Scott Mellanby named assistant coach of the Blues.
Not out in the papers yet, but apparently a press release is making its rounds on Twitter. Congrats to Mellanby - can't wait to see what role he plays behind the bench.
Update: Comments from Mellanby.

On the Blues site
now.
Isn’t kind of unusual to hire someone that has never coached before?
Thanks Hildy for the heads up

I happened to be on Twitter at just the right moment today.
Honestly, I’ve been kind of Twitter-Silent while on vacation, so this worked out pretty well.
Reporter: There`s a "stamp out the Beatles movement" underway in Detroit. What are you going to do about it?
Paul McCartney: We`re going to start a campaign to stamp out Detroit.
Can you coach the rat trick?
Let's go Blues!!!

I see this as a good move.
Mellanby’s work ethic is something everyone in that locker room can learn from. If they all put forth the effort that he did as a player, nothing can stand in our way. Making that a reality … well, we’ll see.

The paragraph that is
"One of my strengths as a player, I played pretty much every role there is to play: first line, fourth line, I scraped a little bit to make my way. I can identify with it all. I ended up being a captain and leader, which gives me perspective on that. Some days, your top players need guidance and some days it’s other guys. I want to provide that."
Now that Kariya and Walt are gone we lack age, we lack experience. Andy Mac has some of it but people will be stepping into new roles and need some guidance which is pretty much what an assistant coach does anyway.
He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.
Just because Jay McClement is the best defensive forward in the NHL doesn't mean he should win the Selke.
This is a solid move.
Hell, look at Joe Sacco. His career arc is about the same as Scott Mellanby’s. Even if it’s at a different position, both playing and coaching.
I don’t see how having Scott Mellanby around could hurt The Note. I really like this move.
