Monday links: And so begins another offseason of trying to find links edition
Blues are done and I find myself not caring about the playoffs. Should be a fun few months here at the link factory.
Blues news
- Chris Mason wants to stay in St. Louis. If Ty Conklin wasn't signed, I'd love to have Mason back as the No. 2. As a No. 1, I'm not sold. [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]
- John Davidson says the Blues are committed to the youth movement. JD, it's OK to add some old (talented) players into the mix, too. [USA Today]
- Speaking of JD, he's saying it's time for the kids to grow up. Wish he would've said this in October. [Bellville News-Democrat]
Hockey news
- Sheldon Souray really needs to work on saying exactly how he feels. [Copper and Blue]
- Teemu Selanne or Scott Niedermeyer — who should come back? Ducks fans discuss. [Anaheim Calling]
- Henrik Sedin is your Art Ross winner while Sidney Crosby and Steven Stamkos will share the Maurice Richard Trophy. Stamkos will get weekends and selected holidays. [TSN]
- Alex Ovechkin didn't have enough to win the Art Ross. [TSN]
- Stamkos' 51st goal went into an empty net. Hey, a goal is a goal.[TSN]
- Sidney Crosby was no considered by some (me) to be a goal scorer, but rather a playmaker. Whoops. [TSN]
- The Flyers are going to the playoffs, thanks to the gimmick. [ESPN]
- Here's your playoff schedule. [ESPN]
- A look at all the matchups. Out East we have: Canadiens vs. Capitals, Flyers vs. Devils, Sabres vs. Bruins, Penguins vs. Senators. In the West we have: Sharks vs. Avalanche, Blackhawks vs. Predators, Canucks vs. Kings and Coyotes vs. Red Wings. [ESPN]

On the Mason
decision—the 2nd commenter ‘gottheblues’ on the first link must be from here. Well said post.
Wow, the last playoff spot in the east came down to a shootout.
It looks like if you don’t have versus you get to watch nothing.

"•The Flyers are going to the playoffs, thanks to the gimmick."
Which gimmick is that – the Eastern Conference?
I know it's time for hockey because I've started singing "Don't Stop Believing" with the words "...born and raised in FUCK DETRIOT!!!"
d'oh!
but seriously the flyers would have been in with a tie under the pre buttman days :) its the habs who almost got to go home via gimmackcy. the habs, even though they were leading both teams going into that game could have been the team outside. THAT is the evil of the gimmick point, losing ground on both teams in a game.
sighh
win in reg = 4 points
loss in reg = zero points
win in extra =3 points
lose in extra= 1 points
all games produce the same amount of points.
FIX IT ALREADY!!!

Easier solution
All games worth 3 points
Win in regulation: 3 points to the winner
Win in overtime/shootout: 2 points to the winner, 1 point to the loser
Preserves the “point for gaining a tie”, which I was always ok with in the old W-L-T system
Provides an incentive for winning in regulation
The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong. But that's the way to bet. - Damon Runyon
that works as well
and ist that international point system in hockey these days?

on mason
during the last game the announcers said mason turned down an extension this season to “see how things went”
i was going to do stuff , involving math and what have you, but basically all it would prove is that mason is a #1 goalie. a middle of the road one but a number 1. over the last two seasons his average rank in wins, g.a.a and save percentage is like 13th, firmly in a starter position, just not a first tier starter.
still, if i were mason, and im not, i’m not sure why i would let myself become a stop gap for the blues who are desperately trying to find a goalie from within. and if i were the blues, i’m not sure i’d shoot a three or four year deal to a netminder with zero playoff wins in the note and 1 in the career
goal is likely to be a very interesting choice for the blues. there is the devil they know in mason, the kids who haven’t made the leap in peroria (with more kids on the way) an ufa class with a few names on it, though they may be too long in the tooth, and a few teams with multiple #1’s for next season sitting on their rosters now.
this is the one betting area i’d think the smartest money avoids…
