That goes double for Chris Mason, whose allowance of cheesy Swiss goals early in each of the second and third periods was killer. Mason did make other good to excellent saves, and was lucky when the Swiss missed a couple from point-blank range. But when the crafty Andres Ambuhl found a hole from behind the goal line and banked one in off Mason's butt to restore the two-goal lead 98 seconds into the middle frame, the writing was on the wall.
From Copper & Blue's write-up of Canada's 4-1 loss to Switzerland, the first time Canada has lost to the Swiss in 25 tries.
I don't know about you, but that description sounded hauntingly familiar.

Been there, done that...
..way too many times this year.
God bless Chris Mason for what he’s done for the Blues, but he’s simply not consistent enough to be the starter on a team that has any intention of going anywhere.

you could aruge
that he IS consistent. he lets in a softie (or two) every game and makes some great saves every game. if he could just do the second part more than the first …
sadly
its is blues plan A defined.
and plan b seems worse. sigh.

And Team Canada gets to see what the Blues saw pretty much all season.
Still have mad respect for the Masonry. I just doubt he sticks around.
St. Louis Game Time . . . I need another beer.
With the season over, I was starting to make excuses for Mason,
but this just brought back fond memories. The excerpt nails his play-style right on the head: he makes jaw-dropping saves, gets lucky on some shots, but then goes and blows everything he had been working towards with a horrendous move that just makes you want to cry (see: sliding to left). He plays exactly how a backup-goaltender should play, and he would be welcome to rejoin the Blues if it weren’t for the fact that Lawrence Conklin is the one with the contract for that role right now.
I’m not sure about Mason coming back. I don’t want it to happen, considering that there are goalies out there that the Blues could and should try to acquire. If does happen to get a contract again.. well I guess all we can do is grit our teeth, welcome him back, and hope he’s only around for a year. I just sincerely hope that he improves his play.
It's funny
That’s pretty much exactly what I thought when I saw the highlights. He reminds me of my rec-league goalie. We’re looking to replace him, too.
