Puck Daddy asked Game Time to offer a tribute to the Cup-champion Blackhawks. Guh. That was hard to type. Anyway, Brad Lee was up to the task. Enjoy a Game Time-style tribute.

Loved the typical douchebaggery from a few Hawk "fans" in the comments...

all of whom, I’m sure, were patiently suffering and standing by “their” Hawks during the nearly two decades that the Indian Heads had fallen into mediocrity and worse since their last appearance in the Cup final.

Yeah, genius, the Blues are still a team… and the joke’s on you, d-bag, because Brad doesn’t actually live in St. Louis… he hangs out in one of those hoity-toity suburbs — Maplewood or Crestwood or some other ’wood — with the rest of the glitterati.

How’s it feel to have bought a Stanley Cup after half a century, and to know damn well that you won’t be able to bring half of these guys back next year?

Welcome to Cap Hell, you Brainiacs…

…now go fan ta yourselves. And take Mullet Queen Candy with you.

Curious

For all these the team getting eulogized usually took it in stride and accepted it as good natured rivalry. All the hawks fans responding on PD are just being a bunch of cry baby pee pants still whining even after the season is over.

I was sort of meh on it honestly

It was good but it didn’t really hit all the bases as far as the team goes, it wasn’t really vitriolic, and it didn’t really illustrate well enough the point it was going for. The point being that since your gonna get so cap screwed that maybe 8 players will have to get league minimum the hawks are sunk for more than a few years. Yeah you will have some good players to carry the team but I don’t think that will be enough and missing the playoffs for the next 4-5 years is a very real possibility. That’s sort of the time frame the blues will be playing their best and hopefully contending but we won’t have anyone to rub it in to because all the blackhawk fans who are so boisterous now will be well off the bandwagon. I find the whole thing quite displeasing.

I like you guys at SCH... y'all are fun.

But man, some people are really showing their asses and are suuuuuuper hyper-sensitive. I had a Hawks fan rip me on my blog for applying a psychological theory to why Burish said the doofy thing he did. Not ripping him as a player, or knocking the Hawks, or anything. This guy’s rant read like a PMSing 13 year old girl wrote it. You all at least understand humor as it relates to your team. Maybe that’s why I have a lot of Hawk fans following me on Twitter and the one Wings fan that made the mistake to kind of un-followed. My bad. I think I offended her when I might have mentioned fucking Detroit or whatnot.

I thought that the tribute by Brad was great. Actually, most of them were pretty good this year. I laughed at ours’ last season – why folks can’t take a joke is beyond me.

Know sports, then talk douchebags.

Know English, then talk, douchebag.

Commas are your friends.

As for knowing sports, how’s it feel to have a baseball team that hasn’t won a World Series in 100 years?

Since coming to St. Louis, the Rams have as many Super Bowl appearances – and victories – as the Bears have, and the Bears have been in Chicago since what, the days of Al Capone?

This is the first Cup for the Hawks since six years before the Blues were even in existence, and your chances for repeating are two: slim, and none. You might be able to keep a few of the core stars around, but the supporting cast — without which no team wins a Cup — is going to be all AHLers because you’ve overpaid everyone and are going to have let several key players go for virtually nothing because of the salary cap that your team’s former owner (may he continue to burn in Hell) so desperately wanted.

Professional basketball is completely irrelevant, so the Bulls’ championships mean nothing.

Enjoy your Cup; I’m sure that attitudes and arrogance like yours make Stan Mikita and Brett’s father very proud.

And thanks for imposing Rod Blagojevich on the rest of the state of Illinois. Those of us who live in the real Illinois would like nothing better than to see Shit-cago take their favorite native son back and then secede.

Downstater, and damn glad to not be a Chicagoan. Macoupin County forever.

I do not think Huet will be a Hawk next year one (Rockford included)

I expect it to not come cheap, no return value, and will probably lose 1-2 prospects or a good draft pick or two to entice a team to take him, but someway, I see Huet being moved. Niemi will be resigned as RFA and Crawford become backup, unless the deal includes another Goal Tender (someone else trying to dump) bumping Crawford to the trade block, or kept in the AHL.

But Huet will always have his name on the Grail.

I think both are gone

You might get some small change for one of the other players you move out then use that to also ship off Huet. Niemi could be in for a big pay raise, would Chicago sign him for 3-4mil? Also keep in mind bonuses next year count towards the cap in their entirety so you can’t just give him a incentive laden deal. I find the whole cap situation with Chicago super interesting.

Neimi is going to be resigned (unless Huet can not be moved)

Only Toews is getting a bonus $1.3M for the Conn Smythe, Keith may if he gets the Norris, but I do not think he will, since voting was before the post season started, and his last month was rough. Versteeg was signed last off season (after the qualifying offer fiasco) for $3.1M considered over market and he was the Calder runner up, so I’m figuring $2-3M for Neimi. Really it is who of this bunch will stay, who will go? Sharp UC (under contract) Ladd RFA Eager RFA, Burrish RFA, Hammer RFA, Huet UC, Madden UFA, Seabrook UC, Sopel UC, Versteeg UC, Buff UC, Bolland UC, Brouwer UC. Capmbell is going nowhere with his $7+M hit. I expect half these guys to go, Madden certain (unfortunate) Sharp probably (really unfortunate) Buff or Versteeg, Huet (I hope), 2 of Ladd, Eager, Burrish. Hammer will return, Seabs probably, Sopel 50/50, and either Bolland or Brouwer go.

But this will still leave a core of
Toews-Hossa-Kane-Buff or Versteeg, Bolland or Brouwer Keith, Campbell, Hammer, Neimi, one of Eager/Ladd/Burrish, and Seabs or Sopel. This is two Full Offensive Lines and two Defensive pairings, plus Neimi in net. Not a bad core to start off with, still the envy of many teams.

The Hawks have decent depth in Rockford with minimal Cap hits to help fill out, with many having played for the Hawks already.

I thought this on Puck Daddy today regarding Niemi was interesting.

I’m sure that you’ve already read it, but it seems like he’s either unhappy, his agent is blowing smoke, or he’s just super emo.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/With-cap-crunch-can-Blackhawks-bring-back-Antti?urn=nhl,247831

“You have to make a smart hockey decision,” Zito said. "Where does he want to play? Does he want to be part of this thing?
“This city, it’s unbelievable now. But he might say ‘no.’ In fact, he’s the kind of guy who might say, ‘I don’t like it.’”
“The other night, we were all going to dinner and I was like, ‘Hey, we’re going to one of these Mexican places, do you want to go?’
“Antti says, ‘No. Too many people will see me.’”

He’s apparently not all about folks running up to him and interrupting his dinner, and he sounds kind of shy. He might be one of those rare players who prefer not playing in a hockey-centered market.

I don't think Huet is going anywhere.

If the CBA allowed teams to trade cash, the Hawks might be able to send him and $5 million to some team who wasn’t going to spend to the cap. But money can’t be transferred, so the Hawks would have to find someone willing to accept a backup goaltender with two years and $11M still owed him.

Teams looking to spend to the cap won’t want to tie up 10% of their money in a second-string goalie; and teams wanting to save money won’t trade for that kind of contract. Huet’s almost certainly headed for Rockford; and Campbell may have to go there, too.

I think Mr. Lee was slightly inaccurate in calling Huet the most inconsistent goalie on the Cup. I’m pretty sure Roman Turek’s name is on it, as he was Belfour’s backup in Dallas in ‘99. But hey, Cristobal can be Mr. Inconsistent’s backup.

by BleedBlue42 on Jun 12, 2010 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Before Yzerman took over at Tampa Bay, I'd say Huet could go there.

But I think Stevie Y’s too smart to even remotely consider that to be a good idea. There are a few teams who could stand a goalie and who have the space, but I don’t know if Huet’d be happy on any of them.

No that is why it will not be a Huet deal

But something(s) added with it to make the $5.5M pill easier to swallow. A team in the rebuilding stage, that can absorb two years of mediocre goalie.

But the Hawks are going to need to add on top of Huet, so for the other team it is not as much Huet as it is the rest. This could mean Crawford, Bickell, Boyton, Skille, Klinkhammer, or a number of other min salary non-free agent prospects be moved as well, or perhaps future draft choices (2nd round 2011, 1st round 2012, etc..) also may be on the table. Only about 1/3 of the teams are in play on this. Those who are looking for good prospects to build around, or go with other prospects for a team still 2-3 years off. In that time Huet will be gone, the cap hit clears, giving them the ability to sign 1-2 veterans for a Deep Playoff run.

This is what the Hawks will do. It is not going to be cheap, with the loss of either prospects or draft picks or both, but Huet will be moved.

So ive been reading up on this

The hawks hit 5 mil in bonuses this year so that will carry over to a 4mil cap hit next year. There is also supposed to be a close vote on whether the cap increases this year or not. If it doesn’t increase it will go down to 56 mil even and it will lower escrow costs, or as Bettman mentioned “It might even go up by as much as 2 mil” which brings it to 58ish which still leaves the hawks 52-54 to work with.
Hossa/Teows/Kane Campbell/Keith are making a combined 30mil and even if you only roll 22 players on the roster thats still 22mil to sign 17 players. If you add Niemi for 3 and keep Seabrook your looking at 15 players for 15mil which is a rough sell all around. For Huet you could potentially just buy him out if no other options present themselves.

He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.

Buy out of Huet saves very little

Because of his age and tenure, I can not remember off the top of my head what the hit is, but it is nearly the full salary, then the Hawks still need to fill the position. So buyout of Huet is not an option, nor is the AHL.

Seabs is expendable and is not a certain return. Only Toews, Keith, Kane, Hossa, Campbell (based on contract) are 100% certain. Neimi and Hammer are top priorities as RFA, than a real pecking order goes down, with many in Rockford at $800,000/yr expected to be in the mix.

But a few teams are going to end up with some good players from he Hawks before long. I would not be surprised to see Buff or Versteeg ($3M/yr) or both moved, for 2 $1M 3rd line forward just to get more cap room, and Patrick Sharp go ($5M/yr) for 2 1st-2nd line Forwards at $2-3M year. You will see lots of moves like this, and remain convinced Huet will be one of them.

The buyout hit

Its always 2/3 of the salary payed out over twice the years remaining. Example: A 3 million/1year contract turns into you paying 1 mil for 2 years. I beleive this works out to 1.8mil for the next 4 years in Huets case. If nothing else its an option. You still have a very good first line for offense and defense which is more than a lot of teams, it all really depends on the the quality of players you fill out the other 14 spots with.
