Blame the referees for this Red Wings loss

SAN JOSE, Calif. — This wasn’t merely theft. This was grand larceny.

If it’s possible for the home team to steal a victory, San Jose did exactly that. And when they dust the Game 2 crime scene for fingerprints, they will discover some belonging to the guys in the striped shirts.

The Red Wings could be forgiven if their normally unflappable calm surrendered to the anger of having a crucial game snatched away by an unbalanced whistle in the final period.

You can’t have a third period in this series without the Sharks having a 5-on-3 advantage!

Complaining about officiating is usually the coward’s way of rationalizing defeat while side-stepping self-accountability.

San Jose has been the better team through two games. The Sharks are quicker in transition. They clearly have the most effective player in Joe Pavelski. And they have killed the Wings in the face-off circle. But you cannot ignore one telling statistic from the Sharks’ 4-3 comeback victory Sunday night: San Jose basically had nine power plays, the Wings only three.

Some players privately expressed their disdain over the officiating, but the public response stayed on the high road.

“You can’t let it get to you,” Henrik Zetterberg said. “But it’s definitely tougher to win games when you’re in the box that much.”

Coach Mike Babcock wisely didn’t take the bait when reporters asked for his commentary on the unevenness of the calls. He would have been justified, but when you have enjoyed the success that the Wings have over the years, it’s better focusing on what you could have done better — like winning more face-offs.

Nobody wants to hear the rich kids complaining about the unfairness of life.

“I know that they’re frustrated,” Babcock said, “but they’ve got to stay out of the box.”

The Sharks had the man advantage for a 4 1/2 -minute stretch in the third period thanks to three successive calls against the Wings.

Babcock could only laugh on the bench after Niklas Kronwall’s suspect hooking call against Pavelski gave San Jose another 5-on-3 at a crucial juncture, same as the start of the third period in Game 1. But that was nothing compared to the love tap Todd Bertuzzi gave Marc-Edouard Vlasic from behind in back of the San Jose net. Vlasic performed a dive worthy of a Sonny Liston bout, but it was Bertuzzi who sat for two minutes.

"It’s hard to win when you’ve got a steady parade of guys going to the box," said Babcock.

The series isn’t over. The Wings haven’t played poorly, short of the first 10 minutes of Game 1 when they searched for their lost legs. But they find themselves in a perilous predicament. They must win both games in Detroit or risk the Sharks seizing a lead that perhaps even they couldn’t choke away.

"We can’t focus on anything but the next game," said Nicklas Lidstrom. "Game 3 is all that matters now. We just have to shake this off and move forward and hopefully things might shift in our direction."

If there’s a decibel level beyond ear-piercing loud, The Tank reached that stratosphere in Game 2. The crowd understood the significance of this game. Even though their home favorites possessed an early 1-0 lead, there’s that ever-present cloud of impending doom over this city in regards to its hockey team.

That cloud grew more dense seven minutes into the first period when San Jose’s Joe Thornton gave the puck away in the Sharks’ attacking zone.

Pavel Datsyuk grabbed it and raced down ice with two San Jose defenders wrapped around him. But he still created enough space, throwing a shot on net that Evgeni Nabokov inexcusably let get past him.

Groans were heard all through Silicon Valley after that one.

But then "The Big Pavelski," as they call him here, reminded everyone that he is right now the best player on the ice for either team.

He’s got four goals. He’s winning 80% of his face-offs. And he’s still not satisfied.

"It’s still a long, long way to go in this series," he said. "We fought back from behind and took advantage of our power play, but anyone who thinks that we’re in control of this series is crazy."

Fuming at the refs won’t cool off Pavelski and it won’t make them more effective on the dots, but the Wings are justified in lamenting that they deserved better than what they got.

Drew Sharp is a twat

His last story focused on Joe Pavelski and how he was a hard working, talented late round pick that should therefore be playing for the Wings. A reporter approached Pavelski and stated as much, to which Pavs replied “Why would I want to be one of them!?

But hey, I’m interested in these mysterious fruits that reverse aging.

Drew Sharp should read his own writing.
Complaining about officiating is usually the coward’s way of rationalizing defeat while side-stepping self-accountability.

Go ahead, Drew. Read that sentence about six times, then go away and come back with a better arti— wait, what? You’re writing for Flying Tire fans? Oh, then carry on. They’ll eat that shit up all day long. The Wings haven’t lost an honest hockey game since Steve Yzerman was in high school; those games they didn’t win were stolen by the refs, or Gary Bettman, or the other team’s cheating, or underpants gnomes, or something.

A few great videos

Loved the No Guts, No Glory video.
In the TSN Petro video he sure doesn’t look 19. A great Blues fit when able to grow a beard like that at that age.
Odds he plays most games in Peoria??

The Blues aren’t talking about their failed handling of Junland because none of the media has asked. I want to see this make it into the media, then see if what they say.

The article at PPP about blogs and media interaction was a great read. Lots of great responses too. Definitely worth the time. I finally by the end of the read figured out what MSM stood for. Call me ‘out of the loop’.

the blues silence on the matter

is deafening. no mention on the Web site, no real quotes from anyone involved. its been all jonas.

by averagejoe on May 3, 2010 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions

i don't think it is

deafening per se, the blues, historically, announce every singing, even echl level ones, but they never announce people NOT signing, what did the blues site say when they finally cut ties to schwartz? nothing.

i guess from the blues perspective (and perhaps even rightly so) jonas’ situation is a BLUES work in progress currently. What would they say, that this off season, before the blues make any roster decisions or lose his rights (the valid contract offer is all the blues needed to do to keep the restrricted tag on him), jonus might end up playing in europe?

should jonas sign his contract or sign a sweetened deal, since it is, reportedly, a 1-way contract, it trumps his euro play EVEN should the blues stick jonas in the ahl yet again next season :) he would be a “a” boy with an “n” contract so long elite leagues…

i may be wrong

but i havent heard a comment from jd, pleau/armstrong, payne etc. with him still being blues property, id like to know where he stands in the ogranizaiton.

by averagejoe on May 3, 2010 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions

he is a restricted free agent

and blues offered him a contract whioch is all they have to do.

as for where he stands i think that is the issue here, jungland, and he WAS NOT ALONE, feels he was “nhl ready” 10 months ago. blues are deep in his position and probably would have preferred an all-star ahl season than an nhl pressbox one

the longer issue is, even at “nhl ready” he is currently ranked 5th best blues PROSPECT at d. his assets are valuabble however (skating, hockey sense and hands, what more can ya want from a transition d) his scoring is likely to take a severe hit at the nhl level.

jonas is a key “bap” draft problem/oportunity.

now that the blues got 57 billion d-men can they tradse some for parts? and which one do they trade, someone above jonas to open up a slot for him, jonus, or do they just keep stringing these guys along until we can’t signb em?

in one sense his draft position is irrelevant, in another it may be telling. he is a first pick of the 4th round so really a 2nd-3rd rounder. 4 d-men picked after him have more nhl games under their belt. one is tied. 2 of the 3 d-men selected before him in the late 2nd round also out gamed him.

he may not be the best person to judge his own progress, but assuming a larger nhl role last season and this coming season if really what SHOULD be expected from a successful pick in that location of the draft

failed handling of Junland?

it seems to me Junland’s has an attitude problem is more to blame than the blues handling of him . . .

he is a third round draft pick, acting and treating management as is he were a round 1 pre-Madonna, giving them ultimatums like they do not have the depth to replace him. last season management had a choice to bring him up to help offensively, but ran a huge risk having half of their defense being under the age 23 . . . it was only the 2nd full season for both Polak and EJ . . . I can understand their hesitation. Junland is small (around 30 pounds less than RP and EJ) and as we all learned had a bit of big head, which is not something we needed more of ESPECIALLY since AM was still the coach when the season started.

already this off season, he was offered a one-way 500,000 deal. . . and he turned it down. The team was showing a response to his want to only play in the NHL. . . and by trying to tie the hands of the management team, he better have expected to take a low pay . . . he refused them.

So when I say, i am glad to see him go, know it is based on all he has done to mess up his own career. . . STL doesn’t need this BS . . . if we want another young D-man other than Petro . . . look too Tyson S. or Ian Cole . . . and then on to Rundblad

by breibird on May 3, 2010 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions

i think jonas just wanted a shot

for some reason, he never seemed to be in the blues plans. unlike young guys like oshie, ej, and berglund, jonas had nothing handed to him. he was sent to the AHL, like polak, to work on his game. he was an all star for the rivermen. twice. yet, he never seemed to be in the plans.

you say he was small — i guess a small player has never made it in the nhl. all this talk about him not being NHL-ready when he hasnt played in the nhl is curious. how do we know? gretzky (and im not saying jonas is greztky) was said to be too slow and too small to be a star. sometimes players define scouts. for every crosby that perception is right about, there is a pat stefan who fails.

what harm was it in giving him a shot? as for the under-23 d-men comment, the blues have like 30 d-men in the pipeline under-23 — does that mean no one will get a shot until polak and ej turn 25? if the blues aren’t going anywhere, and they werent last year, whats the harm in letting the future get some ice time? some guys play way older than their age (polak). some guys play way younger than their age (winchester).

1) Louis CK is FUCKING AWESOME, my favorite comedian, and the bag of dicks gets me every time too, especially when he describes it as a ziplock bag of congealed chicken parts because thats how I pictured it.

2) Someone invited me to “Throwin Up the Wing” and I bitched them out hardcore. I mean I tore them a fucking new one. And if I see ANYONE doing that I WILL punch them in the face NO MATTER WHAT.

I’m gonna feel real sorry when someone with tourette’s has THAT particular tic (throwin up the wing), because they will get repeatedly punched in the face. Not even tourette’s will be an excuse…

…. only an excuse to get FUCKING BEAT DOWN!!!! HAHAHA!!!!!

3) I am surprised I haven’t been invited to a “lynch Howard” group on FB, because they ALWAYS blame the goalie (trust me).

4) FUCK DETROIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, AM, I have a girl in one of my classes who transferred in from North County to metro ATL, God love her. She was put into on-level (which is fucking insulting as shit), wavered up to honors, and is fucking blowing everyone else away. She’s my favorite student, and not just because she’s from StL and compliments me on my Blues & Cards stuff. I need to ask her what high school she went to before she moved down here. And then probably suggest that she force her folks to move her home. And take me with them.
