Auf wiedersehen, Ears... Toivonen, Richmond to CHI for Fallon
Blues Get Fallon for Toivonen, Richmond
Goaltender comes from Chicago and will report to Peoria Rivermen
Monday, 03.01.2010 / 12:50 PM / News St. Louis Blues
ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced Monday the club has acquired goaltender Joe Fallon from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Hannu Toivonen and Danny Richmond.
Fallon, 25, has played in 29 games this season with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Rockford IceHogs, recording a 15-10-1 mark including a 2.64 GAA and .912 save percentage.
Last season, the 6-3, 190-pound goaltender spent the majority of his season with the Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL collecting a 10-10-1 record, 3.23 GAA and .901 save percentage in 22 games.
The Bemidji, Minnesota native was originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the sixth round, 167th overall in the 2005 entry draft.
Fallon will report to the Blues’ AHL affiliate Peoria Rivermen.
Fallon's career numbers (Toronto Star).
Fallon's 2009-10 numbers (AHL.com).
Blues trade Peoria's best goaltender -- yeah, that's what I said -- and penalty minute leader for a decent goalie.
I don't mind this move, but it leaves the Rivermen a little short on the blueline with the departure of Richmond. Is this a prelude to Ian Cole signing and reporting to Peoria after Notre Dame's season is over? Stay tuned...
More analysis later.

get mad if you wish
i hated ears being brougfht back. the guy we knifed, chis holt, admittedly still a longshot for the nhl, has battled back into the ahl for a crappy team and is hacking broduer out of the depth chart. again, anyone want to explain to me how a long shot that is overachieving (in holt) can be knifed while a past failure and still long shot can be loved?
now this trade ALSO seems to be a “fish or cut bait deal” with both the new guy and bishop. both huuuuuuge goalies with some nhl asperations (though both may be backups instead of starters), and i suspect both will still be looking up at jake allen when he arrives. next season going to be an ahl contest between the two for the next blues back up of the future tag???

Toivonen 6' 2, Fallon 6' 3
Toivonen 205, Fallon 190.
If Fallon is “huuuuuuge,” so is Toivonen.
Holt, for that matter, was 6’ 2, 205 as well… and I didn;t like seeing him get let go when it happened, and still don’t So you’re preaching to the choir.
All I’m saying is that Toivonen is better than Bishop, and the stats for this year bear that out, IMHO.
Agreed that both Fallon and Bishop will be looking up at Jake Allen when he gets to Peoria (next year), however.

more talking about
big ben. not ears. plus the book on fallon is he “plays big” ben IS bigger but perhaps doesnt play his full size all the time.
the point was with two large backup-tier goalies with about the same game, we basiclly going to have one slot for them in 2012. so its a race next year, isnt it?
unless it ist a race THIS year?!? bis in trouble then i think

Quite simply, Ears is a solid goalie, but didn't fit into our long term plans...
And I’m not particularly sure if Fallon does either, but eh.
Honestly, I think us clearing out defensemen who flat aren’t gping to get time long term isn’t a bad move. Where did Richmond rank on our organizational depth chart long term? 15th? We’re going to have a lot of guys coming to play hockey for us soon, so freeing up space makes sense to me.
Any chance Warsofsky joins Peoria late in the season as well?
Breaking News: I'm currently in the process of writing "I will not say and/or type "that word" 1,000 times.
Long-term, freeing up space on the defenswe depth chart makes sense...
…but at this moment, it kinda leaves Peoria in a bit of a jam. They have Mitch Love who can play either forward or defense, so my suspicion is that he plays pretty much exclusively on “d” for a bit.
As for Warsofsky, he’s only a sophomore, so I doubt he comes out early, and he can’t come play for Peoria even on a tryout contract and go back to BU next year, thanks to the hypocrites at the NCAA headquarters…

I watched Fallon play in Gwinnett last season a few times.
Not bad, but it’s really hard to get a grasp on a goalie at an ECHL game, especially when the Glads didn’t play too hot last year (and again this season). Glad to see that the return of Ears served a purpose.

Paul McCartney: We`re going to start a campaign to stamp out Detroit.
Turek has been fairly solid in Alaska... TJ Fast is better offensively, but his plus-minus is poor...
Fast is up with Peoria now.
With Richmond gone, Peoria’s depth chart on defense looks like:
Jonas Junland
Tyson Strachan
Nate Guenin
Justin Fletcher
Bryce Lampman
TJ Fast
As far as I can tell, neither Lampman or Fletcher are in the Blues’ plans. Guenin probably isn’t, either, and was most likely acquired — like Lampman and Fletcher — as AHL depth.
There should be a place for Turek in that lineup; I believe he’s on a Peoria contract, as opposed to an NHL contract, so they can bring him back at will.
For next season, Ian Cole will likely be on board, as will Mark Cundari. Alexander Hellstrom could be brought back from Sweden, and Kristoffer Berglund could come across as well.
Warsofsky and Cade Fairchild srill have NCAA eligibility next year, and I believe David Shields and Brett Ponich still have junior elgibility next year, so there’s probably no need to rush any of them up.
The 6’ 3, 215-pound, right-shooting Shields in particular has come on strong in the last month; he’s a plus-12 in February, plus-7 overall, after being a minus-5 at the end of January. He’s looking like a pretty good pick at 168th overall in the last Entry Draft.

Strickland says
The Blues (Peoria) have traded goaltender Hannu Toivonen and D-man Danny Richmond to the Chicago Blackhawks AHL affiliate in Rockford in exchange for goaltender Joe Fallon and D-man Darryl Boyle. All players will remain in the AHL.
He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.
According to Rivermen.net...
…Boyle was acquired in a separate deal by the Rivermen for future considerations.

Room 4 Cole and
a certain goalie from Vancouver? I’d like both of those 2 happen.

Here’s someone who gets it…
It’s because of that little fact that I love the minors so much… that, and the fact that much of my live hockey-watching experience was at minor-league or junior games in Denver and Portland.
The AHL club especially needs to get a lot more emphasis from the organization, and from the fans, than it does. The Blues need people in Peoria (or St. Charles, or kamsas City, if they happen to move the affiliate to either of those places, as has been rumored) who feel like I do.
They actually need me working for Peoria (or St. Charles, or Kansas City), but that’s a story for another day…

umm
2001 ICECATS lead the ahl in points with a solid 108. leading ahl god was derek the “can’t buy a ticket to the loo this season” armstrong.
2002 ahl point leader islanders team. a leading ahl scorer was peoria’s boganickki
2003 ahl dynamo was the bulldogs (oilers, canadiens) jason ward (career ahler) got mvp
2004 ahl was nashville current khl’er rosa was top point getter.
it don’t all happen in the a. not that the a isnt a valid tool, but getting your a to be the best ahl team does nothing for your nhl team.
parts is parts. the ahl geustalt dies upon hitting the nhl assuming there is an ahl geustalt to begin with.
role players for the a makes junland good? ok……………….
send cam and winchester and weaver down there for him then.

I always wondered
why the Blues organization doesn’t promote the Rivermen more.
Even something as small as a poster in the concourse. Something scrolling occasionally

Semi-Related Goalie Question
For Tomorrow’s Blues. Seeing that the Blues have not yet signed Mason, what do you think about them trading the Panthers for Vokoun? He’s signed through 2011 with a cap hit of 5.7 million.
I know he’s making quite a bit more than Mason was offered, but in my opinion he’s quite a bit better. I would like the Blues to finally have a legit #1 goalie, and I consider him to be one.
Also, with Florida looking to dump salary for picks/prospects, it’s possible to get him for a reasonable deal. If they want the farm, fuck ‘em. But if they are selling for a decent price, I’d be interested.
Opinions?
Hard to say for me...
Vokoun’s a quality goalie, for sure, but I honestly don’t know if I’d trade picks or prospects for a guy who’s going to be 34 in July and making almost $6 million per year for the next two years.
According to Kerber on the Sports Open Line this evening, right before the Blues’ pre-game show, the rumors persist that the Blues are very interested in Corey Schneider. Someone like him, or Josh Harding, would be whom I would target as opposed to Vokoun… but if the Blues could get Vokoun without having to give up a first-round pick or a really significant prospect, again, I don’t know.
Chris Mason isn’t so bad, and as they say, “better the devil you know…”

+1
I wanna know what’s up with Harding’s hip though, that is an injury situation I wouldn’t want anything to do with. I would much rather we go HARD at Halak/Price, one of them is leaving, and I would kill to have either of them over any of the other available options.
Thanks for the prompt response.
I agree with you. If they’re asking for a first rounder, AP, or Eller I don’t think it would be a good idea. I’d approach them and say “I’ll take this guy off your hands, save you $12 million, and give you any two of: 2nd rounder, a decent prospect, Mason, Carlo Colaiacovo.”
It sounds like I’m dreaming, but when a team is dumping salary they rarely get the better of the deal. Hell, look what Giguere got the Ducks. A mediocre, overpaid Jason Blake and an awful, overpaid Toskala. And Giguere’s resume is a lot more impressive than Vokoun’s.
As for Schneider, for those of us not as well-versed in the AHL, what do you think of him?
I know you're directing this at TB
but I think Schneider is a solid goaltender from the few times I’ve watched him for the Moose. I like the way he plays, I think he’s got it between the ears, and I definitely think he can be a good goaltender at the NHL level. Is he a world beater? Tough to say, goalies can either crack under the pressure or turn it up another level when they get up to the NHL, and it’s hard to know how he’d react if handed a #1 job, but I would sure as hell like to be the team who gave him the opportunity.
