ST. LOUIS MO - JANUARY 10: Lee Stempniak #22 of the Phoenix Coyotes scores a goal against Jaroslav Halak #41 of the St. Louis Blues at the Scottrade Center on January 10 2011 in St. Louis Missouri. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images)

As a goalie sympathizer, I'm usually the last to admit that something was entirely the goalie's fault. However, 2 soft goals in the 3rd makes for pretty easy analysis as to what was needed to ensure a Blues victory. 1st period saves were great, but if you can't make the simple saves, winning just gets that much harder.

Blues News:

  • Blues lose. *Your favorite swear word here* [LKorac]
  • Let's check Rutherford, SHIT! Yep, Blues still lost. [Post-Dispatch]
  • Maybe Stempniak convinced the Coyotes blog to give us a sympathy point over the internet. Alright, now I'm really grasping at straws. [Five For Howling]
  • AP Recap here [Post-Dispatch]

NHL News:

  • Chris Osgood is out for about a month and a half with a groin injury. [Puck Daddy]
  • Coyotes were busy yesterday. Not only did they win on the road, they sent Wojtek Wolski, league leader in W's that aren't pronounced like W's, to the Rangers for Michal Roszival. This trade may or may not have broken spellcheck. [Five For Howling]
  • The Rangers blog came up with a Fanpost detailing the trade negotiations that's on par with some of the One Act Theatre you find around here. [Blueshirt Banter]
  • The "Worldwide Leader" figures out who won the trade. As much shit as I give ESPN for how they cover hockey and feature it so rare compared to the other sports, I at least give them kudos for employing guys like LeBrun who sure as hell know what they're doing. [ESPN]
  • Back to spellcheck breaking names, Tom Kostopoulos's hit, and the resulting discipline, has sparked plenty of debate about the interwebz. [Puck Daddy]
  • Both lament the way Campbell went about this. I'd expect more rule changes about physical play over the off-season. [Canucks Corner]
  • Scores. [TSN]

Other Stuff:

  • Since the guy's a Ravens fan, I imagine I'm supposed to hate UWWildthing. And yet, when he keeps bringing the links like he does (good ones, at that), I just can't bring myself to despise him. [Fox]
  • More coverage of a great tackle football run. Sports and video game culture together? Sign me up. [Guyism]
  • This is how most of my cuisine is prepared. [CollegeHumor]

Video:

Here we have Jaro's 3rd period message to goaltender fundamentals expressed in sign language.

Stay around for some all-star game musings from Bradley Leigh Lee.

Now back to nursing my troubles with booze. See you all tomorrow.

What was that on the right side of the video?

On a side note, am I the only one getting tired of that song?

Nope...

I love that song… with a passion…

But then again, I don’t have a TV, and I don’t listen to the radio much…

I thought that was a pretty cool video none-the-less.

Considering

the sheer number of games that Halak has kept us in combined with the fact that we would not be where we are in the Conference without him, I’ll give him a pass tonight. The rest of the team have had far more bad games than he has. It can’t be easy – he seems to be expected to haul the teams collective arses out of whatever mess they’ve got in practically every game.

There are other members of the team that need to be called out – EJ for instance. Not a great season for him so far.

Note to self: Do NOT go to the asylum then come here. It’s not good for my health or sanity – my god, it’s called the asylum for a reason….

kind of agree

on Jaro, completely agree on EJ. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve had sustained pressure in the zone on 5X5 or PP, bring it back to the point, and the puck somehow hops over EJ’s stick. Where’s the player who simply dominated during the Olympics? He was just so solid in Vancouver, playing 30 minutes a game in every situation, and using his size to overpower other players.

Ugh, it’s just getting old watching us completely outplay a team for one period, then watch us shit the bed in the next period.

It also isn't the amount of chances against Jaro.

He has actually mentioned that he plays better when he faces more shots.

The problem is that we give up extremely quality chances waaaay too much.

I thought....

We were getting a goalie who would finally bring sound fundamentals to the Blues crease. Meh. I’ll actually give him a semi pass on Turris’ goal. The defenseman screened him out pretty good. Either knock the man down, block the shot, or get the fuck out of the way. The 4th goal… horrible. Bad communication, bad form, bad goal. The only silver lining is that he has traditionally been a post-All Star break stud goalie. This month-to-month inconsistency is infuriating.

EJ… Petro has spoiled us. 20 year old rookie defensemen (no matter what the NHL says) aren’t supposed to look that composed and make so few mistakes. Having said that, EJ has shown enough to tease at the promise of his ceiling, but not really delivered on it consistently, and not at the level of a #1 pick, consensus top defenseman in the draft.. Kinda like another guy we had and wish had never left. The quandry is how long the Blues want to wait on him. The Whalers didn’t wait long enough for Pronger, and they weren’t exactly one player away from a Cup.

Last night’s mistake was a rookie mistake, but he isn’t one. The correct play would have been to dump it in the corner. No shot, and the only man up high—keep it in the zone, keep the pressure on. He could have used someone to tell him Stempniak was chasing him down on the blind side. A forward should have rotated out high much sooner. BUT EJ needs that alarm clock in his head, the same kind that good NFL quarterbacks have that says “play’s dead, throw the ball away NOW.” instead of taking a sack or throwing an interception. NHL defenseman is as much cerebral as it is physical. If you don’t got the brains to play the position, then you’re a marginal second-pair at best. It’s hard to evaluate.

on Turris’ goal

Someone mentioned Halak didn’t even wave at the puck and looked like he was anticipating it going wide and was letting it go. Someone at the game said Halak never saw it. Who do you believe? His numbers for the last 2 months are Masonesque after a hot start. Last year and in the early part of this year Halak plucked hard and high shots off of thin air. Now I grimace when someone lifts one on him. It’s fugly. I say hypnotize his azz and find the short circuit.
