2011 Team Stats
So I was looking at some stats at behindthenet.ca a few days ago and wanted to post some of the things I look for here to kind of see what we had and what we're getting. I usually look at qualcomp to see whos playing the tough minutes but its a somewhat flawed statistic. They are talking about it over at the now winnipeg site formerly behind the net here on sbn. If you are unaware theres a stat called corsi which is based off shots your team takes and shots the opponents team takes while your on the ice. Having your team direct more while the opponent less is obviously good and corsi measures that. Qualcomp is based off corsi but it doesnt really factor in stuff like zonestart so a guy who only plays offense like the sedins/Kane will have high qualcomp because they basically only start in the offensive zone and obviously having a better offensive chance while being defensively weak while a guy like mcclement will have a low qualcomp rating but will be a strong defensive player. So after qualcomp I look at zonestart to see whos being used in what situation to get a more accurate picture. This is what I put together to look at some of our players.
Explanation.
Qualcomp: Like I mentioned its a somewhat flawed stat but it does show who good offensive players are and its actually probably best used when you only compare it among players on a certain team. For instance Backes had the highest qualcomp. Was he facing the other teams top players? I say yes. Reaves and Janssen had the lowest and they were most likely facing goons. So its good in that regard.
Ozone% : What perceantage of your faceoffs were taken while you were in the offensive zone compared to the defensive zone. The league average falls between 40-60% in the vast majority of cases and 50 is pretty much where people are at. If you see a guy with 60 hes only being used offensively or being sheltered and 40 means hes a defensive stopper.
FinOzone% : Where the next faceoff was taken. The best way they could think of to see if you moved play out of the defensive zone or kept it by the opponents net. Obviously this stat could be flawed based on line changes and long back and forth play but it does show whos driving play in the right direction.
G/60 : Goals per 60 minutes of ice time. The first absolute stat. Instead of just asking how many goals a guy put up in a season it factors in his ice time to see if someone is just scoring a ton because hes on the ice a lot.
A/60 : Assists per 60 minutes of ice time. This is PRIMARY assists and not just the regular assist stat, it only looks at who touched the puck right before the goal scorer instead of the last 2. I personally just think its more accurate to see who made the assist happen.
Shooting% : Even strength shooting percent. If you look at NHL.com Stewarts shooting is like 22.6 or something. This has him listed as 9.6. NHL shows both powerplay and 5on5 in the same statistic while this is just 5v5. Stewy was a powerplay monster and just pretty good 5v5.
On Ice sv%: Your teams save percent while you are on the ice. A pretty damn good way of seeing if youre letting your opponent get quality scoring opportunities or if youre keeping opponents to the edge.
All stats are for the 2010-2011 season and all are 5v5 with no special teams factored in. I might look at that later if everyone wants me to. Only looking at guys who played 20 games or more and obviously some switched teams so its gonna be slightly skewed but you understand.

My thoughts
Brewer faced a pretty some of the highest qualcomp, moved the puck forward with zonestart and had the highest on ice save% while still putting up good points. He was our best D man.
The last sentance was made without regard to Ian cole whos stats look almost NHL worthy, he has good qualcomp, good save% and his zonestarts arent bad for a rookie, they are usually really sheltered.
Strachan kinda sucked pretty bad.
Petro and Shatty are still getting some sheltered minutes and their zone finish is dropping a bit lower than they should but that will improve.
Oshie is an assist machine.
Iceburgs stats are still pretty weak, will have to see how well he fares next year.
Backes and Happy meal are real monsters when it comes to qualcomp, defensive play and scoring.
Arnott can still score well enough but hes losing a few steps, langs is a bit behind him.
Husk/nicol face some pretty easy competition but their puck possession and defensive stats are damn fine, they were good pickups for bottem line guys.
Backes and Stewarts shooting perceantage is high(10%) but not so much that you wouldnt expect it to be there next year as well. The best shooters in the league only do it at about a 13% pace so if you got a guy shooting at 17 like Perron was to start the season they would regress back down to average. Backes and Stewart shooting at 10% just means they are good players.
All the stats I grabbed came from behindthenet.ca so much thanks to them.

great post
i like this stat break down alot. sure does look like nichol and huskins are great depth guys. and forget Reaves as a goon, get him in the top 6!
I know he didn't play up to his contract
but when you look at boyes he had some great stats. In pretty much every category he was near the top of the group.
Now I feel vindicated
constantly defending him in the GDT’s last season
I would have swallered a whole bag of pills
if I heard “Boyes shoots wide” one more time last year. I was that close
Just a chew toy for the hockey gods
What are these facts about Brewer doing well?
Does this mean he was not the harbinger of death?
No beer and no TV make Homer...something something.

I was just telling someone yesterday
how great Brewer played last year. I’m happy to see him gone, but I think he had one of, if not the best, year of his career.
