Monday links: Hoping the party starter starts the party in 2010-11 edition
Some people may disagree on the awesomeness of Friday, but I think we can all agree Monday's suck. Oh well, back to the grind.
Blues news
- After a poor showing last season, Patrik Berglund is working hard to improve this year. He's still young, but I think 2010-11 might be a make-or-break year for him. [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]
Hockey news
- Defending Big D picks the Top 5 NHL jerseys. Spoiler alert: The Blues "alternate" that the team wears way too much is on the list. [Defending Big D]
- Copper and Blue looks at faceoffs. [The Copper & Blue]
- Ryan Lambert covers twitter, and the blogger/access kerfufle. He pretty much echos my thoughts. Teams are wrong to have blanket statements to ban websites. However any hack with a url shouldn't expect access. As a journalist, I have to work my way up to bigger assignments. Bloggers should do the same thing. Longevity, ability, and yes readership should go into account when credentialing blog. Teams shouldn't ban websites, but all blogs shouldn't be given access. [Puck Daddy]
- Lee Stempniak is staying in Arizona. The Coyotes got a freaking steal with a two-year deal for Dutchie. [TSN]
- Speaking of Phoenix, things still suck there as far as ownership and whatnot. [ESPN]
- Sam Gagner gets the David Perron "prove it" two-year deal.[TSN]

3rd Jersey
I like our third jersey and don’t mind us busting it out but I have a few aesthetic problems with it. The blue is way too dark when I see them wear it on the ice, it looks like an off black rather than a dark blue. The layout is really nice, the color, the numbers, name font, the collar etc. All thats good except I don’t like the crest much, it looks too artificial and cheap to me, like someone literally took a stamp and just pounded it on there. I dont like the yellow thats mixed in there I think, the yellow looks sort of cheap and frames it poorly. Also the arch is hard to see.

He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.
Just because Jay McClement is the best defensive forward in the NHL doesn't mean he should win the Selke.
You can't lighten the 3rd jersey uniform too much.
Otherwise the gold won’t stand out boldly. I’d rather that they keep it darker so as to differentiate it from the regular home colors.
Also, if the logo designers darken the arch too much then they’ll have to show all the dents in it made when David Backes was slapping curling stones at it for his mid-breakfast slapshot practice.

You must have a shitty TV.
It’s pretty obviously blue, from where I sit.
I’m with you on the rest though. Color & layout is great, but the crest needs some work. Personally, I’d take off the outside ring with the “St. Louis Blues” and just blow up the central portion. I’d darken the Arch a couple shades, and scoot the ‘Note to the left a few clicks so the top right corner doesn’t overlap onto the gold rim like it does now. And maybe make that rim just a uniform yellow, like the piping on the numbers. Simplify the design a bit.
But overall I love the 3rds, and am not sure why so many people bitch about us wearing them when they’re pretty much universally admired around the league.
I really like it
my only problem is the bluenote touching the trim on one side, but thats not something that can really be fixed because of the shape of the bluenote and how disproportionate one that would fit sideways across but not so much within the circle as a whole. As someone saide above, getting rid of the yellow rim would do this just fine i would think

Call me a dirty communist
but I dislike the 3rd uni entirely. I’d rather see them roll with these:

Go to your history before you make something new, I say, but the current alternates are better than nothing.

I don't mind the Beer Coaster sweaters.
I like ‘em a lot better than the RBK-designed primaries. But the RBKs are the second-worst design in team history*, so that’s not saying a lot.
I’d love to see the team ditch the RBKs and make room for a retro-styled sweater like the one above, or the 1990-era model. The Beer Coasters could take a turn as the primary, with the retro as the 3rd, or vice versa. It would all be good.
* – second-worst design that actually hit the ice. The less said about that abomination printed in the pages of Note By Note, the better.
I just found that sweater.
My God, what did the Blues do to deserve being threatened with that abomination?

Good lord
How did Phoenix manage to get Stempy for $1.75mil? Did no one make any offer for him?
I figured he’d make closer to $2.5. And if they got him for that why didn’t we get him for that?
Oh, because we threw money at Worthless Winny
I agree, the 3rd jersey is just a little bit to dark of a blue. It took awhile for it to grow on me but now I really like it.
The horse race call is an instant classic. And yes, they came in just as they should. Remember guys, The Wife Knows Everything, much more than The Wife Doesn’t Know.

Old Time Hockey? You little punks wouldn't know Old Time Hockey if it speared you in the yarbles.
Oh god yea
tampa’s jerseys still look like practice sweaters
Dallas’ actually ain’t ALL that bad, I agree its better than the little number near the shoulder.
Philly’s is terrible, they look like they’re wearing short-sleeves out there
I like LA’s. A lot of people don’t, but I think they’re sharp as hell. That being said, where the hell does Art get the idea purple doesn’t belong on jerseys? I mean, the old Kings sweaters are real crisp,
And I challange ANYONE to tell me the WHA’s Cleveland Crusaders’ sweater ain’t the nicest thing you’ve ever seen:

not to mention our thirds
The crest needs to stay the bluenote, nothing else. The striping needs to be a bit more even, too.
not to mention we need to wear them less

Depends.
Were they good luck or bad luck for us last season? Anyone remember our record when we wore the 3rds?

According to SLGT in print from last year
we were 4-7-3 with the thirds.
PC Load Letter? What the fuck does that mean?
Hm.
Yeah, cut back on the wearage.

i cant believe it was only 15 games
it seems like they wore them every game i watched.

Like everything, it improved later in the year
At one point we were 1-6-1 in the thirds, including the win in Sweden. I posted somewhere (here?) that the issue with the start last year was the 3rd jersey. Must employ google ninja skillz to check….

I still say...
Bergie has the most untapped potential of the young guys. Every now and then he shows flashes that show that he has the ability to absolutely control the offensive flow. He just needs to not be invisible 85% of the time.
I’m hoping for a 30G-30A season from him.
Realistically, I see him getting back to his rookie line—something like 20G-25A.
I think he should recover.
He’s not skating with his tail between his legs anymore, so that should help him out a bit.

So in this analogy..
Should the full Berglund-keg (which may prove to be filled with some of the best beer on the team) be moved so the warm, near-empty Winchester-keg can get some use?

ive said it for a while now
in a few years berglund will either be a top-6 forward with the blues putting up 50-80 points a season … or hell be in sweden. hes got a ton of potential, but if he doenst put it together, i se him going back home.

I agree with this
I do think that he will be able to put it together though, so hopefully the return to Sweden won’t be an issue.
