Want to Sign a Former Blue or Two? How about 20 of them?
Using tsn.ca's list of unrestricted free agents, and not counting players that were a part of the Blues' system last season, with the right contract language, an entire team of active players that were once property of the Blues could be yours for the right price.
Stanley Cup contenders? Hardly, but it would be a complete enough team to dress four lines of forwards, three defensive pairings, two nearly serviceable goalies, have two spare parts and another goalie in reserve.
Sign them all, and their new team will change their logo to the one that Big Walt is showing off.
Top line - Lee Stempniak (Phoenix)- Doug Weight (New York Islanders)- Bill Guerin (Pittsburgh)
Second Line- Dean McAmmond (New Jersey)- Craig Conroy (Calgary)- Pavol Demitra (Vancouver)
Energy/Checking Line- Yan Stastny (Vancouver)- Jamal Mayers (Calgary)- Ryan Johnson (Vancouver)
Fourth Line- Jeff Hoggan (Phoenix)- Mike Glumac (Montreal)- Glen Metropolit (Montreal)
Spare Forwards- John DiSalvatore (Minnesota)- Jeremy Yablonski (Ottawa)
Defense 1- Jay McKee (Pittsburgh)- Brendan Bell (Columbus)
Defense 2- Mike Van Ryn (Toronto- Injured and will not play in 2010-2011)- Rory Fitzpatrick (Florida)
Defense 3- Andy Wozniewski (Boston)- Shawn Belle (Montreal)
Goaltenders- Manny Legace (Carolina)- Patrick Lalime (Buffalo)- Chris Beckford-Tseu (Florida)
So who of these players, if any, would you like to see return? And you can forget about Stempniak coming back. The team made "news" by resigning Brad Winchester, what makes you think they'll win a bidding war for a 27 year old player that scored 28 goals last season.

How much of a "bidding war" IS there, really, for Dutchie's services?
I don’t see any reason why the Blues should not go after him. He’s not going to cost an arm and a leg, he’s a recognizable name here (I’m wearing my “Stempniak 12” t-shirt as I write this), he would be a shot-in-the-arm on offense, and is defensively responsible enough to play on any line.
Who wouldn’t like to see the McBackniaks put back together?

Maybe not the McBackniaks
But I’m sure the Blues could use him on the 3rd line and move Crombeen to the 4th. Hell, the guy scored 14 goals in 18 games with the Coyotes, 28 goals the entire last season, and would probably keep it going.. and at least the Blues would get SOMETHING out from the FA market.
If you were gonna re-sign Stempy...
… you’d have needed to get the timing right, and announce that signing at the same time you announced the Steen and Cola signings. And make sure you invited the Toronto media.

Not a free agent.
This is a listing of former Blues UFA’s.
St. Louis Game Time . . . I need another beer.
And I can also write things in 140 characters or fewer.

Err, UFA's that are former Blues.
Or something.

Hey, how about Stemper?
Wait. No.
Actually, that’s the only one there that I’d like to see come back. If we REALLY REALLY need vet leadership, Dougie Weight’d be ok but I thought that the Isles were going to try to re-sign him. If Demitra wouldn’t self destruct with owies, he’d be a fun Kariya pt. 2. Or was Kariya Demitra pt. 2, which would make Demitra… oh, hell, never mind.
I think re-signing Winchester might’ve been a bullet in our dreams of actually being productive.

Kariya fo sho wasn't Demitra part 2
Because Demitra, when he was here, didn’t suck the equivalent of three successive bags of dicks.

I would take Kariya for 2.5
Or I would have before we signed winny. Not sure we have the room now. The players on our roster really have no clearly defined roster spots. Our first and second line doesn’t really determine our 3 best offensive and next 3 best offensive players as much as it does which 3 guys are playing well with each other right now. Our 4th line is pretty clear but we have the problem with our 3rd line where some guys will clearly be grinders and some will be scorers. Our roster is honestly a bit of a mash.
Also Stempniak.
He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.
Just because Jay McClement is the best defensive forward in the NHL doesn't mean he should win the Selke.
With any luck
They signed Winny, because he and Brewer are some part of a trade deal to bring in another D-man. Or a bag of used pucks. Or a plate of hot-wings. I love hot wings…..
Barret Jackman is my hero.
Fueled. These new shores burn. Shadow, my sweet shadow, to you I look no more.
They need to call hot wings something else...
…like how they renamed sauerkraut “liberty cabbage” during WWII
…because I just can’t enjoy anything called “wings.”
Call ’em “chicken snacks” or “hot legs” or something.
Then again, chicken wings and Detroit Red Wings do have something in common… they’re both pretty much useless appendages.

I loved Billy G in his less than one season here
One more would be nice, maybe…we need a little help on the wing.
