The big (6 '3, 218 pounds) defenseman is a native of Rochester, New York, and was the Blues' sixth-round pick (168th overall) in 2009. He is mainly a stay-at-home type of defenseman, although he does have some offensive upside. Despite his excellent size, Shields is not particularly physical, although he will take onrushing forwards out of the play and finish his checks along the boards.
Shields' Erie Otters club finished the 2010-11 season as the fifth seed in the Ontario League's Western Conference, and begin the OHL playoffs tomorrow night against two-time defending OHL and memorial Cup champion Windsor. He will likely report to Peoria on a pro tryout (PTO) contract once his OHL playoff run has ended.
