Wednesday links: Welcoming Scott Mellanby back to the fold
What's this? Actual good news? Awesome. I always liked the dude. In my life, I haven't been to many Blues games — only a handful — but I was in the crowd when he potted four goals for his first-ever hat trick. It was awesome.
Blues news
- Scott Mellanby already lives in St. Louis, it just makes sense to have him working for the Blues. [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]
- CTV says Mellanby is dumping the Canucks. I wonder how they took it. You think they're listening to emo music and writing poetry? [CTV]
- Jori Lehtera is going to the KHL, but he's got a deal with the Blues. [OurSorts Central]
- Some (most) Blues fans aren't happy with the Cup finals. [St. Louis Globe-Democrat]
Hockey news
- Game 3 tonight. [ESPN]
- Nicklas Lidstrom is returning to the Wings. He's 40, but somehow this means the Wings will have one more Cup run. [Winging it in Motown]
- The Penguins need toilet flushers. [PensBurgh]
- Bill Daly, the NHL deputy commissioner — the Barney Fife to Gary Bettman's Andy Taylor, if only Andy were legally retarded — says don't expect the NHL to return to Hartford. [TSN]
- The Oilers signed Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson. I want his jersey. [TSN]
- Ben Eager is not fond of Chris Pronger and his puck stealing. [TSN]
- Taylor Hall is No. 1, Tyler Seguin is No. 2. The player the Blues will draft will probably be in the mid-50s so Jarmo can go out with a bang. [TSN]
- Teams have talked to the Leafs about acquiring Tomas Kaberle. You mean GM's have asked about the availability of a good player on the trading block? Shocking. [TSN]

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky was in a production of The King and I? Well anyway, before the show, Brasky chloroforms the entire cast, and slowly eats them in front of the audience for two hours. The production got pretty good reviews.
Mellanby
Awesome news. I’ve always been a big fan. In the Post article he has just the right mix of humility and arrogance that makes hockey players rock. I’ve come to believe the Blues lack attitude and/or the elusive ‘chemistry’ more than talent. If we can get some Mellanby attitude in the dressing room and on the ice we’ll take big steps forward.

Mellanby's scouting work
If he’s been scouting the Canucks’ opposition by watching various teams against the Blues he should have a plan or two to make changes to the Blues’ lines and pairings to make them play better against the rest of the league. Now, will he be able to convince Davis Payne that his changes are best for the team? I hope so, because I don’t like this whole 40 wins and 42 total losses record, and it doesn’t look like anyone else here does, either.
Also, is it bad to hold the Blues to the same standard I hold the Cardinals, that is “At least do better than Chicago by season’s end, and preferably clinch the division early”?
Have faith in Payne
When Payne took over, the Blues were around 17-17-6 and were absolute trash at home. When the season was over, Payne’s record was 23-15-4, and he got the Blues up to a 12-5-2 record at home, which included a six-game home winning streak which ended when the season did. Pretty good for someone who was thrown into the mix with half the season already over. Payne gets to build the NHL roster this year, after an offseason that has allowed him to evaluate the players at his disposal. We’ll have new Captains (hoping for a C-A-A of Backes-Jax-Jay), a team that’s of Payne’s own design, and our teams.
I just watched NHL Live’s interview with Davis Payne himself, so I’ve been on a coaching-stat binge. Apparently, some of the Blackhawks players were being interviewed about the toughness of the Flyers, and the players in turn said that the Blues were the most physical opponents they’ve faced. Hopefully we can continue that into next year.
While I’m at it, Bettman math! I can’t decide whether the OTL should be grouped with regular losses. When I was looking at coaching records, Murray was regarded as hovering around .500 when he was canned, and Payne was listed as nearing .600. Payne’s record groups OTL with wins (games that acquired points, I guess?) while Murray’s excluded them. Does anyone know if there’s a standard to the win percentage?
I’m not sure if there is a standard, but I tend to go with adding overtime losses with regular losses, even though they generate a point just by going into overtime. Even when they were just left at ties instead of OTLs, I always lumped them into “Win” or “Not A Win” categories. I know that getting 41 + wins is very difficult even with 30 teams of varying talent but winning more than half of the games could make for a decent standard to get into the playoffs. The Blues and Flames both had 40 Wins and 42 Not-A-Wins, and yet Montreal could get into the playoffs with 39 Wins and 43 Not-A-Wins as did Boston (which due to having more OTLs gave them more points)? Awarding a point for losing in overtime or due to a shootout throws it all off-kilter in terms of knowing the best teams are in there, but in the system’s defense, it also makes the race to the playoffs a little more exciting through adding teams who rallied late. Had it not been for the OTL points, we’d all probably we watching Washington vs. Chicago and I don’t think that anyone really wants that kind of burden.
So, the OTL points have their use in recharging the fans’ energy level at the end of the regular season, but the points can also hide coaching problems to the fans. If you look at pre-Payne the team was 17-23 in terms of Win vs. Not-A-Win. After Davis Payne took over, he got a record of 23 Wins vs. 19 Not-A-Wins. If he can keep the Wins vs. Not-A-Wins tally on the side of Wins, he’ll do okay. I also hope Payne will listen to Scott Mellanby if or when he he finds errors in the personnel roster. I think he will just based on the amount of insight Mellanby will bring from a long-time player’s perspective.
Anyway, here’s hoping for more wins and fewer not-a-wins for next year.

Liking the “Win v. Not-A-Win” system, since an OTL means the team could have gotten the two points but still lost out.
This seems to be a good pairing, though. Payne is a coaching genius, Mellanby is an experienced player. They’ll bounce ideas off each-other and make the Blues’ game work from both ends of the spectrum. This’ll do just fine.
Perhaps he’ll be the Chosen One, who descends from the heavens in a ball of light and fixes our damn powerplay.
Well, I used to listen to Mike Murphy on WSCR when I was working up in Chicago, and he was always coming up with new stats to look at the Cubs’ actual chances of getting to the World Series and better ways of rating players. My Win vs. Not-A-Win rating is similar, I guess… eh, maybe not.

Interesting how Lidstrom took a home team discount to stay put.
Granted, that home team discount amounted to about $2 mil, but still – he saved them from cap issues next season, which is more than anyone playing on the Blackhawks’d probably want to do. I’ve always liked Lidstrom – seems like a nice guy and a hell of a defenseman (though I agree with THN – I think Pronger’s better, at least as far as intangibles go). It’s just such a shame that he’s been with Detroit his whole career.

He’s a decent enough guy and has been a solid player for years, it’s just that his loyalty overpowered his good taste.

I don't think he really helped Detroit much at all.
In his prime, the $6 million figure would have been a huge discount. But at 40, it’s only a slight bargain, and it removes half of Detroit’s remaining cap space.
Capgeek says the Flying Tires have just under $6.5M left to spend. They need half a dozen forwards and another defenseman. They can add another $940K by buying out Chris Osgood. Oops, no they can’t, as his is an over-35 deal.
Helm and Abdelkader are RFAs; getting them signed is going to eat up most of the remaining cap. Then they’ll be off to scour the trash heaps for fourth-liners willing to play for the league minimum.
The Wings’ cap sitch isn’t nearly as desperate as Chicago’s, but it isn’t pretty either.
link game interesting

You can do that the other way, too.
Ford was a big-time anti-Semite and active in the America First movement to keep the US out of WWII:

The article is a sports roundup...
Full article here at the Philadelphia Daily News site shows that the police are searching a doctor’s house in response to the death of an LPGA golfer.
The sentence that contains Scott Mellanby’s name is about two sections down, and all it mentions is that he got hired as the assistant coach of the Blues and how he started with the Flyers. Two different stories all added into one column. No worries.

Listened to KMOX
hockey night tonight. Talked to Mellanby for about 15min. I didn’t realize that the Blues haven’t had a coach that was a forward for a long time. He will also be filling the role of not only a coach but that veteran leadership that isn’t on the ice with the Kariya and Walt gone.
He was considered by the Thrashers coaches more as a player-coach.
He stayed in St Louis because he has an autistic son and the area has some of the best schools and research in the country. He was very involved in getting MO to make insurance companies cover autism treatment.
Will be talking to Ben Bishop about 7:15

Does he still have an autism foundation?
I donated to it once but it kind of fell off the radar. The issue is near and dear to my heart as well

I think he does.
I ran into him in an elevator at Philips season before last when he was here doing some promotion for it… he was on the regular concourse with the fans – I think the guy was lost. I was proud, though, that people recognized him. We have a bad habit of not noticing our former players. Petr Bondra was sitting at the table next to me in the food court working on something – no one went up to him. Heck, I saw Mark Recchi munching on Chic-fil-a before a game one time completely alone. Why people who are overwhelmed by big market hockey don’t come here is beyond me – no one’ll ever talk to you again.
I was in line behind Don Waddell at the Starbucks, but I think there’s a different reason that people didn’t flock to him.

Not sure
There is still a live page at Mellanby Autism Foundation, but it doesn’t seem to have been updated since 2006
