Ian Cole has been suspended three games for his hit on Justin Abdelkader.
I can't say that I'm surprised. I saw the hit in a bar last night and figured he was due for a Shanaban. However, after a few recent decisions by the Dept. of Player safety, including ignoring the Pavel Datsyuk on Barret Jackman, I thought Cole may escape with a fine or a game.
The Blues now have just five healthy d-men on the NHL roster. Look for someone like Cade Fairchild to get the call soon, unless Kent Huskins magically is healed overnight. Or maybe the Blues can borrow Taylor Chorney from the Oilers for three games.

While I wasn't here on the blog
I was watching the game at my parents house during a rousing game of dominoes.
Mr Depends and I both commented at the same time ‘a Shanaban is coming’.
We both thought 1-2 games though.

After thinking about it
This is pretty shitty.
Raffi Torres has a suspension history and has hit three questionable hits in three CONSECUTIVE games and come away with nothing. Chris Stewart blatantly boarded Nik Kronwall and got three games.
This hit was not good, but how you gonna tell me that the Stewie 5-min and a gamer equates to a 2-min minor? He didn’t elbow him. He shouldered him in the head—again, not a good play, but not worthy of three games.
Shanny started off strong, but once again the NHL is throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks.
I figured just a game'd suffice.
You know, to send a message. But when you have repeat offenders getting fined for things that’re worse, and this getting three games… that’s excessive. Yeah, it was high – regardless of if it was unintentional or not – but three games for a first offender? That’s a bit hard core.

Even as a Wings fan
3 games is way more than I was expecting. I thought he’d get 1 or it would max out at 2

i dont think being a wings fan or blues fan
matters in this. as a hockey fan, im confused about the return of the wheel of justice. its silly punishment that doesn’t fit the crime. a game would be about right. two would send a message. three? thats a wee bit overbarod.
If the standard set in preseason where Brendan Smith got five for a hit similar in severity to this one had been upheld throughout the season, I’d say 3 would have been right in line.

Shanny is a wing.
This isn’t surprising at all. Make sure the NHL fans know that their money teams are being well protected. The last two suspensions given by Shanny before the Cole hit were for two and three games and both hits were much worse than Cole’s. Oh well. No use wondering about the intentions of the NHL. We just need to get good so we can get some of this treatment like Pitts, Wash, Chi, Boston, and Detwat get. All in all, Fuck Detwat and fuck Chi.
Good shoulder hit and they do what?
What are they doing to our beloved game?
NHL is now FHL
Just a chew toy for the hockey gods
what are they doing?
maybe making it safer to play?
It wasn’t a good shoulder hit. ANY hit to the head is, by definition, a bad hit. Cole missed his spot, and as a result, has to sit a few. I don’t like it, but I can accept it.
I find it remarkable that the League is making a 3-game suspension out of a 2-minute minor. That’s odd – that is essentially the League saying that the on-ice crew blew the call entirely. Usually, the League backs up the officials completely.

One of the reasons
I love watching it is because you know if some goof admires the puck across the blue line someone will knock them smooth the fuck out. Or at least it used to be that way. Now I see calls the leave the Women’s Rotary Club shaking their heads. This Shanaban stuff is for the birds. YOu don’t want your cuckoo clock chiming keep your head up and don’t get caught in the trolley tracks. We’re breeding a bunch of no hit players who spin their back when near the boards. Freaking ridicuous. More safe? stay the fuck home and play chess. Hockey without violence and KTFO hits is not hockey anymore.
Just a chew toy for the hockey gods
you know...
There is a huge difference between someone laying someones ass out on the ice and hitting the head that significantly increases the likelihood someones cuckoo clock of becomeing scrambled eggs. Pre lockout there were tons of big hits, but far fewer concussions (granted some of that is due to increased awareness now) due to hits to the head.
Bring on the the hits that lay someones ass out and knocks the wind out of them, but big hits/elbows (i’m looking at you Pavel D.)/knees/shoulders to the head gotta go away. If you want a faster pace of play with more open passing like we have without to the two line pass, the more you gotta crack down on potential career ending and long term injury causing hits to the head.

There's always been KTFO hits
In the olden daze they just told the player to “walk it off”. Fuck it’s hockey, you have big men going fast and colliding. Anybody here take physics? It’s that simple, bodies in motion tend to stay in motion until running into a big oak tree, or some shit like that. I was too busy staring at Susan P.s chest to remember my theorums. If you truly don’t want concussed players put governors on their azzes, wrap them in bubble wrap and enjoy whatever you want to call that nonsense, it ain’t hockey though.
Just a chew toy for the hockey gods
So lets make this simpler...
You would rather see a person; someones father, son, husband, and brother; get hurt, have their career ended/brain turned to mush where they cant remember the last 3 years because you dont want to tell everyone else out on the ice “Hey watch out for hitting other guys head”
Had Cole dropped his shoulder six inches he wouldnt have tagged Abdlkaders head and laid his ass out and probably would have kept him off the ice for a shift while he got his breath back after being run the fuck over.
Its the same difference as when I’m out on a racetrack and someones poking the nose of their car in next to me on the inside, I generally know he’s there (theres mirrors for a reason) but I’m not going to turn into him and possibly put him out of the race or out of life when I can adjust my line by six inches and still keep him from getting by.

Good you brought the "targeting" thing up
That’s total BS put out by the NHL. You can’t target someone every time and exactly where you want. Hell you’re just dayum glad to get a piece of the guy with all the speed and twisting and turning. The claim someone planned to put their right shoulder on some guy’s left temple is balderdash. It’s like 2 fighters pilots, jinking, bleeding off speed and turning. When you’ve got a bead on a guy you’re constantly recalculating as you get closer, sometimes the hit’s not even there and you peel away.
And yes I know you can skate across the rink and target someone and bean them with an elbow, that’s completely different. I’m talking about all these crap Shanaban calls where a dman comes across the blue line and goinks someone.
There’s going to be a whole section in the rule book for the hand wringers to write about open ice hits now. North/South, intent, head area, targeting, fuck, I’m getting dizzy just thinking about all that BS. Right now this league is a joke, after a hit it’s not “Wow, what a hit” it’s "2 games or 3?’ “Shanaban right?”
Just a chew toy for the hockey gods
Seems to me the "bad" play is
skating in the middle of the fucking ice with your head down.

lol normally ian cole is a healthy scratch. granted we need him a bit
i wonder if a game or two is cos “well he wouldnt be playing anyway if the blues get a d back”
baseball does that crap with pitcher suspensions compared to hitters.
