Remember when everyone wanted the blues to bet the farm on Ilya and he chose to get a bogus totally legitimate deal done with the Devils. And that was it, no one heard from him or them again because they're terrible. I checked out his stats today and...phew.

Compare that to any current blue who's played the whole year

I hate Brad Boyes, ok...I HATE him. Even his streaky, won't take a shot unless it's a one timer delivered perfectly douche ass is just as productive as Ilya. You gotta get to our non scoring defensemen and 4th liners to get a player who isn't comparable to this douche. Bust?

You have to remember though

The ENTIRE Devils team is in a free fall. Its easy to look at the Kovie contract and call that the problem, but again its everyone in Jersey.

While the contract is ridiculous (101 mil or whatever it is is INSANE!!) you can’t blame it on all on Kovie. Whats to say he wouldn’t be different had we signed him. He could be on pace for 40 goals. I’m not doubting you and its good to them get screwed for making such a stupid move, I don’t think you can blame that entirely on his contract signing.

definitely not a bust

a bust for the first year of this deal? yes. but the guy’s a bona fide 40-goal scorer. He’s done it for about a decade. He’s not just going to fall off the map, and I can tell you for certain it sure wasn’t the plethora of talent surrounding him in Atlanta that got him all his goals.

right now the devils are in a miserable state. they’ll start to regroup eventually — maybe not this year. but when they do, and if they don’t try to constrain kovalchuk to their stupid marty brodeur-based system now that brodeur looks cooked, kovy will start scoring again.

can’t compare his devils numbers to players on our team because we really don’t know how he would have done here. i’d be willing to bet he’d have scored 20 goals by now and would be a minus-5, rather than a minus-30 (really, he is minus-30 with the devs).

I’m not sure who “everyone” is but I think on here posters were about 40% For and 60% Against. I could be wrong but it was definitely quite a bit more were against. Hildy had some great insight to sway people with first hand knowledge.
I would’ve never expected -30 though. What’s the record in a season? Maybe he can get that.
For a nanosecond I felt a tiny bit sorry for the Devils, than I realized what happened and quickly corrected myself. I do have to feel bad for the fans though. They’re people spending hard earned money like us and we know how it’s been in the 2000’s.
