Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Per TSN's Scott Cullen, it's Simon Gagne to Tampa Bay for Matt Walker and a 4th.

Gagne costs money, too

The Blues don’t have any of that to spend.

Meh

I wouldn't say that

PCS is probably right, with Gagne being the one who decided where he was going. Gagne seems thrilled to be going to Tampa so I don’t think the Blues were even in on this.

Even then, do we really want Gagne? He’s $5M for one year before he becomes a UFA, has a history of concussions, and the only tradeable assets the Blues have are prospects. Sure, the Blues need an established-scorer, but I would rather them play the kids this year in top-line roles then see what the market has to offer in 2011. By then we’ll have money, we’ll know how well our players can perform, and we have the chance to acquire a goal-scoring player without having to give up chunks of our rebuilding effort.

by russkidan on Jul 19, 2010 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

This makes perfect sense, sir, but still...

There are still decent scoring forwards out there who won’t cost as much — in terms of assets or salary — as Gagne, and the Blues don’t appear to be doing diddly-shit.

Appearance — perception — is everything when you’re still trying to sell this product to a skeptical market. Making a splash at the draft in order to draft Tarasenko was great, but the buzz from that move has pretty much faded away amidst a sea of Cardinal red and a first-place ballclub.

The Blues are going to have to do something — soon — to get their name back in the papers, and give the fence-sitters a reason to buy tickets.

Gagne also had final say

If he didn’t want to come to St. Louis, it didn’t matter what the Blues offered.

While I can understand preferring Tampa -- oil spill and all -- to St. Louis...

…I can’t believe that the Blues couldn’t beat that offer and/or give Gagne a better reason to come here.

Tampa = rebuild in progress.

St., Louis = rebuild 90% done, team on verge of breakout.

Nice weather in Tampa aside, it’s a no-brainer from a hockey standpoint, IMO.

I sure hope that the Blues have something else cooking, because while I have confidence in the kids’ development and progress, I’d feel a hell of a lot better going into 2010-11 with a little more proven firepower up front…

He could go play with Stamkos

Or Oshie. I’d pick Stamkos 100 times out of 100.

by averagejoe on Jul 19, 2010 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe so...

…but it still baffles me that the Blues couldn’t / wouldn’t at least make an attempt to sweeten that deal.

Playing with Oshie — and Perron and Berglund and Johnson and Halak and Backes and Polak and Steen — isn’t so bad…

I know, for all we know, maybe the Blues did make a run at Gagne behind the scenes… but judging by the Blues’ activity (or lack of same) in the FA market to date, I’m not confident that management did anything but stand by with their collective thumbs up their collective asses on this one.

Blasphemy!

I understand the frustration. Tampa landed a highly skilled player for peanuts. The Blues need skill players, could have easily beat that offer, and got dick.

But PCS is right about one major point: Gange got to choose his destination. And, honestly, why wouldn’t he want to go to Tampa? Huge buzz around the team, top end offensive players, great weather, no income tax, maybe the best two other French-Canadian players in the league, the list goes on.

This isn’t a knock on St. Louis or the Blues, but I understand why Gagne would choose the Lightning.

by Manbones on Jul 19, 2010 4:45 PM CDT reply actions

It is crappy.

I would have loved to have seen Gagne in St. Louis. Take care of our goal scoring and veteran leadership problem in one fell swoop.

I too am a little scared putting the kids out there and just saying go. We need a sniper. I like Brad Boyes as much as the next guy, but if he can’t find his game along with some others its going to be another short season. I know the front office has said they are done via free agency but I really hope that’s not true. I understand wanting to stand and see what happens, but honestly I think we should go out and get someone. I’m a bit worried heading into the season here. I hope I’m proven wrong, but it worries me.

still daydreaming

of the blues trading a packaged deal, secretly involving Brewbot… for the rights to Bobby Ryan. if only my fantasy world was real life.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky was in a production of The King and I? Well anyway, before the show, Brasky chloroforms the entire cast, and slowly eats them in front of the audience for two hours. The production got pretty good reviews.

Gagne=DJ King+4th
Weaksauce all the way around but Gagne is in a contract year and probably wanted to bottom feed in the SE till his next contract.

He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.
