Blue Öystrick Cult to reappear in St. Louis

The Blues today called up defenseman Nathan Oystrick from Peoria, to take the place of Nikita Nikitin in the lineup.

Per Dave Eminian in the Peoria Journal-Star, Oystrick was hit with a six-game suspension by the AHL today. The suspension comes as a result of Oystrick's leaving the bench last Friday in a game against Chicago in order to fight the Wolves' Ryan Garbutt. Garbutt had checked Peoria's Brett Sonne in the head, rousing Oystrick's anger.

Garbutt received a two-game suspension from the AHL for the check to Sonne's head.

The suspension is frozen while Oystrick is on callup to the NHL, and will begin once Oystrick is returned to Peoria. The Rivermen have 12 regular-season games left to play in a tight playoff race (see Eminian article above), and if Oystrick is not returned until the playoffs begin, he would have to sit out of the playoffs until he reaches six games.

Per the Eminian story...

…it’s plausible that the Rivermen could finish with more points that the division leader in the AHL North Division, and yet still miss the playoffs.

No more than five teams from any division, apparently, can be placed in the playoffs, which means that at least two teams from the AHL North will get in even though they will likely have fewer points that than sixth and seventh teams in the AHL West.
