Oshie, I have always thought of him as giving a checking line a scoring threat, but not really top line material (see Craig Conroy). Lately though it seems as if he is having trouble saying on his feet. He has also been causing turnovers for both teams a lot too.

I think it is worth noting he turned down a 100 million contract… to stay in Atlanta. If you were hi,, would you want to stay in Atlanta no amtter the price if you could take 2/3 million less a season to be on an organization that… well… isn’t hte Thrashers?

100 million, In Atlanta

That is the main point. Kovy wanted out of Atlanta. I suspect he will get a worse contract than if he was in Atlanta in the offseason. He’ll still get money, just not his giant paycheck.

They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

Unless he goes to the KHL...

… then he’ll get more. He had a meeting with their league’s prez before the game on Saturday night.

Frankly, I’m not 100% sure that he wanted out or not, but I’m very much pissed off that Waddell did everything possible to keep him – built the team that Kovalchuk requested, and Kovy repaid him by stringing him along for 5 months. His agent never backed down, but Kovy always said he wanted to be a Thrasher for life… apparently that was only if we overpaid for him. He is not worth $11 million a year, and no way do I want to not be able to extend Little’s contract and Bogosian’s contract when the time came because we overpaid for Kovy to stand there and not do anything.

You think people bitched about Hull being lazy? Really, really watch Kovalchuk play. He’s already doing the floating thing in Jersey, and that isn’t gonna fly long. It was tolerated here too much, and now that he’s gone, they’re playing a different game. Even in the loss to Washington and definitely last night’s game, they’re a different and more cohesive team – no deference to one guy; they played for each other. Quite frankly, other than the 7-1 ass kicking of the Kings, last night was the best game that they’ve played all season.
