Karpowich, Clarkson U. eliminated from ECAC playoffs

The Clarkson University (Potsdam, NY) Golden Knights, and Blues' prospect Paul Karpowich ended a valiant postseason run in ECAC play yesterday, coming up on the short end of a 3-2 decision.

The Knights (9-24-4) lost game three of their first-round series against St. Lawrence University (17-14-7), with all three games played on the Saints' home ice in Canton, NY, and all three games decided by a single goal.

St. Lawrence won game one on Friday, Mar. 5, by a 3-2 score in OT, but Karpowich and the Knights came from behind on Saturday, Mar. 6 to win 4-3, again in overtime, setting up Sunday's do-or-die showdown.

Karpowich was outstanding in the three games of the series, playing all 197 minutes and allowing nine goals on 117 total shots against for a 2.71 GAA and 92.3% save percentage in postseason.

For the year, Karpowich finishes with a stat line of 1744 minutes played in 31 games, 101 goals against on 991 shots faced for a 3.48 goals-against average and an 89.8% save percentage. Karpowich's won-lost record was 8-19-4.

That's a valiant try by what appears to be a young Clarkson team.

I’m going to assume Karpo’s stats were lower as a result of having mostly young guys in front of him . . . not that he’s old himself – a sophomore.

But would Karpo get a chance here, with Jake Allen down the line? I guess we’ll see.

From what I've seen of Karpowich in Development Camps...

…he’s good enough to have a Ty Conklin/Chris Mason type of career, where he’s a solid backup that can rise to a starting role on occasion.

Recall a few years back how the Sharks built up a stable of solid young goalies in theoir system, and then started trading them off for other needed parts. I have a feeling that this is what the Blues are trying to emulate.

I’ve always liked Joe Fallon, and the Blues acquiring him just reinforces that belief in my mind. Between him, Bishop, Allen, Karpowich, and Berra (whom I’m told the Blues still like and have hopes for), the Blues should be able to stock an NHL and AHL team, and have a goalie for the ECHL affiliate as well, within the next five years… either that, or you’ll see s couple of these guys get moved for other needed assets.
