Thursday links: Excited to see Matt D'Agostini put the Blues over the top and into the 8th spot edition

The trade deadline was ... wow. So exciting. Every team just doing everything they can to win. The Blues made TWO trades, I mean the front office is really going for it this season.

I can't help but notice

A tinge of dejection in your feelings toward the Blues actions at the trade deadline. I have to ask though, did you really want the Blues to shake up their lineup a bunch and try to squeak into the playoffs with two backup goaltenders?

Playoffs, for playoffs sake is basically what the Blues did for 25 straight seasons and it got them nowhere. I’m just as tired as you of hearing the “patience while we grow from within” sermon…but unfortunately, the Blues find themselves in a spot where the players they want to part with can’t even be given away, let alone traded for a piece the Organ-I-Zation needs. So…yea I’m sayin’ it, “just be patient.” :)

I did want moves to get us to the playoffs this year

I wanted to unload some of the guys we almost certainly aren’t going to resign and get at least some draft picks. I mean do you really expect us to resign Kariya or Mason? no then we should have gotten something for them. We could have gotten some kind of draft pick for Kariya probably not a first round but something that we might have used to get someone we could have used next year.

Under no circumstances should he get rid of the comic books...

Those could be worth a lot of $$$ at some point.

thats pretty much my feelings

basically, what pisses me off is the team saying they’re going all-out for the playoffs, yet they didn’t add anything to help that goal. everyone here can see this is a flawed team?

it seems like the blues goal is making the playoffs just to make them. either make some moves to get a cup contender, or sell off the garbage (i know that no one was buying but from what it sounds like, kariya and walt werent even asked where they would go).

by averagejoe on Mar 4, 2010 11:15 AM CST up reply actions

I really don't know were your coming from here.

I mean I understand your point, but what did you want them to add yesterday? When the Blues were said to be in the running for Step, who’se a solid 3rd liner (which is basically all that was available) , you complained about it. What exactly did you want us to do?

by Novacain on Mar 4, 2010 11:34 AM CST up reply actions

here's where im coming from

you’re either a stanley cup contender, or you’re not. the blues, obviously are not.

what they should be doing is getting rid of all the crap that doesnt project long-term. if carlo isn’t in the plans beyond this season, then why is he here? if kariya doesn’t isn’t coming back, then why is he here?

either the team needed to dump guys and make holes in the lineup for guys like eller and junland … or deal something to get an impact player.

trading for stempy woudlnt have solved anything. it would have made the blues a cup contender.

basically, i dont want to just make the playoffs, i want to advance in them. the blues, right now, seem like they just want to make them. either go balls out to win the cup, of punt on the year and focus on the growth. doing nothing isnt the answer.

by averagejoe on Mar 4, 2010 11:40 AM CST up reply actions

See, I can't disagree with you more

The Blues were in a situation were either making big moves or selling pieces doesn’t make sense to me, becuase teh NHL is a league were a hot goalie can get you through a series. How many of the top teams in the West really scare you right now? The Blackhawks goaltending isn’t much if any better then ours, the Sharks are choke artists, and Phoenix, LA, and Colorado’s current teams haven’t been there before. The only team that I think has a clear advantage over us is the Canucks because they have Luongo. If we avoid them, then honest to god, I could see us making a serious run.

And, honestly, Kariya is still here because nobody wants him. Boyes is still here because nobody wants the cap hit. Cola is still here because he’s a talented player, and I’m guessing nobody wanted to give up enough to warrent giving him up, even if we’re just holding onto him for a year. We aren’t in rough shape in reguards to prospects, and we have plenty of D-Men waiting for a chance if Cola walks.

To me, the Blues are in a position that they proved last year that if they get hot, they can hang with anyone. It’s not like we were completely outclassed by the Nucks last year, we just ran into Luongo who was a wall. And unless we can get a truely elite player, why trade pieces for a small gain when you can keep them for the last 20 games and see if you get lucky?

by Novacain on Mar 4, 2010 11:54 AM CST up reply actions

i see it as this

they couldve at least traded the cap hits for mid to low picks, because sometimes you get lucky with the late picks worth a shot on potential then players not helping us now, when the likes of Eller can replace the likes of Kariya

by DESTROYER on Mar 4, 2010 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

Honestly, I don't think anyone was even willing to trade a late round pick for Kariya

And even if they were, keeping Eller down in Peoria for the entire season is a move I’ve liked. Players coming in from overseas getting a full year to get acclimated before going to the NHL game is a wise move, and if we had done it with Berglund, he might not have had such a big slump this year.

the game he played

up here to me looked like he fit, the other side of that is take a low pick and a contract similar to Kariyas. there are others in peoria that couldve done the same as Kariya

so you think

that this team, as currently built, can make a serious run in the playoffs? the blues, without and additions, are up there with teams like chicago, vancouver and san jose?

so if i choose to believe that, wouldn’t you have wanted to see the team make some kind of addition to this team. there were teams like carolina, toronto and edmonton that were very, very out of it. the blues have the kind of assets stockpiled that they could make a very good offer — ray whitney, perhaps. instead, they did nothing.

they didnt try to improve the team for a playoff run (or even to get in the playoff chase) and they didnt do they opposite and build for the future. that’s what irks me. trying to win now, but not trying hard enough.

A win against Dallas

puts us 1pt out and tied with the Flames who are off today.
As are the other teams just above us Wings and Ducks.

I liked the pick of Allen when it was made, and I’m liking it more and more every day.

Well last night's results couldn't have gone any better for our Blues...

…except maybe a ’Hawks loss to the Oilers.

It was almost mentioned by luvhockey, but last night’s games went down EXACTLY the way they needed to and now, with a win tonight, we’re tied for ninth and one point off the coveted 8-spot.

Vancouver over Detroit? Checkski!
Minnesota over Calgary? With authority!!!
Colorado over Anaheim? 4-3 victory…in Regulation, no less!

Every team between us and the 8-spot lost, besides Dallas, who we can take care of tonight. And all the other games tonight are pretty meaningless (well, LA beating Nashville could help us out in the long haul)

Feeling good…. feeling pretty, prettttttyyyyy…..good.

about soccer. Got me to thinking…..
Paul D’Agostino was a soccer player and is in the soccer hall of fame. Born in Italy. Retired from the Calgary Norh Am soccer league in early 80’s.
I wonder if they’re related

Any chance...

that despite St. Louis’ relatively quiet trade deadline day this season we will still get the annual GM phone chain post? Certainly one of my favorite parts of the NHL trade deadline…
