Blues Send Down Seven, Waive Hensick. Roster Now At 30
The Blues announced this afternoon that defensemen Dean Arsene and Brennan Evans as well as forwards Adam Cracknell, Graham Mink, Ryan Reaves, Brett Sonne and David Spina have all been sent down (geographically up) to Peoria.
None of these cuts were unexpected and the battle for the last defensive spots seems to still be raging among Nikita Nikitin, Alex Pietrangelo, Ian Cole and Tyson Strachan.
Among the forwards Nick Drazenovic, Dave Scatchard and Chris Porter seem to be battling for the open slot that will be Vladimir Sobotka's when he returns from his shoulder surgery.
Ben Bishop's excellent pre-season play has earned him some additional time in camp, at the very least. Allowing one goal in two complete games seems to have gotten him some attention from the staff, though the Blues are unlikely to keep him, Ty Conklin and Jaroslav Halak on the pro roster when Bishop still has AHL eliginility and won't have to pass through waivers to go down (up) to Peoria.
There is rumor that T.J. Hensick has been placed on waivers by the Blues, but that has not been confirmed on their site and he is not listed by TSN's comprehensive list of waiver wire casualties.

my question: why did they waive him if he hasn’t been reassigned?

I think he has to pass through waivers to get re-assigned.
Atlanta sent down their two AHL goalies and they had to clear waivers. There was talk of the Wild(s) grabbing one thanks to Boyes breaking Harding, but I think they made it through unscathed.

he does have to clear waivers, but I didn’t think he needed to clear before they could reassign him. maybe they are just doing this now in case he doesn’t make the team for opening night?

Scatchard
Didn’t he spend the whole night in the penalty box last night? Why would he be in the mix?
