This post and the comments are for all the non-Blues trades. In case you're not aware, the NHL Network is simulcasting Tradecentre 2010 from TSN. They have about 20 analysts in the studio, reporters around the league and an update girl for the NHL Network that doesn't know when her microphone is turned off. Crackerjack operation, that NHL Network.
One of the most jarring things this morning: when I turned it on, the first person to pop up on screen was Mike Keenan. Yeah, I threw up in my mouth a little. And holy jumpin' Darren Pang is also a part of the broadcast.

Matt ‘The Dagger" D’Agstoni is basically the T.J. Oshie of Montreal. Hard working kid, has skill but wasn’t expected to be much and just hard worked his way over the other prospects to make the habs roster. We have a good strength training coach here in STL and im sure the other players his age encouraging him to fit in with the team will bulk him up. I’m honestly pumped right now if what ive read is correct. Hes a slightly less talented Oshie.

You know jarmo/Payne have their input on these things. They might have seen something in Palu during his time in thepeoria or thought this Dag kid has the makings of something good. Montreal is trying to make the playoffs, they are buyers so getting a minor league prospect doesn’t make sense to them unless they needed a roster spot and some loose change in cap space.

There’s definitely something to what you say, Joe, but…
1. Fallon is probably = Toivonen in terms of ability at the AHL level and potential for an NHL career going forward.
2. Stastny was the captain in Peoria, true… but what I’ve seen in the times I’ve been there is that Cam Paddock and Tyson Strachan seem to be more or less the on-ice leaders there, every bit as much as Stastny. My guess is that one of them will be named the new captain.
3. Boyle replaces Danny Richmond; Richmond had more of a mean streak (witness his PIM totals), but Boyle is equally competent as an AHL-level defenseman, I think. Plus, Richmond honestly wasn’t playing all that much; at least, he didn’t over the weekend when I was in Rockfrord and Peoria watching.
4. Labrie brings some size up front, which Peoria was lacking.
5. Trading Palushaj does not make your Game Time Prospect Department very happy, but he wasn’t producing as expected, so there’s probably a reason why. He didn’t seem to me to be unhappy in Peoria, but there are almost always things going on behind the scenes that neither fans nor semi-professional media are privy to. I would expect D’Agostini to end up in Peoria eventually, to essentially replace Palushaj; either that, or the Blues expect to bring someone like Ian Schultz (already signed to an entry-level contract) up as soon as his junior season is over.
Overall, the Blues essentially got back what they traded away; these are lateral moves for the most part, which don’t make a lot of sense on the surface, but who knows. I’ve always liked Fallon as a goalie prospect, so he’s the one addition that I’m most interested in at this point.

last year I felt pretty intent that he wasn’t going anywhere – then again, I was also hoping for Pronger too, so what do I know?
This year, while we’ve looked good recently, I just don’t see the spark we had this time last year that pushed us in the playoffs – AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME, I’m not that confident that we’ll make it in. And if that’s the case, Walt may want to go to his hometown team for a chance (though not as good as it was last year) to finish out with a Cup.
I’m not too sure what we could get back for him, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see him go this year – last year, I would’ve been, I think.

Darren Dreger has reported Leafs forward Lee Stempniak is going to go. The frontrunner is Buffalo right now while a couple other teams including his former team, St-Louis are also in it. I would expect to see a 4th or 5th rounder headed to the Leafs.

Lack of interest
Boyes and Kariya both suffered from too big of contracts and not good enough play. Dealing either would have been a shocking move, simply because someone had to be stupid enough to take the trade. And the NHL GM’s generally aren’t THAT stupid.
Cola was the guy I thought was most likely to be moved today, since I don’t think we re-sign him. Surprised we didn’t even get e rumor around him. Wondering if the asking price was too high.

So to sum up the Blues' trades
We gave up a disappointing prospect for someone else’s disapponting prospect. We gave up a mediocre power forward for another mediocre power forward. And a prospect goalie for a prospect goalie.
