WUT? NEW RULE ON SCRUMS

So I'm watching the Duck's game the other night and there is a scrum in the end boards and the 3 forwards are getting roughed up by the other team's 5 players. The PBP guy says the 2 Dmen can't go in past the top of the face off circles to help their 3 forwards getting mauled or the faceoff goes to the other end. I was dumbfounded, never heard of this BS rule. Please tell me my hearing aid batteries were on the fritz cuz that shit is ridiculous if true.

If this is a rule rather than the officials simply trying to police the situation . . .

I have three words: FUCK. THAT. NOISE.

But yeah, it’s more likely the officials were trying to keep the situation from getting out of hand. And even then, there are issues. Odd shit.

Never heard of that rule before

I checked up on it though: Article 76.2, Paragraph 11

Following a stoppage of play, should one or both defensemen who are the point players or any player coming from the bench of the attacking team, enter into the attacking zone beyond the outer edge of the end zone face-off circle during an altercation, gathering or "scrum," the ensuing face-off shall take place in the neutral zone near the blue line of the defending team. This rule also applies when an icing, an intentional off-side, or a high-sticking the puck violation (by the team of greater numerical strength of its opponent) has occurred, and the ensuing face-off is to be in the offending team’s defending zone. Should any of the non-offending players enter into the attacking zone beyond the outer edge of the end zone face-off circle during an altercation, gathering or "scrum," the ensuing face-off shall take place in the neutral zone near the blue line of the defending team.

Not sure when it was added, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen this rule exercised before. Very weird.

Thanks russkidan for the legwork on finding the rule. That recent game was the first time I heard it mentioned.

This is not the issue.

That is following a stoppage of play. In this situation, the defensemen ARE allowed in provided they were already on the ice to begin with (which, in this situation, appears to be the case).

And in that case, a misinterpretation of the rules further tells you how fucked NHL officiating really is. Because, presumably, the opposing team’s defensemen are already part of the scrum. Fucked as shit.

I’m not sure if I’d shake Gary Bettman’s hand or kick him in the balls (presuming he has any) if I ever met him. He has turned the NHL into Assfuck Central.

The dmen in the game were already on the ice at the blue line and DID NOT enter the scrum

The reason why is what my post in about DK. They stood and watched as their forwards got mauled in the corner. I was shreiking WTF? when the PBP guy explained why they had to hold back. Icouldn’t believe what I was hearing.

FUCK YOU BETTMAN and the rest of your goofy rule makers. The NHL should just skip this back door BS and just come out and finally ban fighting and scrums. Call it “Touch Hockey” like it really is now and be done with the facade. Hockey has changed, it no longer is the game I grew up with and know.

For having to take an offensive zone face off for it, you’d better believe I’d be in there mauling someone trying to take out my forward. Asses would be kicked liberally and in good measure. That is just a ridiculous rule. Absolutely stupid.
