Wednesday Links: Mourning Kyle Wellwood Edition

Backes may not have touched the puck here, but he gets credit for scaring the puck into the net by way of verbal abuse. That's not an officially kept stat, by the way, but feel free to start recording such instances. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images)

Just kidding. OSHIE!!!!!!one!!!!

Blues News:

  • The Blues lost Kyle Wellwood to the Sharks. [Post-Dispatch]
  • JD with some well-spoken criticism: You can't fault the teams for taking advantage of the rules. You can sure as hell call the rule into question, though. [TSN]
  • But in other news, OSHIE! Blues win! [Post-Dispatch]

NHL News:

  • Ben Eager, who is still in the league, has been dealt to the Sharks. When you want to bring a guy who has a Stanley Cup championship on his resume, Eager has to be near the bottom of the wish list. [Birdwatchers Anonymous]
  • Fear the Fin looks at their new toys. [Fear the Fin]
  • If Eric Staal or Nick Lidstrom swing by the blogosphere, here's some tips on how to pick your all-star squad. [Down Goes Brown]
  • With captains picked, Wysh looks at how Staal/Lidstrom might shake out in the player draft. [Puck Daddy]
  • The player/blogger portion of Puck Daddy looks at getting "cute" and how it can drive a coach up a wall. The line "Nice catch, Hayes. Don't ever fuckin' do it again," comes to mind. [Puck Daddy]

Other Stuff:

  • Yet another reason Snuggies are among the worst things ever. [Break]
  • I'm always on the lookout for my fellow college students. Here's a handy way to find out how much caffeine it takes to kill you. So, obviously, drink one less than that and you should be good to study all night. You're welcome. [Energy Fiend]
  • At least you're family isn't this weird. [Slightly Warped]
  • Alternative methods of home security. Now that's thinking outside the box. Or it might be just thinking inside your own home. Whatever. [Bug Comic]

Video:

CCR has had this one stuck in his head for a while. Now you will, too.

When more is known about the Colaiacovo injury, I'm sure it'll surface somewhere in the comments or in the Fanshots section.

Until then, be ready for some more Ian Cole or Tyson Strachan sightings.

I think..

The most BS part about it is that the Sharks are ahead of us in the standings. I can understand a team below us getting the claim, but it’s asinine that signing a player equates to losing our place in the waiver line.

As much as getting poached sucks

I’d take Oshie back over Wellwood. I agree with above though. I think its ridiculous for someone else to get a player if they are above you in the standings. I think it should be the same as any other waiver wire pick up. If the contract is in place then you should have to give either draft picks or cash in return. I’m not to upset about them signing Wellwood, but still, twice? That’s just stupid. I would say the rule needs to be revised.

So I made one helluva trade today......

In another league Im in I traded Joe Thornton, Brian Gionta, and Tyler Myers for Steven Stamkos and Lord Backes…….now Ive got Crosby and Stamkos on the same team…..I should be able to take all the offensive stats once Crosby gets back from his head case…..cause we all know Commisioner Butthead isnt going to let his cash cow miss the rest of the season….

I still maintain Vladimir Konstantinov got what he deserved...If you can't handle that then kiss my ass......

Dear Dan O'Neill...

If there’s any family of Blues fans who remind their children to ask God to bless the L.A. Kings when they pray, tell us who they are… because they’re criminally neglecting their kids.

thye wellwood rule

jd would be mistaken to criticize the rule. the gm’s and owners never play fair and this rule is an attempt to close a large backdoor hole.

imagine two things:

a) the devils make the playoffs

b) they got the rights to several players and stuck em in the k. the day playoff rosters are to be set, magically the devils have a full team with 4 or 5 legit players having a cap hit of $1.98

i believe jeffio (for those who know him) likes to refer to this as the “Glenn Anderson” rule.

no team should gain exclusive rights to players at the trade deadline or at the playoff roster freeze deadline unless all teams had a legit shot.

remember wellwood was NOT available, until he wanted to be available, meaning the blues were doing some scott stevian handshaking to get him lined up and confident enough to leave the k.

the reason the blues can DO that to start with is all the other teams know they will get to drink from the blues wellwood before he wears a note.

Surely you're not implying that the Blues did anything underhanded.

The signing of Scott Stevens was a blatant circumvention of free-agency rules. Its only relation to the Wellwood signing is that both men are hockey players.

Wellwood was released from his KHL team long on January 6. Rumors about his signing with STL didn’t surface until the 13th. You’re not really asking people to believe that the Blues engaged in some lengthy intercontinental conspiracy to orchestrate the illicit transfer of a player, are you? Because if you are, my response is “Dude, it’s Kyle Wellwood”.

not at all

HOWEVER if the waivers where not in place the scott stevens rules likely would, a

nd which is better for the blues? doing everything they can and not getting wellwood or doing everything they can and not getting first round picks for 73 years?
