Winging it in Motown, our really ugly sister site on SBNation, after being completely uneducated trolls and dicks for the past week or so because they’re 45-pound vaginas, led their postgame post with this: "Monday night was an absolute playoff mentality game as much as November 26th against Boston or January 8th against Chicago."
Let that digest for a sec. Know what that tells me? As much as they like to make har har Blues fans jokes and think about how David Backes sucks (by the way, if he ever finds this out, he may destroy you, Death Star-style), the Wings fans accidentally just exposed their soft underbelly. Guess what, Detroit cocksuckers – you just said this was a playoff-mentality game. And you just compared us to Boston and Chicago (who, might I note, have won the last two Stanley Cups).

And it is this mentality that makes the majority of us call you (and Blackhawks/SCH) “Little Brother” instead of seeing you as actual opponents. You’re a pest that annoys, but not really anything to worry about.

Classic
Your entire existence is devoted not to beating the Wings, but just getting on some sort of equal footing. And it just won’t happen. Your team is dumb and can’t score. Your coach is good for about 2 months before his players start to bail. Your goalie(s) are overrated and you can’t hold any sort of candle to the two teams you hate the most: Detroit and Chicago.
Playoff mentality is probably different than playoff-like importance. To us, it’s January. Every January’s the same, filled with mundane games and peppered with just a few games that entertain us. Playoffs are locked. Health is all that matters. Refining, polishing. You guys are fighting for your playoff lives. Yes, even this year. You’ll lose to the Pens tonight because they are considerably better than the Blues, just like the Wings are.
What kind of strategy was that last night? Any idea? How’d it work out? Classic Blues hockey. Dumb. Irresponsible. Reactionary and completely predictable. Babcock owns you just like Bowman did.
So go at WIIM for the way they recapped the game. That’s all you have. You know it and so do we. Good luck getting in, because the team that got wiped out last night by the Wings proved to be inferior in literally every facet of the game.
Rivalry? Shit no. Not even close. Playoffs in January for the Blues, as usual.

Actually
Over the last three years, we are 8-7-2 against you guys, so ya, I would say we can beat the Wings. We must’ve been able to score enough to beat you those 8 times.

Honest question, not trying to put the Blues down here – anyone know offhand what the mid-to-late March and early April record is in that stretch? I’m curious how much we shut ourselves down once we have things pretty well locked in place.

From March 09-April 2011, Detroit is 4-2.
This is counting all of March.
Dancing Datsyuk Decidedly Dazzles Dainty Defensemen

Looks like it is more a case of us shutting our own selves down

It's all they have
and you’re right, it’s hilarious. They get pasted and their local hero, Gallagher? The best he can come up with is that WIIM used the word “playoffs” in their post. Such an odd combination, though…“St. Louis” and “playoffs”. So rare.
And still so unlikely.

They beat us 3 times in a month, all in their own house. Not surprising, and also not a reason to doubt the quality of this Blues team. I seem to recall beating them twice in our house earlier this year.
We won’t see them again til the first week of April. The playoff situation should be sorted out by then.

playoff mentality
I think by playoff mentality they’re talking about situations like Stewart going after Stuart and Colaiacovo roughing up Helm when they weren’t necessary and helped them lose a game they had a shot at winning. The Blues are learning a lot from these games.
Congrats on the Blues for being taken seriously by the Red Wings

So let me get this straight
After whining and complaining for a long time that Wing fans don’t give the Blues any respect, we finally admit that the games mean something and that the Blues have risen up to become considered a legitimate threat to the Wings, only to have to Blues fans whine and complain.
You guys are simply adorable.

Little bit of knowledge some here may already know...
but we STILL haven’t had a game this year where the total salaries on the ice have reached the league minimum. We are 2-3 against the Wings with every game being won at home, 1-1 against the Hawks, and have a 14,15,16 game, whatever it is now, home point streak going. I’m very satisfied with this team, and we aren’t even playing our best hockey and haven’t had a semi complete squad fielded yet this year.
I’m excited for the post All Star break action. We will just be hitting our stride come playoff time. It will be so nice to get that first playoff victory and series win so that we can get these guys off our back. But then it won’t end until the Blues can beat the Wings in a series. But THAT won’t end until the Blues win the Cup. But EVEN THAT won’t end until we have as many as they do. It will be nice to take the first step toward evening things up in April of this year.

this thread reminds me of how the team reacted last night when things didn’t go their way. take shots. it’s not going to matter in April/May. Having healthy players won’t matter if they make poor decisions under pressure.

well said
It’s about control and they (Blues) just didn’t have it when they needed it last night. The Wings saw the threat, took it seriously, potted a couple, and just skated to protect themselves in the grand scheme of things. This is a marathon and you can’t go out and skate like a wrecking ball and expect to last 82 games into the playoffs. Time will tell if your coach and take some of that out of the team.

wings fans, announcers and other etcetera said the previous STL-DET was a “playoff atmosphere” game. what’s the big what-to-do?
the wings-blues games have all been great. way better hockey than we’ve seen from Chicago. it’s unfortunate we can’t have a hockey discussion without idiots calling each other names.
even though I love my wings I still proudly display my Doug Gilmour jersey i got for Christmas in 86. His style of 2 way play and smart hockey is what Hitchcock needs to get in his teams head. that will only come with more games like last night. instead of being offended and lashing out i’d look at it like a step up the team is capable of making. their best players need to act like the best players, and that’s what the game came down to. I agree with you that if you have never lived in the region,
or have a family member who’s a fan or have any ties to the team, then ya, if you live very far away and are a Wings fan, it is most likely for band wagon reasons. But when does the band wagon stop if you like a team?
What I’m getting at is, if you started liking a team when you were 10 because they were good, and you still are at 30 is that still considered band wagon?
My dad is a Cowboys fan. He is 60 and has been since he was little. That could be considered band wagon. The reason he is a Boys fan is because that is who was on tv when he was little. The Red Wings are who is on tv now for hockey most of the time. I don’t have the answers, just bringing up a discussion point.

I deffinately
do not fall into the Bandwagon considering your pre req’s! Always have been a fan of hockey and always will be! I’ve learned the history as well as watched alot of it. One of the best moments in my life ( behind getting married and creating an beautiful baby!) was getting to meet one of my hockey hero’s Ted Lindsay!!
I loved growing up a Blues fan.
I was just starting to get my fandom going (5-7 yo) when Hull came on the scene. One of my favorite players back then was Vincent Reindeau, (then Cujo). I would make goalie sticks out of tape and whatever I could find around the house. I had a mini hockey net downstairs I would bring out and would set those old Kool Aid Koolers or whatever they were on top of the net just like the goalies did. My mom would shoot pucks at me. God I loved it!
And speaking of Cujo, we were at the Galleria in STL and I saw him and told my mom who he was. She didn’t believe me at first, but went up and asked him if he was. He said ya and didn’t have many people recognize him without his mask on. He and his family walked and talked with us for about the next half hour while my mom and his wife shopped together. That was about as cool as it got for a kid.

I think
we can all agree that as far as Pro Athletes go.. Hockey players are the best!!! Sat down with Lindsay for about an hour and he was more interested in finding out how I got into hockey then talking about himself!
It was
kind of funny talking to Ted. He actually didnt want to go pro because he figured he would get less playing time. Hows that for a guy who loves the game.
theres just certain things

Also, my best friends growing up (and current roommate) was/is a Wings fan.
He would wear his Fedorov jersey and I would wear my Hull and we would have some intense 1v1 street hockey battles. When it came time to drop the mitts we would take it into the yard so we didn’t get scraped up on the street. Bad asses, I know.

Most teams have bandwagoners and I for one wont dispute the fact that the Wings have some of these. All teams need to have “part time” fans as well as full time fans! It all helps financially. Guess My biggest problem is when people generalize that all WIngs fans must be from Detroit and must be Welfare maggets that jumped on the Bandwagon. Ive been a long time fan of the Wings and am in no way shape or form accepting free hand outs! To generalize is to be ignorant!

Well, you see it is quite simple:
1. This wasn’t an argument or a debate it was a rant with intent to evoke a response.
2. Of all of the the things that I ranted about that you could’ve responded to, you responded to my attack of the city itself but yet chose to chastise me for getting off the topic of hockey.
3. You didn’t defend the city in your argument you only responded by saying St Louis was worse.
4. I did not get off the topic of the sport as I offeres only my thoughts on the city and its fans. I made reference to the team’s past play so as to highlight your current bandwagon years.
5. You chose to insult me personally which, of course, would end most arguments but as I’ve said this isn’t an argument and I only sought to evoke a response; which I did.
I appreciate that there were a few grammatical errors on my part but regardless, I win.

"as soon as there is a downturn"
“there will be a downturn in the salary cap era”
Red Wing fans have been hearing this since before the salary cap even went into effect. That damn salary cap has kept the Wings from signing the greatest players in the world – so we’re stuck with Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Lidstrom, Howard, etc etc. Oh, wait.
Tell me, what have the Wings done since the salary cap era began? Because if you call a Stanley Cup, two trips to the Finals, and a trip to the WCF a “downturn” then I think that word doesn’t mean what you think it means.

by TheFlyingCavallinis on Jan 24, 2012 2:43 PM CST up reply actions
Sure I do
The point is, linking the salary cap to a downturn is stupid. All teams play under the same cap. The Wings have proven in the years since that they can handle things in a salary cap world, so why would that change?
by PaulinMiamiBeach on Jan 24, 2012 2:44 PM CST up reply actions
I think all he was saying is that eventually the Wings will hit a bump in the road.
They have done a great job so far, but it won’t always be roses for you guys. Hell, if the Blues didn’t get raped by their previous owner right after one of the best periods in Blues history, we wouldn’t have had such a shitty six year stretch either. I am glad we went through it though, because now we are stocked and prepared to compete with the big boys for the foreseeable future. And just watch out when the ownership gets settled and we (hopefully) spend close to the cap.

Okay, this is kinda pathetic on both parties. Yes, the Red Wings beat the Blues yesterday. The Red Wings are a fantastic home team. So are the Blues. In their games against each other, the home team has won every game. The Red Wings have just played one more home game.
Everyone settle down. The season is still young. There will be plenty of time for us to bicker like kids later.

Well we could look at recent history...
the last game between the clubs last year was a 10-3 drubbing by the Blues… so it’s possible.

If I had to guess now, I think we are still in the hunt for top spot in the division and will go balls out in this game. I think we win this one by 1 or 2 on home ice.
by TheFlyingCavallinis on Jan 24, 2012 1:01 PM CST up reply actions
I'm not going to eliminate that from the realm of possibilities
I think we’ve seen the difference between how seriously the Wings take non-playoff teams versus playoff teams by now though.
Then again… they did lose 7-1 against Washington this year.
Personally, I don’t think the Blues will be able to pull it off, but I recognize that it’s certainly possible.
by J.J. from Kansas on Jan 24, 2012 1:02 PM CST up reply actions
No, probably not.
Though in reality it doesn’t matter. Just like it doesn’t matter that I’m sure the Blues had a better goal differential than the Red Wings in their head to head games last year (winning a game by 7 tends to do that).
How a game is played is more or less unimportant, as long as you you get the 2 points, preferably in regulation. Doesn’t matter if it’s a shutout, a 9-8 game, you out shoot your opponent by 30, or they outshoot you by 30, 2 points is 2 points, and come playoff time, a W is most certainly a W.

by Novacain on Jan 24, 2012 1:08 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
I can dispute the concept that how you win doesn’t matter just as easily.
Better teams tend to have better goal differentials. Stats come into play when you’re trying to debate which team is better, especially when it comes down to tying in the season series. Remember, this is hockey, we don’t do ties anymore.
by J.J. from Kansas on Jan 24, 2012 1:12 PM CST up reply actions
Debating who'se better doesn't make you better.
You beat us yesterday, that’s true. Nothing can dispute that. But the idea that if we win the next game by less than 4, and our season point total against each other is equal, we would still be worse than you simply because your goal differential is better? Yeah, that’s bull.
I’m willing to admit most Blues fans have an inferiority complex, but man, from reading this thread, it’s only matched by the superiority complex Red Wings fans seem to have. And I’m a Cubs fan that lives in St.Louis, so I know a superiority complex when I see one.

by J.J. from Kansas on Jan 24, 2012 1:36 PM CST up reply actions
I would say if we beat you on the 4th we were equally matched in the regular season
However, going into the playoffs you guys would be the favorites, even if we have home ice advantage, because you have walked the walk recently. The Blues will not be favored until we can beat you once or twice.
by TheFlyingCavallinis on Jan 24, 2012 1:39 PM CST up reply actions
If we beat you on April 4th...
Then it would just confirm that the Blues and Red Wings are two great home teams, and neither one could figure out how to stop the other in their building.
I said it in the pregame thread yesterday: I’ve already accepted the Blues won’t be respected as a top end Stanley Cup contender until we take out Detroit, Chicago, or Vancouver in the playoffs. Even if we win the Presidents Trophey, I don’t think that changes.

record against central division, common opponents, or overall standings would be a better way to decide who was better if you HAD to do that.
by TheFlyingCavallinis on Jan 24, 2012 1:56 PM CST up reply actions
Only way to determine who'se better is on ice.
Not in a stat column.
Yesterday the Wings were better. Saying otherwise is silly. Now, if it was in a shootout win or something, that’s up for debate, because quite simply shootouts are awful. But it wasn’t. How many times in sports have we seen a team dominate a regular season series against a team, and than get swept out by them come playoff time.

Other than that? Not much, no. It would be nice to be good against good teams since it would mean we have experience against them. Of course, the Blues problems in recent history hasn’t been beating the good teams, it was that we lost to the bad ones. But once it comes to playoff time (which is the only team either of our fanbases should care about), any and all regular season statistics mean absolutely nothing.

And you just compared us to Boston and Chicago (who, might I note, have won the last two Stanley Cups).

while it may be said by some
that st louis is a better team than the wings or even any other team currently contending in the western conference. I say they’re good but not great. here’s why…since this entire blog is relatively fresh with emotions from last night’s game, break it down strictly by the numbers. honestly the numbers aren’t close. since team comparisons are all the rage for the moment, consider this. compare each forward line, each defensive line, special teams, and goaltending. break it all down by the numbers. going forward you can see exactly how the teams actually line up across the board. if you plot the stats out correctly, you should be able to see what style of play the teams use.
"If we knew what the outcome would be it wouldn't be called hindsight."
I will acknowledge that you guys have better stats for the most part.
But where it counts, in points, where you really kick the shit out of us and why you are ahead right now is in the OT and shootout periods. You are 8-1 and we are 3-6. That is quite a discrepancy. Yet truth be told, you guys are still just three points ahead while we have a game in hand. This will be quite a stretch of 30+ games coming up in the next couple months.

But remember, we are still an EXTREMELY young team. Give us a year or two of being at or near the top for these guys to get that killer instinct and to learn what it means to play with the big boys.
As Dr. Leo Marvin would say… we are taking baby steps. Baby steps to the top of the conference, baby steps to the playoffs, baby steps to a playoff series win…

as for points
while det is listed as 33-15-1, keep in mind, your team has gotten 6 FREE points for doing nothing other then forcing OT and losing either there or the shootout.
I personally think the nhl HAS to go back to scoring it like it used to be. no points should ever be awarded for a contest that hasn’t been decided. forcing teams to actually TRY in the OT because the winner gets 2 pts and the loser gets jack shit. if after overtime the game still isn’t decided, the game goes to a shootout. NOW there’s only 1 point available to either team. see where the incentive comes into play? my theory is make less points available not more. more points is like fucking welfare and no one will want to work to earn it. look at it this way…if the game starts tied (0-0) and finishes the 3rd period tied, if nobody received points at the start of the game, why should they now?
"If we knew what the outcome would be it wouldn't be called hindsight."
I don't agree with that.
I do agree two points per game max. But games should be able to end in ties. I don’t get the fascination with games HAVING to end with a winner and loser. If two teams are equal on a night, let the score reflect that. You get winners and losers at the end of seasons.

I went to a game when the Wings played trap-happy Minnesota to a tie
It was an awful game. The score finished 2-2. No sustained pressure, the goals came from thin air and were on the softer side. I figure if you like ties, watch soccer. No shortage of ties there.
Fan of the Detroit Tigers, Lions and Red Wings.
one last thing...
looked up the scoring from the 2 away games at blues home ice. 2 one goal games. really? if st louis wants to advance deep into the playoffs (costs nothing to dream), they had better get some scoring help. those guys on the ir won’t make much of a difference when they’re back because they can’t stay healthy. same goes for the nhl’s list of players out due to concussion issues or long term injury reserve. blues shouldn’t feel bad about stewart getting jacked like he did though…blackhawks have their own “pita” in daniel “carbomb” carcillo. i mean, someone had to employ these two players and why not two of detroit’s division rivals? makes for easy powerplays when the wings play these teams. ;)
if the st louis blues want to be taken seriously by the rest of the league. win something. division crown, president’s trophy, stanley cup….something…anything…here’s why….teams will take you seriously if you have some banners hanging from your rafters which show you are a force to be reckoned with. really big jerseys hanging in the rafters really don’t impress anyone unless they’re hanging near the banners that those jerseys won.
"If we knew what the outcome would be it wouldn't be called hindsight."
I don't really know what you are saying in that first paragraph.
You are comparing Chris Stewart to Carcillo? Really? As I said over in your blog earlier, aside from that boarding call on Stew and then last night sticking up for his teammate who he thought got rocked in the head, he hasn’t had any disciplinary problems as far as I remember. Carcillo on the other hand…
And I agree we need to win. But even when they won the President’s trophy it didn’t seem like anyone took us seriously then either. However, we did end up losing in the first round…

not about infractions
it’s about attitude and controlling emotions. neither can seem to quite master that
"If we knew what the outcome would be it wouldn't be called hindsight."
But again,
Other than twice only against you guys, he is fine. I think last night he wanted to stand up for his boy when he thought it was a cheap hit that went unpunished. Should’ve at least done it later in the shift though after maybe touching the puck so as to not get the instigator and misconduct.

Well Detroit fans...
You just got even more good news. Prince Fielder just signed with the Tigers.

At 9/215
I don’t know if it’s good news or not, but their lineup will be scary as long as Prince can still make it to first.

Ya, I'm not a fan of a contract that long
but I would’ve done it with Prince before Albert. But both of them are easier to swallow with American League teams than they would’ve been with NL teams.

Ehhh
I probably would lean Albert. Cecil’s career was basically over by age 32. Not saying his career will only last four more years but….he’s a big boy. I’d take my chances on Albert’s health.

But Al's elbow is hanging on by a thread.
And he has let himself go the past few seasons too. Only time will tell.
I’ll take Berkman over them both :)

This would be the picture form of the numeric form I used earlier.
And it applies in just about every argument I ever fucking see around here, actually.
Fight Club writer for the print edition of St. Louis Game Time . . . I need another beer.
The Throwdown Lowdown Report, only on The Bluenote Zone.
And I can also write things in 140 characters or fewer.
Dang, man.
Just logged in for the first time in a couple of days and this shit’s going down. Ha! One thing you can always count on: Wings fans take themselves waaaayyy too fucking serious. It seems they’re just like their team; a bunch of vags.

This is clearly fan on fan hate and the only way to settle this is for everyone to meet in a field, to drink insane amounts of alcohol and to settle this in a bloody bare knuckles brawl.
Haha
That would be awesome if this actually came to pass. Sort of like the first fight in Gangs of New York. I call the Dead Rabbits!!
