Apparently according to Strickland, the Blues and Carlo Colaiacovo will probably part ways, though the Blues are his first choice. If he doesn't get the dough he wants, he'll be back is the impression that I get.

This does leave a roster spot open for a defenseman signing. I'm not expecting Gonchar or Volchenkov, but who the hell knows. If we really were in the Ballard race, then apparently we'd like to have another d-man from outside. Or, maybe the Montreal mafia infiltrated the front office in their quest to carry out that hit on Halak.

From the way it looks, Cola (who was rumored to be offered a 2-year contract with an annual salary at a little more than the $1.4 million he made last season) and Weaver (rumored to be offered a 1 year contract somewhere in the $800K range) are going to test the free agent market to see if they get better deals. This makes sense on their part, considering the two don’t have very solid places in the Blues’ future, with Cole and Pietrangelo probably making the roster in a couple seasons and taking up spots.

I’m fairly confident that they’ll come back. I appreciate that Carlo says his #1 team is the St. Louis Blues, and I hope the Blues manage to keep him. At the same time, I’d really like Weaver around for another season. Hope that happens in Free Agency.

But, But..

I like Cola, he was not as bad as Brewbot in the Defensive zone, and he put up points on the PP, he isn’t asking much, and unless you are going to have Pietrangelo AND Cole make the team this year, letting him walk doesn’t make much sense. Maybe they have their eyes on a fancy Free Agent out there.

In other transaction news...

remember how we all wanted Versteeg? He’s gone, per Mirtle, to the Leafs for Stalberg and two other guys.

It's a funny name.

Is Shitcago keeping anyone from last year besides Kane and Taves(don’t tell me how to spell it).

… unless they’re on the chopping block too. God, I guess NO ONE wants Huet. Wonder why.

As long as the Blues open two spots for promotion from Peoria,

… I’m okay with just about any other moves they make. I’m still pissed that Junland decided to puss off back to Europe, but I think that someone from Peoria should have gotten the press box/seventh d-man role last year. Instead, the Blues signed DinoSydor and kicked him upstairs once Pietrangelo was remanded back to juniors.

Sydor’s departure opens up one of the two needed slots. If the team isn’t going to buy out Captain Flatline (sigh), then one of Weaver or Colaiacovo has to go. I expected them to make a bigger push for Cola, since his absence would pretty much lock AP into the second-unit power play; but maybe they’re comfortable with that. Weaver is cheaper, but he’s a little more squeezed by the sheer number of non-offensive defensemen on this roster.

What I really DON’T want to see is the Blues letting Cola and Weaver go, signing two or three more warm bodies, and then telling all the kids to have fun in Peoria for another year. Defense takes longer to learn at the NHL level, and some of those kids need to start their development curves immediately if not sooner.

^^ This.

The Blues don’t have to have a team of rookies, but they don;t have to bury every kid that’s under 24 in Peoria, either.

no thanks, I can’t think of a worse move right now than wasting 5 mil in cap space on him for the next 5-6 years or whatever.

Yeah, because no one really wants 30 minutes of effective blueline defense in the playoffs.

Seriously, why would we EVER want that?!

Cola's a real soild guy

I’m going to be disappointed if we lose him. Decent in our zone, maybe he doesn’t have the greatest shot in the league, but he’s real creative, and probably one of the most underrated open-ice hitters in the game. Plus he’s shown WAY more durability than he did in Toronto.

Weaver’s good on the PK, but he’s just too small to really be anything more than a penalty killer. The guy has heart, though, and we seem to be lacking that sometimes (save for Oshie, Jackman, Backes, and a very select crew)

Strick Fuckland...

I’m to the point where I wouldn’t believe him if he told me the sky was blue.

When the Blues announce that they’ve been unable to reach an accommodation with Colaiacovo, then I’ll believe it. Strickland can keep his little “insider” stories.

Paul Martin

While I read his stuff constantly, I always take it for what it is- a BLOG on a NHL rumor site. But I really liked the idea of Martin coming here, which he recently mentioned.
